    997 Engine Failure

I write on behalf of my boss who has instructed me to spend a day a week researching this subject. I would like to hear from anyone who has suffered a similar problem. Legally he accepts he has no leg to stand on, but morally he is furious at how dismissive Porsche have been on what is increasingly appearing to be a fault with the engine of the 997 and wishes to build a case for professional presentation in the media based on the facts collected from this exercise. Had it not been for my initial research on the Web then he was pretty much accepting that he was an "unlucky one off" but my initial research has unearthed numerous identical cases accross the world. He is not internet "savvy" and is convinced there are many more 997 owners out there who are not "internet savvy" and will be unaware thier case is is not isolatated. As such, he has agreed a budget for me to place notices mainly in national journals and "High Net Worth" publications for owners past and present who have suffered similar problems to come forward.

    The problem:

He purchased a Porsche 997 as they came out in 2004. It has been serviced exclusively by Porsche. He does very little mileage and as a result did not extend the warranty. It was last serviced in October 2008 when the mileage was aproximately 19,000 miles. A full service was carried out including full oil change. 1,000 miles later, during a drive the management system requested a visit to the workshop.

Porsche have diagnosed a fault with the sixth cylinder compression. The net result is a new engine. Like many other owners whom I have liased with the left hand exhaust is very black apparently from excessive oil being passed through a "score" in the sixth cylinder.

There seems to be huge inconsistencies as to how Porsche deal with thier customers depending upon where the car was bought and how it was serviced but the under lying fault appears entirely consistent.

It is the facts I wish to concentrate on and would be very grateful to hear from anybody who has had a similar, or most likely EXACT problem with the engine of thier 997 ONLY.

Should you wish to remain anonoymous then that is understood but the intention is to build a fully researched and accurate case and therefore your full support would be gratefully recieved.

Like so many Porsche owners his loyalty and commitment to the Porsche brand has been total and it is only the dismissive and unsupportive response from Porsche when a clear fault on thier part is materialising that has shattered this commitment and led to this project.

    Thank you for your time.
P.S I am based in the United Kingdom so the notices posted will be within Europe and mainly the UK but I am keen to build up a picture of defective engines, hence this thread, so please reply.

    Re: 997 Engine Failure

Your boss, as a PAG customer who serviced his car regularly at the dealer, should argue w/ the dealer and the factory rep about this issue. The factory is known to take care of their customers. It is unproductive to come to public forums to discuss this and threaten legal action, before other means ran their course.

I have didnt hear about similar cases

    Re: 997 Engine Failure

From what I understand from people I know Porsche are often generous with severe faults even after the 2 year warranty expires, provided that all maintenance was followed in detail and there was no abuse of the car.

    Re: 997 Engine Failure

There seem to be some minor issues with the facelift 997 DI engines(new engine = trouble possible) but as far as know, the first gen 997 engines are bulletproof.

I owned a 997 Carrera S for more than a year, had 16000 km, drove it very hard, no engine problems whatsoever. This car was one of the first cars delivered in Germany.

The car needs to be serviced at AUTHORIZED dealers ONLY, this is very very important.

If so, talk to your local dealer first where the car was serviced for the past few months. If this isn't an authorized dealer, your cards aren't too good I'm afraid.

Porsche usually takes care of their customers, even after the warranty expires. On the other hand, you can't ask them to pay for an engine repair for a car which is almost 5 years old. This is why there are USED car warranties which can be purchased after the original warranty expires. Unfortunately many Porsche customers don't seem to understand that repairs can be VERY expensive after the warranty expires.

Porsche Germany offers the possibility to purchase an extra warranty after the original two years of warranty expires. You can re-purchase this extended warranty each year and it is highly recommended.

Example: the engine of a 997 Turbo costs around 40000 EUR if it needs replacement.

As far as I know, a 997 first gen engine was around 16000 EUR last time I checked but it may have changed now. Just an example.

Sorry to hear about the trouble but honestly, the 997 engine isn't one of the engines who have bad reputation, on the contrary. Same goes for the 997 Turbo engine, almost bulletproof too.

Could you elaborate on that? Thanks!

    Re: 997 Engine Failure

Also, I have heard of LOTS of 997.1 Carrera engines having to be replaced because of RMS failure, amongst other reasons.

Conversely, I haven't heard of one single 997.1 Turbo engine needing to be replaced.

Perhaps I am hanging out at the wrong forums if that's not an accurate representation...

Lastly here in the UK, the new Porsche GB extended warranty package that they have put together is an over-priced nightmare of a contract!  You can't even have non-Porsche window washers, or even an iPod adaptor, you have to strip out EVERYTHING custom no matter how minor in order to be able to take out the policy.  So despite the 40k EUR worse case scenario I won't be taking out an extended warranty.

Well there are a few 997.2 Carreras over here in the UK that have shown to have a 'flat-spot' in their acceleration in second gear at +/- 2,700 rpm .  Their OPC thinks it might be applicable to ALL 997.2 Carreras and a remap supplied by the factory may be required to fix.  They are still looking into this.

    Re: 997 Engine Failure

I have owned Porsches for the past 30 years including my current '05 997S.  I've never experienced anything that resembles the problem you describe.  All of my P-cars have had higher mileages than 19,000 miles.  One of them had in excess of 100,000.

Neither have I known or heard of anyone suffering this fault.

Still, as they say, shit can happen and, again in my experience, Porsche are usually helpful in these situations.....SO LONG AS......THE CAR HAS BEEN REGULARLY SERVICED AT AN OPC.

I think your boss has been somewhat foolish in not taking the extended warranties.

As it is, if he uses an OPC - he should be spending your time, or his own, in discussions with them.  That would be the most productive route to take...IMHO..

    Re: 997 Engine Failure

FYI - Porsche Club GB forum has been running a 'warranty' thread for a few months where people list out all the things that have broken on their 997.  If you are a member (members only section) then you can see:

    http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=396928

I'd say most 997.1 Carreras have had their fair share of troubles.  Some of the earlier cars seem to be completely disintegrating after about 4 years.  Those that have had replacement engines had trouble anywhere from 1.5k to 18k miles.

Alex...there's a big difference between a fair share of troubles and "completely disintergrating?"  that's a bit steep isn't it?

I'd say it's the sort of rubbish conducive with the way in which PCGB operate.  I was a member for a year and they couldn't even manage to answer an email that I sent three times...SmileySmiley

    Re: 997 Engine Failure

Yes, that seems to be the range: fair share >> disintegrating!

One of the PCGB guys is not a happy guy right now due to all the 'wear and tear' items breaking on his car after 4 years of ownership.  It's costing him a fortune to keep the car, and in it's current state is apparently undrivable with blown shocks.

One of the UK guys here on the Porsche Club forum gave these example of costs for Porsche to exchange engines (which is less than cost of a total new engine, no exchange):

    • 997 GT3 engine is around £13.5k +Vat
    • 997 Carrera S is around £5,800+Vat

Does anyone know what the exchange price on a 997 Turbo engine would be roughly?  I would expect close to the GT3 engine price no?

This is important information when someone is calculating risk vs cost of taking out extended warranties.
