Coolant level question in 2005 997s

I have about 30,000 miles on my 2005 997S. Never had any problems with engine temp and have never observed any coolant leaks. Yesterday I got a low coolant level warning, so I checked the level and it was below "min". I topped it off with a litre of water and a litre of antifreeze and that just got it back up to a normal level.

    My question is:

Is it possible this amount of coolant loss is normal over 3 years or is it more likely I have a leak ? No fluids on the garage floor, no burning coolant smell and temp has never been past 175 deg.  Not sure what to make of it...

Look around under the car for crusty evidence (see photo above of 997 engine). Back at the beginning near new model introduction, some guys just DIY tightened these bolts and then were fine. Yo have a 2005 so maybe the same problem?

The other thing? With age the rubber hoses expand and thus create more volume so the coolant level goes down. Not sure if they can expand enough with age to trigger low coolant warning.

    Good luck.

The dealership replaced my 997S' water pump over a year ago for leaking.  The appearance from below is very similar to the shot, above.  Some of these cars never seem to lose a drop; others seem to be low.  Another big clue is the cap.  If you can't maintain level,--suspect the cap.  You may find a white residue along the edge of the cap.  The cap may need to be replaced.

Something went wrong with the above post which I can't edit.  Instead of displaying 'preview' which is what I pressed, it posted straight away with no edit or delete facility..?

I was trying to link to a previous thread which may have been relevant to this one.

    I'll try re-posting later....

Sorry John, the long URL broke the layout, one of the things we want to do better with the design update.

Just logged back on.  Thanks Easy, the thread I was linking to seems now to be evident.

All I was trying to say was that pumps can fail inside of 30,000 miles, but evidence of such an occurence is usually obvious from the pool of water on the garage floor.  Other posts in this thread may help explain other reasons for loss of coolant. Smiley

I have an 06 997 C2S that had a coolant leak ever since it was new.  The head gasket was replaced by the dealer at 7k miles, but that didn't solve the problem.  I also replaced the cap a while ago because it had white crust on it, but I still have the leak and the new cap has the same white crust on it.  Over the last 1500 miles, I've used 20 ounces of coolant.  There are no leaks and no smells.  The car has approximately 24k miles on it now.

    Anything else I can try?

Sorry to hear of your trouble. IMO, Porsche should have fixed that by now: it's not extremely complicated stuff.

I'm forced to think the technicians you have are at fault. I'd take it to another Porsche Dealer/Service in your area.  OR: I'd give them one more try to fix it and then I'd call Porsche and COMPLAIN and have them speak to that service department manager. Smiley  Good luck buddy!

The most frustrating argument I hear from the dealer is "that's normal."    I went through this frustration with the oil consumption on this car as well, and after I read Porsche's technical bulletin on this topic (1 liter every 600 miles or so), I've accepted the fact that I have high oil consumption that is "normal."

Is there an official statement on what is normal coolant consumption on the 997?
