    Re: Blown Engine

The new engine also came with old RMS design, having this replaced with new RMS while the engine is available. (see next picture)

    Re: Blown Engine

After 2 1/2 weeks, I finally got my car back today.  At times it felt like a lifetime not knowing whether the replacement would be covered or not, but I have to admit, Porsche handled this situation outstanding and its the only time an extended warranty, that I bought, actually paid for itself several times over.  Total bill $13K, my out of pocket expense....$100   Not bad for a new rebuilt engine.  Me and my baby plan on going for an extended drive this weekend.....

Many thanks for the fascinating photographs and pleased that you've got your car back as good, or better, than new.

    Re: Blown Engine

Thanks for a great write up and photos.

    I have my own problem.

Filled my car up at a rather dodgy looking petrol station and all seemed fine until about 50  miles or so in. Then briefly the engine check warning light came on (flashed at low revs then disappeared).

Later the engine check light stayed on (now regularly flashing/beeping at low revs).

Now the engine sounds very rough at low revs ( <1.3k or so) but seems fine above - pulls OK etc, although I am driving it very delicately indeed (and hardly any distance. At low revs it has a tendency to stall but fires up happily.

Do you think this is the dreaded IMS or just water and/or other muck in the fuel? No extended warrantly so praying it's the latter!

Thanks for any advice in advance... SoS.

    Re: Blown Engine

Oh yes. I live in NW london (NW3) and booked it in with Porsche Centre W London. Is that the best place for this kind of thing?  I heard the guys in St Albans / Hatfield were OK too?

    Thanks in advance,

    SoS.

    Re: Blown Engine

what grade fuel did you put in ??

Cheapest of the cheap (was in a hurry) which was probably a mistake.

A mate of mine who does a lot of car stuff suspects the O2 sensor has died; rough idling apparently is a notorious symptom of that issue. X fingers anyway...

Strange - your engine should run just fine on normal unleaded petrol - just a thought - get Trading Standards to do a spot check on the fuel at the garage where you filled up, then if your engine has suffered damage as a result of sub-standard fuel you'll have a chance of litigation. Keep your receipt for the fuel, of course.

Even if you had the extended warranty I doubt that damage caused by poor fuel would be covered.

Good luck - here's hoping nothing serious.

    Re: Blown Engine

Sorry to hear this SoS... it could also just be bad luck. A while back, Tesco had a sub-standard batch of fuel that caused some engines some problems. It can happen and, as DC said, your first recourse for reimbursement of repair costs should be to the petrol station. I presume they are insured to cover such liabilities.

    Re: Blown Engine

I'd be tempted to go for o² Sensor or Coilpacks at this stage as I understand bad fuel can sometimes do this.  Hope it's nothing serious, fingers crossed for ya.

    Re: Blown Engine

i would say 02 sensors as well. do you stil have leaded fuel in the uk ?? kills the sensors and makes engine check light come on.

    Re: Blown Engine

Great photos. Am I the only one that likes looking at photos of the engineering bits you don't usually see even more than pics of nicely detailed cars? Post more if you've got them!

I'm assuming that the shiny bits with the rough looking welds on the side of the refurb engine are for handling use only? And what is the difference between the new and old RMS design? Is it visible?

I don't think anyone else replied, but I think this was just 'one of those things'. I don't think it should narrow your search. I'd probably go for something in the middle of the 997.1 production run, not too early so that any production niggles haven't been ironed out, and not too late that it's not good value for money.

Personally, I'd also go for something that looks like it's been used regularly but not abused. Sometimes cars that are just stuck in garages and never driven can have components go through lack of regular use.

When I was waiting for my car to be serviced there was another customer waiting on a diagnosis on a 997 cab he'd recently bought whose previous owner had only done 1500 miles a year. The car had problems starting. Turns out the started motor needed replacing.
