    997 TT

    Acceleration from 200-300.

Manual is faster by a small margin, (Small, which requires perfect shifts I might add)

    Track driving.

Hockenheim-Weissach-short tracks with low topspeed: Tiptronic wins

Nurburgring-Manual wins by small margin in the hands of a Pro driver and a perfect lap. (That would exclude everyone here)

    Re: 997 TT

That's great... because we all know how often we will be driving between 200-300 kph on US freeways.

They've made a huge mistake with this tip crap. Tip is for an old man or a woman. It doesn't belong in a storied sports car, no matter how much of a GT it is becoming.

    Re: 997 TT

do you have any times for 200-300km/h?

Darius!!! buy the Tiptronic ! ahhaahhahahahhhaahahhaah!!!

in my opinion it's better 2 secs slow but the tiptronic in a sportly car is wrong !

Sergino,i will burn you and your 997 Gt3 on the Milano Bologna as soon as possible...
The Turbo is THE KING! remember!

I hope that does not surprise you

I repeat myself: the 997TT is a big disappointment.

BTW: The new issue of AMS contains a test of the Z06. Guess what: the Z06 (manual) is already 1 second faster than the 997TT up to 200kph. Of course, top-speed is also 10kph higher than in case of the 997TT...

I hope that as many as possible potential 997TT buyers realize what a mediocre package Porsche is offering Only stalling 997TT orders and sales could force Porsche to correct their wrong product strategy.

So if I were to drive a tip TT against Michael Schumacher in a manual TT. I would win. Right?

Not on a German Autobahn. Unfortunately, this is were I use my cars on a regular basis...

This is part I of the 997TT dilemma: Manual is quicker below 200kph, Tip is quicker above 200kph.

Part II of the dilemma is the unfavourable driving experience with gear trechnology of the 1990s (i.e. 5-gear Tip).

why don't you buy a corvette then?

and your "first dilemma" is wrong!

I am more likely to go for the new Ferrari 599GTB.

P.S.: I mixed up the words Tip and manual in "Dilemma 1"

You have an obvious knack for understatement.

    Re: 997 TT

I predict the 100kph and 200kph road test figures for each of the tip and manual will be .2 to .6 seconds better than the Porsche posted numbers.

This would be de rigeur for how Porsche sandbags their performance figures. I see it as a marketing strategy to give the car mags something to crow about after the initial crush of enthusiasts have washed through the ordering system, thus extending the buzz over the brand.

Did the manual equiped with LSD?

    Re: 997 TT

Here all the official spec. so far.

    0-60 MPH : 3.7/3.4 (Man/Tip)
    0-100 Km/h : 3.9/3.7 (Man/Tip)
    0-160 Km/h : 8.4/7.8 (Man/Tip)
    0-200 Km/h : 12.8/12.2 (Man/Tip)

    0-400 m : 11.8/11.6 (Man/Tip)

    80-120: 5th gear manual 3.8/3.5 sec (Standard/SCT)
    80-120: 4th gear Tip 3.5/3.3 sec (Standard/SCT)

    Top Speed : 310 Km/h (Man/Tip)

    And finally: Standing KM.

    0-1000 meters: 21.5 Manual
    0-1000 meters: 21.1 Tiptronic

All data without Sport Chrono Turbo (SCT)!!!

    Mike, I understand your frustration with him, but try to understand;
he doesn't like automatics, but that was never a problem, since the fastest offering from Porshe was a manual.
Now it's all changed. I'm almost as angry as he is. The 911 Turbo, the epitome of sports cars, is fater with a torque converter.
But here's another catch: should I decide to go for a Tip, I only have an advantage until 160 km/h and after that the 6-spd starts gaining and overtakes the Tip.
This IS a big deal for us, since we live in Europe, and use the cars in both settings, highway driving and twisty roads.
Also, why only offer the LSD on a manual, when the Tip is faster at speeds at which the LSD will be mostly used?
    That's something I don't get.

MKSGR: now, now. Relax. Breathe in deeply. Exhale. Think: "PDK. PDK. PDK. PSK..."

    Re: 997 TT

Would you be happier if they held back the tiptronic just to be slower than the manual?
Do you buy a turbo to enjoy driving it, or to be able to brag about being faster than the other guy?
The manual will be much faster than almost everything else out there, so if you're looking for driving pleasure, what's the problem?

Brunner, Porsche (deliberately or not) held back the manual.
Remember pre-boosting? AS it turns out, it's only used in the Tiptronic, but not in the manual. Also, it's not about bragging, it's about performance and enjoyment. But let's say that I sacrifice enjoyment for performance (after all, I COULD live with a Tip) and buy a Tip. The catch? The 6spd is faster ABOVE 200 km/h. So now I have to decide, what kind of car I want. That's what I don't like about the new car.
Now, PDK will in all probability solve this, with superior performance in all speed ranges, but it still leaves a bad aftertaste.

    Re: 997 TT

From 200-300 the manual is supposed to win by a VERY small margin, BUT only with perfect shifts!!!!

Standing KM: Tiptronic wins 21.1 vs 21.5 sec

    400 m - 1000 m: Tip gains another 0.2 sec

Terminal speed should be 280-290 km/h

    Re: 997 TT

    Thanks CF

can't wait to make a real test with the car under the seats!

Did it ever occur to the naysayers that the pre-boosting technique, as well as other engineering tricks, may not be even possible with a manual transmission?

I just can't understand the line of logic that says manuals MUST be faster than automatics because of torque converter losses. It sounds educated to say it, but it seems completely anti-intellectual to believe it.

Before one leaps to the conclusion that Porsche just didn't try hard enough during the design phase of the 997TT 6-speed, try to understand that real engineering sometimes operates outside the box of pseudo-scientific old-wives' tales about performance.

    Re: 997 TT

W8MM, Thank goodness some one like you is this board..., I am not crazy about owning a sportscar with an auto, but i am sure Porsche's R&D team did plenty of work to get this car where it is today. If TripS performes better I will probably go for it. I may just have to get used to thought of owning such a car. In the long run I am sure I will be very happy!!!

sorry RC but speed @1000m will be arround 250-255km/h and not 280-290. i just calculated it.

280km/h will be reached after 29,5s and after 1626m.

You shouldn't blame RC for my (CF) shortcomings in mathematics/physics.

You are right , terminal speed is probably 250-255 km/h.
Not that I know, I am completely lost in this department.

sorry, i mixed up all these short names... cf, rc, etc

just imagine, a ferrari enzo needs ~26s to get to 300km/h. just watch out for other cars to compare.

if anybody likes to know, the 997TT will take around 44s (+-2) for 0-300km/h. remember my words

    Re: 997 TT

Tip or manual, TT performance is tops.
Was bragging to a friend today about the TT specs. He is a anbsolute car nut who has driven and owned all types of sports cars.

His only comment was: Wow, impressive.....but why on earth didnt they go for the magic 500 ???

Isnt that what everybody is asking themselves ??

the 'summaryquote' in the ams test of today: 'Unglaublich, was hier fürs Geld geboten wird.Die Corvette Z06 kann sich nicht nur in den Fahrleistungen mit jedem Supersportwagen vergleichen. Für den Sportwagenfan ein Traum' !

..and btw you could still grin about the 50000 Euros left in the bank...

Mike, why not actuate pre-boosting by pressing the gas pedal down all the way and then engaging the clutch? Shouldn't be THAT much of a problem.

And, regarding engineering, I'd say I'm not totally off. After all, I own a Valentine One .
