Just picked up my new baby from the factory!
I have not been an active poster, but I have been following this board for well over a year and have enjoyed all the picture, stories, and information. Thank you all for sharing.
Now I guess it's my time to contribute...I just picked up my Atlas Grey 911S from the factory on monday and it was unbelieveable...the entire trip was even better than I expected it to be.
Factory Tour: Started out with a factory tour around 1000. I was very impressed with the factory and the overall quality of it. I have seen a few other assembly lines (no automobile ones though) and the Porsche factory was by far the best I've seen. You get lot's of interesting bits of information like 89 of the 90 assembly stations are manual (the winshield installation is the only automated station), 150 cars produced a day, ALL cars built are special ordered, with the options there are over 1.6 billion possible variants, and on average only 5 of every 1000 911s are the same. Oh...and white seems to be the new popular color.
I also saw 2 new 997 Turbo's parked out in front of the new car delivery center...they both belonged to employees and one was a US spec Tiptronic. I wish I could have taken pictures...but they wouldn't let me. There were about 5 or 6 other Turbo's that had just been completed along with about 10 or so that were in the assembly line.
I highly recommend taking the factory tour. You need to see the quality that is put into these engineering masterpieces.
Delivery: The owner of the place I bought it from met me and after lunch on the top floor, he brought me over to the new car delivery center to pick up my new car. Excellent delivery process...there were 2 or 3 other people picking up their cars there but I was pleasantly suprised to get a bunch of little extras like a 911 key chain, nice floor mats, a few Porsche pins, a car cleaning kit, and a photographer who takes a high quality picture for you to take home. They went over the whole car with me inch by inch for about and hour before they cut me loose with it.
I drove it straight back to the UK (currently living here for another few months before I head back to the States). Amazing drive...in the 3 days I've owned it I've put on 700 miles and I'm sure I'll hit 1000 by the end of the weekend.
Impressions of the car: Better than I expected. The ride is amazing and the quality is incredible. I'm still figuring out all the PCM options...but I really can't wait to finish the break in period and really see what this thing has to offer.
Here's a couple pictures from the new car delivery center...sorry for the poor quality...I'll post some more once I finish breaking her in.
