Re: 2011 Porsche 991 spy pics... Fil de discussion fermé

I'm just not so sure that there will be many differentiating elements. Remember that Porsche said it would be evolutionary and not revolutionary. In Porsche speak that means: "Our designers are having an extended tea break and refuse to design any other elements besides the rear-lights and if we ask them really nicely , they will concede to drilling a few holes in the rear. In order to differentiate this car from a ordinary face lift , they have also conceded to making this car flatter and wider".

Wild-Sped this is fantastic work  Smiley   LED bars are my favorite .   I think that front lip should go a bit more down  (closer to the ground) and line on left corner (from LED to lip)  to be strait .

    Rossi,
sure we'll see changes all over the car! But I meant most revolutionary changes will most likely be found on the rear end.

    FFaust,
I agree the rendering still looks too much like the 997, Maybe I took the wrong angle for the picture?

Anyone have suggestions for more differentiating "elements" ??

    Excellent job Smiley

It would be really interesting to find out how the weight is distributed over various features: chassis, interior, luxury options, etc.
I think that a lot of weight is introduced by all those luxury items we as so used to nowadays: heated seats, bluetooth, iPod integration. But also by all the added safety enforced by EU and USA; airbags, bigger mirrors, etc.

luxury + safety = lots of weight Smiley

People often consider the safety aspect and the corresponding additional weight as something unnecessary and contrary to automotive purity. But if you see how even smaller cars stand up to severe accidents then you can see that it's all worth it.

Where do you prefer to have your high speed accident? In the "heavy" 997 Carrera or in the lightweight  1100kg "pure"  '80s Carrera?

    Well said. Smiley

    car - luxury + safety + high-tech = still way less weight.

Im not against safety, and i would rather be in a 997 when crashing. However, when having fun i'd rather by in a 80s 911.

I consider all the luxory options to be a unnecessary waste. Navs? A/C? power steering? power windows? sunroof? Make it ALL optional. But leave a base version completely bare. There's enough guys out there for such a car. I have been wanting a sort of stripped base carrera s (maybe GT4) without any options. No leather seats, little trim, just a wheel, 6speed and sports exhaust.

The only solution in your case is to get the car and strip it off yourself, because these things are demanded by consumers nowadays. If I 'm not mistaken even on models like GT3 that a/c, PCM, xenon etc can be deleted, the vast majority of buyers keep them on the cars and even demand more. Even minimalist Lotus has come up with most goodies in order to achieve their limited sales.

Re: 2011 Porsche 991 spy pics... Fil de discussion fermé

It's truly sad, i think the biggest thing is the daily driver phenomenon... But i can't blame people, it makes sense to be able to combine a sports/fun car with your DD.

You're right though, could buy a 964 and strip it. Still hope the 991 will be more "sporty"

What makes you favor the 80's?  The 69-73 911S had much less weight and more power in many cases (higher redline and better gearing in all cases).

So Autocar is now saying that...

"Sales will start in the Summer of 2012."

Wow.  So it'll be a 2013 model?!!!!  and it's still more than two years off?  So much for the predictions that it'll go on sale in a year or so....

That would also make the 997 one of the longest running 911 models in recent history, correct?

well i should've been more careful when picking a number, but i meant the past with my 80s reference. Actually a late 70s 911s is so much fun as long as it's not the 2.7L, i hear they had some problems... All time fav of course being the '72 Carrera RS.

Re: 2011 Porsche 991 spy pics... Fil de discussion fermé

If I didn't know any better - which I don't ;) - I would say that these videos are Porsche's effort at viral marketing. There just seems to be too much "cooperation" and not enough information (as in location) for these to be actual "spy" videos. I would also say this of most previously seen footage

    Interesting nonetheless

I'm just not so sure that there will be many differentiating elements. Remember that Porsche said it would be evolutionary and not revolutionary. In Porsche speak that means: "Our designers are having an extended tea break and refuse to design any other elements besides the rear-lights and if we ask them really nicely , they will concede to drilling a few holes in the rear. In order to differentiate this car from a ordinary face lift , they have also conceded to making this car flatter and wider".

    Agreed Smiley

So I guess that this could be a "face-lift" on the outside but a new model (991) on the inside Smiley
