Re: Panamera - Not a good start

That article sidebat just reminded me of Porsche's timing.

It's 2 out of 2 now that Porsche developed a 4 door sedan during a recession.

Maybe we can blame Porsche for the recession. haha

Re: Panamera - Not a good start

Yep. And the 928 was introduced right after (during) the oil crisis of the 70s.

If you think of the business cycles, their duration, and the gestation period of developing a car, you have a "beating" or aliasing effect. In any case, it is better to buy a car that was developed during the boom times, as the manufacturer is less likely to have cut corners, as opposed to buying one that was developed during bad times (think 996 and 986, with that underengineered M96 engine).

Re: Panamera - Not a good start

This has to be the new color called Topaz Brown.  My dad had a 1978 Topaz Brown BMW 518i Smiley good 'ol times.

Re: Panamera - Not a good start

There's the explanation for the odd roofline, as it meets the hatchback. From the article: "It was going to be lower still at first, but Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking, a tall and bulky man, called for more headroom."

It sounds to me like a late change in the design. Too bad; we could have had a more elegant roofline...

Re: Panamera - Not a good start

It seems like Porsche listened to the general, at least the North American market, about the importance of a proper cupholder, we absolutely hates those stupidly complicated, multi-levered useless frames they called cupholders. They are useless to hold drinks, and even more useless to hold anything else.

That round cup in the Panamera is a good start, looks too shallow to be really useful, but at least there is one. Even when it's not holding drinks, it can still be use for holding change, cellphones, and all sorts of junk one want to be put close, within reach.

Re: Panamera - Not a good start

    Misha011,

We do have a problem Smiley. Topaz Brown and ABBA the best of 70s, can't go wrong Smiley.  Now it makes sense why my Dad bought so much Aluminum foils during that time Smiley.

I don't like brown either, but the color seems to be getting pushed more and more by manufacturers.  At Geneva, I saw dark metallic brown cars at Mercedes, Bentley, BMW, Porsche (a Cayenne Turbo S outside the press lounge), and several other stands.

So the Panamera Turbo gets the extendable rear wing, the regular ones only get the rising one?

That last photo really looks like a Cayman, more muscular and bulkier.

Re: Panamera - Not a good start

I wonder about the rear spoiler too, seems too harsh of a slope to ever accomodate anything larger and fixed like the ones on a gt3

Funny, the shoulder is what I like best about the 911 and least in the Panamera

Re: Panamera - Not a good start

Seems that Carrera GT has same steep slope with a fixed wing.  In any event, I personally like a wing that is unnoticeable until it is needed for stability.

Re: Panamera - Not a good start

Interesting design problem.  My guess is the designers were faced with the decision of making the rear spoiler in the exterior color, or in black to make the rear window look larger (like FL Cayenne).  I think the spoiler in black looks a bit like an add-on when extended, but understand from an overall design standpoint that black was the decision.

Re: Panamera - Not a good start

Seem like the spoiler deployed (exntended to the rear) and slide to both side (left and right) from the middle?

Re: Panamera - Not a good start

The problem is if it malfunctions and doesn't retract the sides when it goes back it will scratch the hell of the paint on the sides.

I suppose it will be fail-safe. If first, the sides don't fold it doesn't go down.

Question is, does a car like the Panamera really need such a "thing"? Smiley
