    997GT2: Several questions

Am seriously considering ordering a 997GT2; have several questions

Owned Porsches in past (997TT and 996TTS).  Car will be my only car, for both short daily urban commute and more importantly for weekend pleasure drives (brisk freeways and local twisties in mountains); have no interest in track driving

Am a risk-averse driver; not interested in setting any speed records, but really enjoy precise steering, brake pedal feel, chassis balance and seamless, easily available torque

Is latest thinking that 997GT2 FL will arrive shortly after 997TT FL?  If so, is FL GT2 likely to have PDK?

PCCB: Had issues w/initial bite of 997TT PCCB esp in rainy weather driving; is that still a notable issue w/latest PCCB?

Tires: Any observations re: these latest tires in terms of traction/braking/hydroplaning if driving in 50F on rainy freeways, with imperfect pavement (worst CA winter conditions)?

Exhaust note: Drive w/windows closed and no audio on to enjoy exhaust note; IMO, was a major weakness of 997TT; any comparisons of GT2 exhaust note (from driver's standpoint w/windows closed) in exuberant driving?

RMS issues: Have heard anecdotes of 997GT3 w/RMS; is this a major known issue w/997GT2 as well?

Alcantara steering wheel: Is this wheel's rim as thick as the 997TT's optional thicker rim sport steering wheel (?XPA)? Is Alcantara more grippy than the leather rim in sporty driving?  Any downsides vs leather rim?

Ground clearance: 997TT was a bit of a hassle in many routine urban driving situations.  Does GT2's stiffer chassis make scraping front spoiler about as likely as softer 997TT chassis (though GT2 has lower ride ht)?  Is GT2 front spoiler enough of a violent scrape risk to cause one to be extra-cautious in fast driving on mountain roads w/rapid elevation/camber changes? Is GT2 front spoiler an easily replaceable ?$500 plastic spoiler lip as on 997TT?

Many thanks in advance for any thoughts

From what you posted above the GT2 is THE car for you Smiley

    - I would not expect a FL before end of 2010 (if any will be launched at all). Chances for a FL are (based on my opinion) 50%, not higher. Thus, if you shall wait for a FL you might end up with never owning a 997 GT2 at all...

     - PCCB in the GT2 is just perfect (except for some noises which do not matter much). No problems even with rain or snow.

    - The Pirelli Corsa (either those or the Michelin Cups are delivered with the GT2) are fine even in wet and colder climate. If temp approaches 0°C winter tires should be considered. Of course the handling suffers quite a bit from the use of winter tires.

    - Sound is great. Inside the GT2 you somehow feel like sitting in the engine compartment... Of course, the sound quality of a Ferrari is very different. Much more refined - but still the sound of the GT2 has lots of charme.

    - no RMS issues known in case of the GT2 (has the GT1 motor block).

     - the steering wheel handles fine. I think (from my memory) that is approx. as thick as the special order TT wheel.

    - ground clearance is a certain issue. Not much worse than in case of the regular TT, though. Also, the plastic part below the front wing is very robust. Its design prevents visible scratches.

Go for it - you won't regret it  Smiley

    Re: 997GT2: Several questions

    i agree with aboce however.....

    - ground clearance is quite a bit less than the turbo. areas that i clear with the turbo without issues the gt2 is scraping quite hard. but it's only the nose of the car not the underbody. you should be fine.

    - alcantara steering wheel is rather thin. like the standard wheel. you cannot order a thicker alcantara wheel. then again you will not need to as the feel is just fine.

    - i don't think the facelift will include pdk.

Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

    Re: 997GT2: Several questions

The thing with the steering wheel is interesting. For example, Ferrari uses a thicker steering wheel. This is nice - until you try to drive with race gloves... Then you suddenly notice that the Ferrari steering wheel is a bit too thick...

One of so many details where Porsche manages to find the perfect compromise: not too thin, not too thick. Just perfect Smiley

    Re: 997GT2: Several questions

MKSGR and intouch1, thanks for your detailed comments

Indeed, am very tempted to spec a new GT2; will ponder my choice for a few days, largely in terms of spec'g an early MY10 iteration (presumably a few debugs in any new MY)

In any case, thanks again; always reassuring when owners of GT2 have such a strongly positive view

Have you checked with a dealer that you really can still order a GT2?

The GT models are generally only available for limited periods, with extended breaks in production before a new generation is introduced.

    Re: 997GT2: Several questions

    Good point

Had assumed availability as '09 GT2 is still on PCNA configurator, but that's occasionally been misleading in past

Will call dealer to get updated ordering info

Someone mentioned here some time ago that the last gen. GT3 was still carried on the configurator for quite a while after PCNA stopped taking orders for freely "speccable" cars.

    Re: 997GT2: Several questions

Indeed, dealer indicates no more GT2 build spots

Have a long wait ahead of me for new GT2, presumably some time after 997TT FL launch
