Re: Your thoughts on moving from P-car to BMW

    Read their heads!

      http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/comparison_test/coupes/2008_bmw_m3_vs_2009_nissan_gt_r_vs_2008_porsche_911_turbo_comparison_...

As one test driver put it, “The M3 is the car that the driver has the most control over.” Oversteer, understeer, and neutrality are all on the M3’s résumé, but they’re dependent on the driver’s inputs. The chassis has no surprises, no snap reactions, no bad habits—even midcorner bumps are sopped up without drama. Strong brakes have excellent initial bite and didn’t fade even after many, many laps. The BMW’s lap time lagged 1.5 seconds behind the 911 Turbo’s, but that translates to an average speed throughout the lap that was only 0.3 mph slower than the far more powerful Porsche. Thus the BMW, though suffocated by the thin air at 4200 feet, managed to make up most of the difference by cornering faster.

Unlike the heavyweights, the BMW feels smaller the harder it is driven. Part of that feel is due to light steering, but the importance of having the lowest mass and the narrowest width also plays a huge role.

America's Best Handling Car: Track Testing

    BMW M3
    BEST LAP (MIN:SEC): 1:42.964
    AVG. LATERAL ACCELERATION: 0.593 G
    SUBJECTIVE RANKING: 2ND

Pobst's first three words after his M3 track laps: "What a ride!" And then he got exuberant. "Makes you a believer in rear drive. Refined, but it rocks, too. Given the car's power and the fact that it's riding on street tires, the traction is excellent. Turn 4 is a fast, top of third gear corner, and while exiting at over 100 mph, I could push the M3 into a small drift. Sweetheart. Overall balance is really good-I don't remember much understeer at all. Also, the M3's steering feel is one of the best here. You've got that big fat wheel rim in your hands. Communicative and quick steering, with great satisfaction. There's body roll but not a sense of it. The damping keeps everything under control without harshness. Greater refinement than in the RX-8; you can feel there's more money in the pot." Pobst experienced a few hiccups with the DSG transmission ("shifts were harsh, and a few times when I tried to downshift it stayed in the higher gear"), but he had nothing but kudos for the chassis. "Not ready to say it's better than the R8, but what a ride!"

SUM UP: The lofty 3 Series chassis raised to even loftier heights.

    PORSCHE 911 TURBO
    BEST LAP (MIN:SEC): 1:42.507
    AVG. LATERAL ACCELERATION: 0.589 G
    SUBJECTIVE RANKING: 4TH

Since the OP likes his old M3 a lot, there is good chance he will like the new one more (and much more than his C4S). I suggest a test drive before buying your next car to make sure it suits you!

Re: Your thoughts on moving from P-car to BMW

Actually, these Car & Driver statements and test results illustrate again why only SportAuto (Supertest) is a solid benchmark.

Here are some Sportauto Supertest figures (997TT vs. M3):

NBR: ca. 13s advantage for the 997TT (7.52 vs. 8.05)

HHR: ca. 2.5s advantage for the 997TT (1.11,9 vs. 1.14,3)

    (both cars on cup tires)

The Sportauto results indicate that  M3 and 997TT play in very different leagues. And in fact, tthese cars do! As much as I like our M3 (with DKG) - I would never (ever) argue that this car is in the same league as a 997TT. These US car magazines do have a very distorted perspective. Their results are pretty much meaningless. Same problem as with the GTR tests. It is always best to wait for Sportauto Supertest Smiley

Re: Your thoughts on moving from P-car to BMW

Pobst is a successful racing driver (including 911 GT3 Cup Car) and his subjective opinion bears some considerable weight.

Re: Your thoughts on moving from P-car to BMW

I used to have M3s before I purchased my 997 Carrera S coupe manuel w/-20mm LSD, and I prefer the M3.

Now I sold my Porsche, will wait for the new CSL if it ever released. If not, I will get the regular one.

I don't like 2 things about Porsche cars:

    1) It loves to rip of its customers; charging extra money for a thicker steering wheel, extra money for Sport chrono if you have PDK, extra money for painted Porsche crest for the wheels, extra money for the LEDs on Cayman, extra money for LSD and so on.

    2) In terms of chassie balance, I love throttle oversteer, but weight on the rear axle, the car has light nose, very sensitive on weight transfer.

On the other hand, maybe my first Porsche had been a facelifted 911 with PDK and LSD with PASM, I would have loved the car way more than my 997.1 manuel w/ sports chassie Carrera S.

    Kerem,

I replied to this thread without knowing that you started it :)

We have the same problem with different reasons. E92 M3 CSL is our medicine but right now it is unlikely to be released.

There is no new CSL planned. But you can build always build your own.

I love 911s but the balance and playfulness of M3s at the limit is also very appealing.

Re: Your thoughts on moving from P-car to BMW

I used to have an E46 M3 with a few options and no sunroof, BBS RC lightweight wheels, Superprint race lightweight exhaust, I even had the recaro pole position buckets.

The car was around 1430 kg. But it wasn't like a CSL which I had from one of my friends for a day and I fell in love with the car.

The noise, interior, handling, feeling, the act of SMG were all different.

I still believe in 2 years we might have an M3 model variant which will be like an CSL. Maybe just something with BMW performance parts but I believe we will have something, hopefully Smiley

When is your TTS coming?  It is definitely a bang for the buck since it does not get raped with taxes.  I am looking for it.

I thought I posted a long answer to you guys which somehow did not go through and is lost yesterday.  Briefly I wrote about how we had limited track source and opportunity and because of the conditions of the roads and highways, going hardcore is a PIA for a daily driven car.  Also I will never buy anything without test driving, even if this means I have to take a weekend trip to Europe to test the ones on my list which are unavailable for test drive here.  I also miss (although not priority) being low profile which is important for a daily driver.  However it ilooks like my C4S will be here for a little longer than I expect, not really a good time to sell one.  I will have time to think about your suggestions and opinions while I wait for my C4S to leave for its new home.

Sounds as if the Cayenne Turbo S would be the best choice for the region you're living in. Smiley

FWIW, I have an E46M3 and a 997TT; had a 997S. When choosing which car to drive the TT always wins over the M3 (unless bulky cargo transport, or bodily/mental fatigue is a factor). When I had the 997S the decision was significantly easier to make in favor of the M3. Smiley

Re: Your thoughts on moving from P-car to BMW

Since my wife is using our Cayenne Turbo S family car, I'm "stuck" with the M3 Cab DKG for daily driving. Trust me: it is a nice car but I would prefer a 997(even the Carrera without S) ANYTIME. The 997 is a different beast, a different league.

Re: Your thoughts on moving from P-car to BMW

Just reread this thread that I started a while back after I decided to sell my 2006 C4S.  I just want to give an update and ask for more opinions.  Actually I wonder if I should have opened a new thread. As you may guess 2nd hand market specially at this kind of price range is dead so my car is still with me:)

However there is an idea to play.  I may have an option to trade my 2006 C4S Tip (Smiley) with 22000 km. with a 2006 M6 with 32000 km plus a decent amount of cash.

I would like to know if any of you guys have any experiences with a BMW M6 coupe.   Specially what are the main differences on pre 2007 models and current one.  Is it reliable? What should I expect if I decide to go this route?   I know fuel consumption will be terrible but I consume 19 lts with C4S anyways and this might be more suitable car for me at the moment.
