    News on 997 turbo facelift

My source told me first deliveries in Sept. 2009.

Will have new engine with PDK.

PDK will be available from Jan. 2010 onwards.

Re: News on 997 turbo facelift

Do you mean it will be retrofitable from Jan 2010?

Or do you mean early cars won't have PDK at all??

according to my source first deliveries won't have PDK.

(Same with GT3 FL. First deliveries in May. But the "interesting" extras will be available from Sept. onwards at the earliest).

Re: News on 997 turbo facelift

pdk with gt3 rs version maybe...? but gt1 block is too big (in theory) for pdk...I'm confused :)

    Let's put it this way:

    DFI engine>PDK

Non DFI GT1 based engine>NO PDK

It has to be good enough to beat Nissan GT-R.  So, Porsche had better load it with all the goodies they can Smiley.

Nissan is not sitting still either.  Turbo needs to clearly dominate whatever Nissan has just around the corner.

PADM will be available in September. Maybe that's what your source means with "interesting options". I would not expect PDK for the GT3...

That's an interesting info you posted (regarding the size of the old GT1 block preventing use of PDK) Smiley

Better not expect Nissan to have much in their GTR pipeline. Remember, the much praised and cheered "V-Spec" is now known to have no additional hp and just 60kg less weight... Not a huge step. I don't think Nissan will do much to improve the GTR. They have other problems to solve now Smiley

Well only when there is snow on the ground Smiley

Seriously, a lot of people like the car to be fast out of the box without spending too much time or money to make it better like you did..

Even current Turbo can beat a GT-R in acceleration. What it needs is better handling.

yes the actual turbo already beats the GTR with no problem...

jus a better handling will put off the GTR of the game

Every time I see a US amateur driver (like me) talks about the Turbo's 7:52 ring time as if it were a failure, I almost want to cry. This is an example of magazine racing at its worst. Wasn't 7:52 the fastest time ever for a 2+2 with manual gear box, let alone one designed to be a daily driver?

Has any car with manual gear box surpassed that mark (or one whose gear box doesn't fall off Smiley)? Seems to be zero, right? http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?fID=0&gID=3&tID=10073&viewThread=y

We all want the current Turbo to be faster, and it is not without flaws, but you must remember it is 7:52 and not 7:32 for many reasons: some passenger comfort, ride height, rear seat, easy clutch & control effort, 4wd, easy ingress and egress, etc. Many owners, including me, want those features. You could have a all-out race car such as the great GT2, or a daily-driver sport car that is stupendously fast, but to expect both might lead to unreasonable and excessive preoccupation with ring time.

when will be Turbo S model introduced?

Re: News on 997 turbo facelift

    You guys crack me up.

A porsche doesn't really need to be much faster than it is.

What it lacks is a driver able to use all it's power... who cares if it's 0.1s faster than the pre FL. You won't feel it anyway. What you need is to learn how to drive it at it's limit. I bet most rennteamers just drive it fast, but no where near its limits.

That' why I prefer a GT3 over a turbo. It might not be as powerfull as a turbo but it will give you so much more pleasure, even if you're driving it slow, like an rookie would.

Information available to date (i.e. rumours) indicates that the "S" version might be launched in the 2nd half of 2010. Such timing would provide a final "boost" for the 997TT towards its end of production.

I agree that 0.1 or 0.2s faster to 60mph you aren't going to feel between a 997.1 Turbo and a 997.2 one.  However I don't see how you can bring a GT3 into the comparison.

The attraction of a Turbo over a GT3 is the 'point-and-shoot' ability.  Most Turbo owners aren't interested in handling at the limit, they care about G forces OUT of corners not through them. And given the massive toque difference between a N/A 911 and a Turbo charged one, there is no comparison on this feeling.  Seat of the pants acceleration feel is all about the torque...

And how exactly does a GT3 feel good driving slow?  I'm confused smiley00076.gif

I kind of agree..., but for public road use I have to say not "Porsche[s]" but the Turbo doesn't really need to be much faster than it is.

I use it for passing on local twisty rural highways. Too many slowpokes get in front of you. The car is blisteringly fast and CAN scare if not terrify other drivers. For instance, I have plenty of room to pass but the _oncoming_ car would sh*t and swerve off the road because he can't imagine I'm in an extremely fast car which will get back in my lane fast enough when overtaking the slowpoke in front of me. IOW, passing opportunities would be even greater but taking advantage of them would cause accidents because of brain-dead oncoming traffic.

Other times when it's safe, the serious acceleration of car closes the gap caused by the car a few miles ahead. Massive brakes slow back down in an instant which eliminates cop radar or visual ambush risk when terrain demands. Talk about FUN to drive? Yeah!

That said, I wouldn't want to part with a single HP/Tq value of this car. It's got exactly what it needs for such driving. Maybe I'd like 20 more HP! Smiley

    Smiley

Other times, when nobody's around there are certain known sections of road, with wide shoulders, which see serious "limit threats." Smiley

Couldnt find the thread w/ the pics of this car (video) but it's relevant here too. Still say it's the next 911. Even sounds like it. And doubt they would be filling up in front if it was a front engined car.
