    Is Ferrari losing its looks?

    From the NT Times.

    http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/10/are-ferraris-losing-their-good-looks/?ex=1242622800&en=4aa10090bfc340d7&ei=50...

My question is who in the hell does 195mph and where? It is a sad excuse for a rather pedestrian looking model line up.

Very good article and so true. Unfortunately. Smiley

I was cool with Pinnafarina's styling through the 360 Modena. Then the F430 I was sort of iffy, but warmed up it (although I hate the sound of the engine - the mid and top end shriek of the 360/355 is gone).
I still can figure out which end of the Enzo should be facing forward. 612 was about as interesting and beautiful as a scalloped retangle. (They should have took the Maserati Quattroporte design).
And I haven't felt entralled about the styling since...

Re: Is Ferrari losing its looks?

As a real enthusiast I feel like I've been lucky enough to see, in person and on track where they belong, some of the finest machinery to come out of Maranello. I'm talking about things like 250 TR, GTO, SWB, Cal Spyder, etc. My question is how can one really be expected to dazzle when compared to some of these machines? The bar for design was set so high that there is no real way for modern Ferrari designers to make something that people are excited about. The comparison will always be there.

Furthermore, I think modern Ferrari designers are simply tring to follow the scheme set forth by their predecessors, Pininfarina, Scaglietti, Drogo, et al, by trying to make the "fastest" shape possible. The GTO was never "styled", its style evolved directly from its function of aerodynamic slipperyness, and little more. I can't fault these people for making the Enzo look the way it does for this very reason. That said, I quite like the 599, not pretty, but it works for me.

Re: Is Ferrari losing its looks?

I disagree with the article. Modern Ferraris are not always the epitome of beauty but they are striking and aggressive as they should. I find the Enzo just fantastic. It is menacing, low and wide "screaming" power and speed from miles away. It is as gobsmacking as it ought to be. I can understand some of the criticism levied on the 612 and the California though, even if up close and personally the 612 is not that bad looking after all. For the California judgement should be reserved till we see it in the metal (those of us who haven't yet). At the end of the day a Ferrari has to be functional and planted at extremely high speeds and function should come before beauty. Not to mention that I am not alone in saying that I don't always find past Ferraris better looking than their modern counterparts.

Re: Is Ferrari losing its looks?

Both Lambo's and Aston's seem to be getting faster and better looking, so no excuses for Ferrari.

Could be worse, Porsche have totally lost the plot!!  The Panamera and Cayenne are two of the ugliest cars in the history of motoring.

Re: Is Ferrari losing its looks?

They are not as well sorted out as Ferraris though. Perhaps the beauty of Astons gets in the way of aerodynamic performance; they are not renowned for their downforce after all. In any case, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I prefer more striking rather than elegant looks for a supercar. More manly rather than girly cars if you like. By that I don't mean butt ugly but more aggressive rather than pretty. Lamborghinis are a good example of how to be both beautiful and aggressive, even though I still prefer a "racy" Scuderia to a 560 appearance wise.

People who insist that Ferraris used to be beautiful have short memories or want  forget on purpose.

The picture below is from 20+ years ago. Not an exact work of art.  It makes the "California Barbi Cabrio" look gorgeous by comparison!

Re: Is Ferrari losing its looks?

A Testarossa is for sure not the best looking Ferrari, but everyone recognise it as a Ferrari. The California, looks like a Lexus, or a Dacia Convertible Limtied Edition. It's emotional like a bad looking SL.

I never understood why people liked the Testarossa. Guess I'm in the minority because I love the way the Enzo looks. Also think the 360 Stradale is a MUCH better looking car than a 355. Even the F430 which isn't as good looking as the 360 CS is still a better looking car then the 355 imo.  I like the real early Ferrari's & the most recent cars the best, the cars in between (Testarossa/355) are not my cup of tea.  Plus on the newer cars (360/430) pictures never show the cars actual coke bottle shape, the best part of the styling.

Re: Is Ferrari losing its looks?

The epitome of mid-engined Ferrari design is the 308/328 series. The 355 and the 360 are its natural evolutions for the more modern era. The 348 and the current 430 are deviations and they don't look that clean and good.

Similarly the 60s Daytona defines the front-engined Ferrari. This is why the 599 looks great whereas the 400, the 456 and the 612 are poorer shapes.

Re: Is Ferrari losing its looks?

I think that the modern Ferrari is designed in the same spirit as these iconic cars. Just make it fast, if its fast, it will look right. The problem is that our aero modeling equipment is getting so sophisticated these days (CFD) that future Ferraris may end up looking more like F1 cars than any of these below. If they are to make concessions for looks, it will ultimately result in compromising the cars' ability. One of the reasons I've always loved Ferrari is that they are (mostly) uncompromising, and all about performance. Things like the California, then, necessarily worry me about the future philosophy of the company. Although from what DR says, it seems to be pretty good...

Re: Is Ferrari losing its looks?

Oh yeah, give me an F1 looking Enzo replacement (with the performance to back the looks) and I will be one delighted enthusiast!!!

    good point.

Re: Is Ferrari losing its looks?

"The 612 is fussy and ill-proportioned,” he said. “The Enzo is more bug than bird. Even the F430 lacks the visual grace and profile poetry of the old F355, the last lovely Ferrari.”

    YES!!!
