Re: Chrysler looking to eliminate the Dodge Viper

    racerx:

Chrysler/Dodge make a very impressive line-up, much more so than I had thought, I just took a look. A herculean effort such a small company. Tens of thousands individual parts to design and build. 27 different model lines. Perhaps a streamlining would help the bottom line.

    Their pick-up truck alone is extremely impressive inside and out. That is a great interior;

Re: Chrysler looking to eliminate the Dodge Viper

Not at all. Have you ever driven a recently produced full size american pick-up? Say a Ford F150, a chevy Silverado, or one of these Dodge Rams?

I rented one a couple years ago to drive 500 miles (each way) to buy a spare 928 engine. The ride was incredibly smooth and comfortable. The power was amazing with wheels wanting to break free and of course the payload capability more than adequate. It was a blast.

American full size pick-ups may not be the european thing, but they are extremely well built and functional.

The one pictured above has a more attractive interior than a cayenne or panamera to my eyes. They may not be the choice at a track or the most fun at a gas/petrol station but for hauling cargo, inclement weather, or tough roads they can't be beat.

Re: Chrysler looking to eliminate the Dodge Viper

Point out my errors please. I just went to the truly european car makers that came to mind to find competing products. Maybe they are hiding something but the best I can come up with are in pictures below.

Just like most of the cars I saw briefly on those sites these "trucks" look like tinny, un-finished lightweights. Very unappealing.SmileySmiley

It is so unfortunate that this irresponsible wall street and Washington phuck-up has to be paid for by companies like Chrysler that actually make good products.

Yup, lets blame Wall Street for years of mismanagement, fat UAW contracts, bad build quality (though better in most recent years but the brand perception is still there), production of products no one wants to buy (sebring, pacifica come to mind).

The immediate cause of the bankruptcies is the lack of credit to decent borrowers caused by the meltdown on wall street after lehman collapsed.

The next cause is the bursting of the RE bubble caused by Greenspans free money, Freddy and Fannies securitization scheme going back to the 1999 letter, and exascerbated by Franks refusal to oversee and intervene while there was still time.

The next cause is the lack of an energy policy in this country since the first oil shock in 1973 - biggest problem we face.

All you have to do is watch CNBC's "House of cards" to see why this recent boom had to go bust.

Wall Street is to blame for ruining this country not just the auto companies. ask for reference material if you need it.

But lest look at your claims as to the auto industry - firstly all the foreign competitors are hurting also with huge losses. Germany is keeping their industry going with Merkels program called cash for clunkers.

Bad mangement - in chryslers case - I fail to see that, but they are wall streeters themselves - Cerberus capital mangement. They have the best line-up in the industry imo with a constant flow of new models- Chrysler 300, dodge charger, Challenger, and the Jeep line with many new products including the best looking SUV imo the 4 door wrangler.

Those contracts while wasteful with job banks and quotas did pay a decent american wage with benefits most americans expect.

American quality is at the top of JD power rankings. That is an old myth.

And as to value, How much do you have to pay a european car company for 425 HP/ 410 TQ?Smiley

The fact that sales went from 16 million to 8 million had everything to do with Washington/Wall Street and nothing to do with detroit.

Had Detroit got the bailout that AIG or BofA or Citi got they could survive with bonuses in  tact. The banks should have been dismantled not detroit.

Yup, wall street and bankers told the world to stop buying American Cars.  Wall Street negotiated the higher costs of production as well.

I did not say the credit crisis did not hurt the Detroit, it killed them, but the American Auto Industry was in no way healthy before that, the credit crisis was just the final straw, not the cause.

Some interesting facts including a 40% decline in german car exports, I guess wall street told everyone to stop buying foreign cars too.

I mentioned it before, $4.00 + gas killed american type vehicles. In a $1/gal gas world US automakers would rule, but those days are long gone.

In a union-less, pension-less world, US automakers would rule.

In spite of the handicaps, it's amazing that the US still produces some very fine pick-up trucks. Smiley

I have never driven one of the.. but been in an older.. GMC I think... And it was not a memorable drive at all... First the car was SOOOO BIG!!! I could never understand who needs a car that is that big anyway?!? And just three seats!!! Second I remember, and here I was asking you if you are kidding, that the build quality was a strange world to that truck!! I mean there where gaps in the interior of the car that you could pull out the cables from the dashboard. And about the design... well.. nothing to comment.. the most boring design I have ever seen...

The Dodge is looking better but as a match for a Cayenne or Panamera in looks or interior...... well... I think you are still kidding...Smiley
