    Car broke down...stuck in first

Broke down last night. Stick won't move left to right, only up and down. It seems it disengaged. On top of that, could not tow it because the flat bed they sent after 1 hour was not the appropriate one. The front bumper would have smashed against it. So had to leave the car at work in a not so safe place. Hope it is in one piece. Anyone had something like this happen?

Re: Car broke down...stuck in first

Usually, it is the cables transmitting the movement from the stick to the gearbox.

If so, I doubt that they are damaged or torn on a new car.

Most probably they are out of the brackets they are normally attached to. Easy fix if you exclude the trouble of getting the car to the workshop.

Re: Car broke down...stuck in first

Thanks. Hopefully it is as simple as that.

Re: Car broke down...stuck in first

Happened to me on a 996tt in the middle of nowhere in s of france and I also freaked out.. However the following morning I lifted the car a few inches and I fixed it in 5 minutes after consulting my mechanic. If the same problem then it is the end tip of the cable that comes out o its housing. Its a simple motion to just put it back in.

Re: Car broke down...stuck in first

It is good to tie the cable tips to the brackets using simple plastic cable ties. It will protect against the problem recurring.

I know it doesn't sound very sophisicated, but it does the trick.

Re: Car broke down...stuck in first

Thanks for the info. I hope it is just that. The car needs to go for service anyway so I'll let the dealer fix it. I am now more inclined to think it is not as bad as it looks, although it is frustrating.

Re: Car broke down...stuck in first

Happened to me with an '05 997 C2S. I was fortunately stuck in second and could limp to a fortuitously nearby Porsche dealer, but I was just about to get on a highway where I reckon it could have caused a serious accident - especially if it had failed between gears leaving me in neutral.

Also, happened to me..The clutch cable broke on my 987S and was stuck in fourth gear. Porsche dealer replaced cable.

I wonder how many serious accidents, even fatalities there have been? Seems like a pretty serious and obviously rather systemic problem: at least 4 out of 169 people reading this post have had a similar experience  - that's at least 2.5% - assuming all drive Porsches! We're not talking something trivial here. Certainly not as bad as losing streering or brakes, but still pretty hairy!

No clutch cable in modern Porsches!

The cables referred to here are those that transmit the movement from the gear lever to the gearbox. They are long due to the distance of the gearbox fro the lever, especially on mid-engined cars where they also need go over the engine which is a more complicated route.

Re: Car broke down...stuck in first

    Reginos,

Do you know if that cable is exposed underneath the car? I remembered that a couple of weeks ago a big truck tire thread went under my car, barely missing my front bumper but absolutely hitting the car below. Maybe that's what damaged it?

Repair was fairly simple and quick but still it is worrysome that it could happen again if that cable is exposed.

Yes, the end part where it engages is exposed.

Ask them to tie up the end of the cables, where the joints engage to the brackets, with electrician's cable ties for added security. Most probably they have done it already because most Porsche technicians do that. Then you won't have to worry at all.

    Thanks! Appreciate the info.

Reginos...Thanks for pointing out my error on the cable description...I actuallly split mine in half...Good thing it was covered under warrranty.

Re: Car broke down...stuck in first

Just happened to me also. '05 997 C2. Stuck in 4th. gear. Not a good situation to be in on the freeway. Anyway, I'm done with Porsche. Too many headaches; RMS, oil separator, check engine light has a mind of it's own, same with TPMS. Local dealer is pathetic at best.

It's a shame. I always wanted to own a Porsche. Runs great most of the time, but I lost confidence in the vehicle.

Not sure what I'm getting next. M3 doesn't sound like a winner; the Lexus IS-F rides like a truck. Anyone have any thoughts on the Mercedes C63 AMG???

Re: Car broke down...stuck in first

It is astonishing to me that Porsche never issued a recall  - especially if this can be fixed with a tie wrap!

Re: Car broke down...stuck in first

I agree completely. Dealer said it is a "rare occurrence", but not from what I read hear. I did fail to mention two things. I had to replace the clutch at 45k and it is a 997SSmiley

Re: Car broke down...stuck in first

Nicolas, Not sure where you live in upstate NY but I am north of the NY city and have found a good dealer for service.

Re: Car broke down...stuck in first

Apparently there are a number of revisions on the gear selector cables for the 997 and 987 models. As has been stated already , the cables can become unlipped from the gearbox if the cable brakes free from its anchorage further back. In the case of my 987 the internal cable actually broke where the flexible part joined the rigid section at the gearbox end. It seems to ba a fairly common problem according to the mechanic that replaced it. . The mileage on my car was about 35K miles at the time.
