    Re: Panamera Design Comparison

    Misha011,

It is all about personally liking or disliking, although I think great design is generally broadly recognized.

I don't think we would be having this debate over a 911, a 430 or any Aston Martin.

No doubt the Panamera looks better at some angles and in some colors than others and as Chris Bangle himself pointed out, some cars just don't photograph well  - his observation for his own car designs - but to my personal eye, the Panamera does not look very integrated. It looks to me like they stretched a 911 but ran out of ideas for the middle.

Hopefully it will look better in actuality. I can't wait to see it up close. I missed my chance in Geneva.

    Ed_moree,

Thank you for the very insightful analysis. Are you a product designer yourself?

Most interesting is that the design of the Pamamera was so strongly influenced by their CEO.

Of course product design is about appealing to customers and measured in sales, and I only count for one (or not).

Regarding the respect that Chris Bangle is accorded by other automotive designers, certainly some of the quotes on the Wikipedia entry from major automotive heads of design are less than complimentary, but maybe they were taken out of context.

Certainly a design can grow on one, but I woiuld submit that the very best design elicits an immediate, emotional, visceral response - a passion to possess. Same with a beautiful woman!

About my job .... Smiley can´t say too much...sorry..... About the heads of design from other companies I just have to tell you that there is a lot of envy.... Bangle opened ways in car design that before him many where afraid to even consider...

And I agree that it is very important to get emotionally involved with the looks of an object and especially cars. But as you say about a beautiful woman... there is something interesting that many times you get that feeling of wanting to posses and in the moment the act has ended is a bit like... well actually it wasn´t that good.... ; and a different situation you start with a woman that at the beginning it wasn´t that desireble and not too much passion involved... but somehow why is growing by the time passes... and latter you can´t live without it.....

And this is because passion is a feeling so strong and so powerful that in can´t last too long. We can be mentaly afected if the passion does not give place to other feelings. So is with cars. Me for example, I like Ferraris very much, but after a while is like I have seen everything... there is no descovering anymore of new lines, views... detalis... no surprise anymore... and is like the car I know from tousands of years.... It happened with the 355 and 360. I liked them very much from the beginning, but after two years of seeing them... its like.... boring.... Sorry I know that in a world like ours to say that a Ferrari is boring is not very usual... but I can assure you that I´m not the only one.... While the Enzo for example I never liked it at the beginning... and the other day I´ve seen one.. and it was like a revelation... So I think there can be both instant good looking but also growing on time.... But for both of them it has to be a good design, and that is more than just lines, surfaces and volumes....

I'd like to hear what is wrong with this design - apart from personal disliking .

    Misha,

What is "wrong" with this design, is that for me, having seen the car on pictures only, this seems to be the only angle from which the design looks totally good. From every other angle, there seem to be odd shapes and blobs.

However, that might change when seeing the car in real life...

    Ed_Moree,

I think I am quite fortunate to have a monogamous gene and as with women, cars: I am on my second silver 911 and there has not been a day over the past four and a half years that I have not opened my garage door in the morning and fallen in love again, not that I don't admire other beautiful cars all the time from a distance. But I am happy with the one I have: its design and its performance, both. So with women, only except that I have been happily married to the same person for 25 years while also admiring other beatuiful women from a distance!

It's all a matter of taste and preconception.IMO nothing in design is generally loved or even generally recognised.

For example fans of a given brand brand very often love all the cars from their favourite brand. I know friends who are BMW fans who admire the 6 series whereas to me it is an unacceptable design.Same with many recent Mercedes. On the opposite, there are "haters" who cannot say anything positive about a design from the brand they hate (too many Porsche haters BTW).

Personally, I cannot stand the Ferrari mid-engined cars after the 355 whereas to most enthusiasts they appear as works of art. But I love the 599 and I also find the 612 attractive.

The Astons I find boring and lacking dynamism and talking about stretched sports cars, people who knock the Panamera as a stretched 911, still admire the Rapide which to my eyes is the epitome of an elongated two door car.

Why people say that any Ferrari or  Aston or even fussy Lamborghinis are beautiful? Because they are rare sights and a very expensive cars and people feel that they have to admire them. It's like when you see a film star and even if you feel she is awful you cannot say it very openly, in case your taste is questioned and you are laughed at by the majority. Similarly, if an artist has a "name" his works are admired no matter how attractive they are.

...........and the other cars have practicality issues.

The Panamera has only two strick rear seats, if we are speaking of "practicality" then that alone leaves the Panamera at the same level, the rest are just details to justify an ugly design choice, if you want practicality you go for an RS6 avant stationwagon or a SUV, not a four-door-coupe.

Agree 100%. Anthing else is denial or Porsche-google. This collage leaves it very clear, every single other design marries the foor doors with the coupe lines armoniously and in a sportly fashion, except the Panamera station-wagon which stands out as the opposite. Looking at this collage there is no argument or way you can mask it.

If you want a practical car, then go for stationwagon, a SUV has less space. If you want luxus and comfort pared with sportiveness go for the Panamera.

    Carlos Panamera isn´t 4-door-coupé.
