Did I overfill my oil ? Consequenses? solutuions?

So I changed the oil in my 2005 997s. I drove the back of the car up on ramps and then unscrewed the drain plug and let it drain for about 20 minutes or so. I changed the oil filter as well. Replaced the plug with new washer and then filled it back up with 8.25 L's of Mobile 1 0-W40. I thought better to underfill and add more later. So I drive the car around for a but and then find a nice flat surface to check the oil on but the electronic check says it's ABOVE full !!

I'm a little worried. Anyone know if there are consequences or am I just worrying too much. My only thought is that I didn't let enough oil drain out (oil wasn't warmed up enough?) or that since the rear of the car was up on ramps all the old oil didn't drain.

Should I re-do the whole oil change ?

    Who's the expert ?

Re: Did I overfill my oil ? Consequenses? solutuions?

i'd drive it easy for two days and then check again. too much oil is bad.....but not if you do not drive it too hard.

one mark above full is no problem. a liter or so too much is not good.

otoh as it seems you are pretty confident in doing your own oil servivces....you might want to let half a litre or so out and then top up a bit if necessary.....better safe than sorry.

Re: Did I overfill my oil ? Consequenses? solutuions?

PCA answer to the questions is below. Also, my advice for messing with that drain plug.

I'd just get under there, do it and "fuggeddaboudit." LOL.

    oil overfill both questions .jpg

Here's my advice on draining a small amount of oil. It _can_ be done without getting a bath:

Get a short sleeve shirt and gloves on

Put a pan under drain plug

With a wrench loosen drain plug

With your fingers start loosening drain plug

NOW READ THIS: you are paying strict attention, you are feeling, looking, yearning, longing, for the tiny little "click" that means the end of the plug thread has hit the end of the drain hole thread. IN ORDER TO FEEL THIS: you must keep upward pressure on the plug as you loosen the plug.

***Listen OR feel for click by keeping upward pressure on plug***

Keep UPWARD PRESSURE ON THE PLUG  Upward pressure allows the "click" to happen and be heard.

When you get to the "click" just tilt back the plug away from the hole about the width of a human hair.

Oil will dribble out; let an estimated amount leak out. If you do this wrong oil will explode out and you'll get a bath.

REPEAT: keep pressure on the plug, do not let it unseat from the drain hole.

NOTE: sounds drastic but ONLY if you lose control of the plug. The only way to lose control of the plug is to stop paying attention. ANYBODY can do this if they pay attention.

    Rescrew and tighten plug.

    Add/Check oil to proper level.

Check plug after a few days and a few weeks, because you necessarily reused the copper crush washer and the plug will have a greater though extremely small chance of loosening.

Oh, BTW, drain plug has about 3/4 inch (18mm) of threads so this takes lots of patience to pay attention waiting for the "click."

Re: Did I overfill my oil ? Consequenses? solutuions?

How about a siphon pump instead ?

Anyone tried siphoning oil from the top ?

Re: Did I overfill my oil ? Consequenses? solutuions?

Can't do it on our non dipstick cars. The pumps are used when the dip stick hole has a straight shot to the sump; that's the only way they'll work.

UNLESS: by some huge coincidence you can find a passage thru the engine to the sump from the oil filler hole.

I wouldn't even try it because imagine the terror if the hose gets stuck in the internal convolutions of the engine by some camming action when you try to pull it out..

BTW, if you don't believe me, there was a thread a while back on this exact question of siphoning oil due to overfill... . Same somewhat tentative conclusion: won't work.

I do not know that it would work, but since you are the one with the problem you might want to ask your dealer's service department whether you couldn't just remove the oil filter housing, pour off the oil, refit the filter housing and start the engine. Smiley

From my understanding, the filter housing contains 0.7 liters of oil.

Come to think of it, is this the cause of the initial problem? Smiley

The oil refill quantity for your car should be reduced by 0.7 liters if you do not replace the oil filter, as the oil in the fiilter does not drain off when you remove the sump plug.

YAY fritz! Excellent idea. If you're careful and not a klutz, you could do that procedure a few times to get rid of enough oil. Then again: with the oil filter and housing you're messing with a critical component (compared to a drain plug) which requires a refined DIY sensibility.

WELL... I snaked a pump down the oil fill tube and pumped out about 3/4 of a litre and now it's PERFECT !

    After

Some other misc. pictures from my 30k mile service

Re: Did I overfill my oil ? Consequenses? solutuions?

Doesn't the old air filter look REALLY clean after 30k miles ?!?!???

Good, We're glad it worked for you.

I have a unit like this one and I could not for the life of me get that tubing  down thru the oil filler cap opening 8-12 inches let alone all the way down to the sump. Smiley

I wonder how you did it!? Smiley

Selfmade is probably always the best! Then you know what & who done to your car. Like it, but dont have the facilities for myself - unfortunately.

Just on the side, where in SF did you get the Mobil 1?

Re: Did I overfill my oil ? Consequenses? solutuions?

Picked it up at Kragen Autoparts.....
