997 impressions from a Boxster driver - with pics

Took in the Boxster today to the OPC to get the 2100 rattle sorted and was supposed to get a Cayenne loan car. The Cayenne was out so guess what, got a 911 Carrera 2!!!

Now this is my first time EVER in a 911 with the engine on, let alone as driver and all I can say is what an amazing car.

The first impression I got was that it felt very big inside. Same seats, similar dash as the Box but just different here and there and maybe a bit better quality. Still some rattles though.

So, I get familar with the car. The steering is a noticeable difference, more direct and twitchier at speed than the Boxster. I felt the gearchange is what a gearchange should be, click, clunk, all six speeds! Although first is just as difficult to select as in the 5 speed box in my own car.

It took me a while to get used to the different weight distribution but at most speeds you can just hurtle though the bends with massive traction, although I haven't pushed it too hard with a massive insurance excess - the company almost had a fit when I told them the loan car was almost twice what my car cost!

The car looks great in Midnight Blue with the Blue interior. Sat Nav and phone are great, as is the Bose stereo which is much better than the one in the Boxster - I love how the seats vibrate to the music!!

The biggest diffference is obviously the power - the midrange is phenomenal. You place you foot to the floor and the needle swings round so quick. Press the PASM Sport button and things get more responsive. On smooth roads great but on bumpy roads a bit of a pane in my view. Xenons - I remember why I liked them on my Cooper S.

One thing has stood out so far - the numer of other drivers who seem to have a chip on their shoulder about the 911. I've never had this in the Boxster as far as I can remember but the 911 seems to bring out the muppets - maybe it's a full moon... Lots yesterday and this evening - almost like when you're driving an BMW M3 in my experience. Must just be idiots.

Anyway, great car but I find myself missing my Boxster. I can't explain it. It's got many less horses and torque, less toys, only 2 seats but i still miss it. Having said that though, the more I drive the 997, the more I like it.

Anyway, I get to keep the 997 'til Friday. Looks like it will be a fun few days.... ? ?

Here are some pics from today

    not too many rattles!

Odd. When I had a Boxter S loaner the other day the opposite happened to me. People were really aggressive, nobody would let me out of turnings and one guy in a modified Nissan even parked 10cm away from my drivers door so I couldn't get back in the car (in a completely empty car park!). This was just in 1 day.

As soon as I got back in my 911 everything went back to normal - people smiling at me, being courteous on the road, and also turning round on the street watching me go by (especially little kids, which I love seeing as that's exactly how I was when I saw a 911 at their age!)

Re: 997 impressions from a Boxster driver - with pics

hellgelb - must have been me

ajcastaneda - push for a 911! If you can pull a bird like that in your Boxster just think of the photos you could post with a 911

ResB - I sooooooo want one now !

    Matt C - yes I live in a park!

Dr Phil - Pm'd you. All 350D mounted on a tripod and with the wide angle lens, Sigma 10-20

It's another stunning day! Done 180 miles on twisties and in town since Tuesday eve!! Going to go out and do some more driving andd shooting now!

I can't see why not , just have to pay extra, in Australia it's a $3200USD option, and it's std on the S model.

Re: 997 impressions from a Boxster driver - with pics

I can't believe you got a courtesy car from the Edinburgh OPC. Last time my 997 was in I was directed to the trainhalt which they thought was nearby!
The car makes up for it though. Nice shots of the Queens Park.

Re: 997 impressions from a Boxster driver - with pics

Just about to post some pics - new thread required!!

Re: 997 impressions from a Boxster driver - with pics
