Driving a rented 911 in the alps this summer

I'm turning 4.0 this May, and what would be a proper birthday gift for a petrolhead like me?

Giving AVIS in Munich a call and renting a 911 for a weekend of course, so I did Smiley

I have talked about this for several years now with a friend ,who is also turning 4.0, and we decided that this was the year to do it.

The overall plan is to drive from Munich to Andermatt in Switzerland and stay there in order to drive the "golden triangle" of the Furka, Susten and Grimsel passes. (Do a 3D flyover in Google Earth to see why).

I haven't been able to specify coupe or cab, or transmission yet, because they will get new cars before we arrive. Hopefully the new cars will be the facelift 911s, and if possible I will get a cab with PDK.

This will all take place on the 12-15th of june, and I have already been in contact with Eric (Gnil) who will hopefully be able to meet us on top of one of the passes on Saturday the 13th. If anyone else would like to join in, please let me know Smiley

I will of course take lots of pics and post them hereSmiley

    Sounds like a great plan.

Unfortunately, I'll be on vacation in the US during that time (well not unfortunately for the vacation but for me not being able to me you guys - just to be precise...)

You could also give Avis in Bonn/Köln a call. They are quite close to an old one-way toll road that may entertain you even more than the Alps.

Great plan! I did this triangle couple of times before. I suggest also to plan an night at the lago maggiore - check the beautiful Isola Bella ;) You even can go to Milan from there.

I will put this date in my calander. It might be, that I'm on a business trip, but if I will be home, I will make it happen and meet you guys there.

    Keep me in loop!

Fantastic plan, it is also the idea of me and one of my best mates to do it with a Carrera from Avis. We are waiting for the excuse to burn that money.... by the way happy to hear that here are people older than me....Smiley

Sounds like a great idea to me! I did the Sustenpass last year, but in an Alfa Romeo 147.Smiley I would love to do it again in a decent car.

How did you book the car,do they have a web site? I checked Autoeurope, but they only list Boxsters, 430's and Gallardo's.

Re: Driving a rented 911 in the alps this summer

    Tim,

that´s a great idea and in fact the same thing (not necessarily rented) I am about to plan. Possibly prior to version 4.0 though. Smiley In the last two years, Avis offered 997 C2S Cab and Coupe with manual in my region.

Avis is about the only one that offers 911s in Germany for such suitable conditions and at virtually any destination. As on all premium cars, the mileage is limited to a couple hundred kilometers a day.  If one is not limited to the 911, Europcar and Sixt offer a range of premium cars as well (Mercedes SL, BMW 6 series etc.).

Yes Avis has a website, www.avis.deSmiley

But to book a "special" car like a 911, it's best to call the station you are renting from, so I called Avis in Munich.

Yes, you are limited to 200 km a day, and you pay 0.84 euro pr km over that. The car itself is 199 euro pr day.

Temm, are you sure this covers all costs? I remember renting one here in Switzerland a couple of years ago (before I owned one myself). It cost me much more than this. I believe it was around CHF1400.-- overall.

199 euro per day sounds like a good deal. Believe me, I wouldn't rent you my Carrera S for 199 euro per day.
