Worst that could happen on a track day?

    Hello guys,

I am considering taking my 08 997 C2S to the track for the first time, since I am sure I am going to have an absolute blast, but lots of people are telling me that doing so will really hurt my car, that im gonna regret it blablabla. A German service advisor in my local Porsche Service Center told me, and I quote, "Your car will be completely destroyed".

What parts of the car could be effected on  5x 20 min sessions on a track? Bearing in mind its my first time, so I will have traction control on and will most likely not be pushing my car anywhere near its limits. I know that the tyres and the brake pads will probably get very worn out and will need replacing, but is there anything else that could potentially be under a lot of stress? My car is a tip so I dont have a clutch to worry about ;)

    Thanks for the info!

Re: Worst that could happen on a track day?

Your car won't be destroyed on the track unless you hit something. The tires and brakes will take a beating but you will have a lot of fun in the process!

They should fire this guy - never heard such a BS Smiley

FWIW: my Porsche Center invites me to the Nürburgring GP-track to have some fun Smiley

Other than burning rubber and eating some brake pads (wear depends on the track layout) your car should be fine after the trackday Smiley Just make sure that your brake pads are at least > 50% of the original thickness and that the discs and tires are o.k. and you'll have a blast Smiley

20 min. stints sounds reasonable also - don't forget warm up and cool down laps Smiley

Quote from W. Röhrl: if you want to convert a normal car into a race car, you have to change 80% of the parts - with a Porsche a change of 20% will do the job Smiley

    Have fun Smiley

PS: I take it that you will use only road legal tires (missing dry sump could cause probs in long/fast corners otherwise)

Re: Worst that could happen on a track day?

Always remember that there's an enormous difference between a "service advisor" and a "service tech"...

The mechanics working back in the shop, by and large, can tell you what's up and what to be careful of.

The "advisor" or "writer" that plays desk-jockey with the customers, in my numerous experiences with numerous makes and models, doesn't know squat about the inner-workings of an automobile...

It's like seeking medical advice from the receptionist at your doctor's office.

Go have fun, take it easy on your brakes (it's more fun exiting the corners hot than entering hot anyhow...), and go in fully knowing that you'll be taking some serious lifespan off your tires.

Whether you leave all the "nannies" on is your call.. They frustrate me to death quite honestly, it's like having your wife in the back seat nagging and screaming in fear and punching you in the shoulder at the slightest slip of a tire.

But then again, you want to drive away from the track in one piece, without a scratch, otherwise your "fun" is ruined.. So go with your gut, whether or not you feel you can keep yourself in-check and under-control on old-school settings, or whether you feel your nature to push necessitates activating the controls!

    Have fun!!

Re: Worst that could happen on a track day?

I have found that the car loosens up a bit and may develop some rattles after track events.

It is one way to quickly work out  "new car tightness".
