AutoBild Sportscars: Cayenne TTS vs. ML63 and X6-50i

Some test results from the recent issue of AutoBild Sportscars:

    0-200kph (top-speed):

    Cayenne TTS: 16.4s (286kph)

    ML63: 18.8s (255kph)

    X6-50i: 20.8s (253kph)

    100-0kph (warm):

    Cayenne TTS: 36.8m

    ML63: 36.8m

    X6-50i:  37.0m

    Fuel consumption during test:

    Cayenne TTS: 21.9 l/100km

    ML63: 21.3 l/100km

    X6-50i:  14.9 l/100km

    Weight of test car:

    Cayenne TTS: 2.45t

    ML63: 2.4t

    X6-50i: 2.4t

Price in Germany (incl. 19% VAT):

    Cayenne TTS: 133k

    ML63: 105k

    X6-50i:  75k (!)

TTS and X6 were quickest and best handling on the road (ML63 suffers from very heavy understeer and clumsy handling). Off-road the ML was fastest.

Re: AutoBild Sportscars: Cayenne TTS vs. ML63 and X6-50i

Wow, the X5 looks like a bargain! Great fuel consumption difference for the performance level.

Re: AutoBild Sportscars: Cayenne TTS vs. ML63 and X6-50i

That's what I thought as well. The performance differences are much smaller than the price (and fuel consumption!) differences Smiley Also, handling wise the X6 seems to be pretty close to the CTTS.

Re: AutoBild Sportscars: Cayenne TTS vs. ML63 and X6-50i

I agree completely. with what has been said.  I also would like to add that ML63 and CTTS are the top sport versions of their model ranges.  Upcoming X6M will probably lose some ground in price and fuel consumption comparisons ( I still think it will still be lower than M63 and CTTS), however it may even pass CTTS on performance figures.

Re: AutoBild Sportscars: Cayenne TTS vs. ML63 and X6-50i

yup...theat's not really the X6 50i league. fairer comparison would have been against Cayenne GTS and ML550 and then both would have received a good spanking...

the X6M will be the new king of power suv's I am certain.....

the cayenne 2 Turbo will be needed to play against the X6M.

Re: AutoBild Sportscars: Cayenne TTS vs. ML63 and X6-50i

The current Cayenne is practically an upgraded 2004 model and its design brief was to be good both on and off road. It was not designed as a 100% road or piste car.

The X6 is a new model with a novelty value due to its unusual shape and therefore it is the car du jour.

Next year the new Cayenne will end the X6 craze. I predict Porsche will be forced to offer a Cayenne.2 model without the transfer gears reduction box that is standard on all Cayennes and with very limited off road ability (like the BMW X-series) in order to compete better on the road. A contradiction in terms!

In a way it is sad to design an SUV and then start reducing its off road ability, the primary objective of its existence, in order to gain time on a piste or in 0-200 acceleration. IMO this is madness but unfortunately all is marketing and creating impressions these days!

Re: AutoBild Sportscars: Cayenne TTS vs. ML63 and X6-50i

i guess that hardly anyone takes their cayennes offroad. limiting factors being the tires and that it's simply too expensive to be trashed around offroad.

i went offroad in mine a few times. nothing too difficult but it was really good offroad in the sand. even with the limiting tires.

the X6 mainly has the edge lookwise.it is a good departure from the standard suv look. kudos to bmw.

the problem with the cayenne 2 is that it simply looks like every other suv with the standard hatch at the back.

Porsche's goal at the time of the Touareg/Cayenne joint project was for an SUV that was excellent off road too. The fact that the Cayenne is excellent on road, given its tougness and go anywhere ability, is an achievement.

You can fit all weather or even off road tyres on Cayennes if you do off-roading, with the exception I think of the Turbo S, the large brakes of which require big wheels. With these optional tyres the Cayenne is a go-everywhere car in comfort and speed.

With the new fashion for SUVs that cannot go off-road (see X series), Porsche will be forced to offer an "off road delete" option in the next Cayenne to save weight and gain more speed. For example the GTS doesn't need a reduction box and off road capable tough suspension. Without those it would be nearer or better on road that the BMW.

As regards looks not everybody likes the X6. For example personally I find it a "frankenstein car"(you know the novel where the scientist made a man out of dissimilar and not fitting body partsSmiley) designed like this for the sole purpose of being different and attracting novelty seekers. Of course many people like it and buy it and nothing wrong with that, its their money they can spend it any way they like. BMW as a mass producer can afford to have many similar style cars like the X3 the X5 the X6 and buyers can pick and choose. Porsche can only produce one SUV and recognising that, a more conventional, non-eccentric design with some Porsche styling cues, like the existing and the upcoming Cayenne is the right choice.

Re: AutoBild Sportscars: Cayenne TTS vs. ML63 and X6-50i

I am very (positively) surprised by the low fuel consumption of the X6 5.0i.  I thought it would rather be in the 17l / 100km  range with the 750i being in the 14.5L / 100km range.

I don't know how this test was conducted but the BMW is speed-limited to 255km/h whereas the porsche can do 286km/h. I don't know if the testers were doing top speed runs all the time in the Cayenne and having fun.

Of course it's insane, insane ugly. Smiley

But after I have seen the new 5 GT, I incline to admit it's not the worst looking BMW. Smiley

Opinions matter, I for one love the X6 styling along with its driving dynamics.  It really grows on you.   If it did not exist, the choice for me would be X5 not Cayenne or ML.

i sold my cayenne turbo and went for the x6 50i and never looked back.

it's far more clever than the cayenne in many many ways.

i am all for porsche.....just not when the alternative is simply better !
