    price of porsche remanufactured engine for 997 or 993?

    I am searching for your best estimate or quoted price from an an authorized porsche service shop on a complete remanufactured 911 or 993 engine/heads. Not a rebuild but a remanufactured engine.

    I know it varies depending on ??? but what is your estimate based on your experience.

    Wich model 911 or 993 engine? Original output or increased output? Original displacement or increased displacement? Want trick pistons and rods, a special crankshaft? Want the heads flowed? Bigger valves? What about cams? Original flywheel and clutch or a different spec one? Do you have a core to trade in? Need new headers/Tuned headers? Will you need the EFI rebuilt, Want 6 honkin throttle bodies and a crank fired igniotion system? new, modernized or rebuilt distributor? etc, how much power do you really want? Who do you want to assemble it and do a balance job on it all, a really talented crafstman or a ho hum line worker?

    So with all of that in mind...

    The best authorized Porsche engine rebuilding/remanufacturing facility in the US is Andial.

    Not only do they just rebuild engines. They also build the engines for Porsche Motorsports competition cars.

    Probably not exactly what you're loking for, but it might give you some info. I traded my 217'000km 996TT engine against a remanufactured (or rebuilt? what's the difference?) one for CHF 27k. Normal price would have been CHF 29k (USD 22k), but I got a small discount.

    If I remember correctly a "new" 997 engine is around us$15000

    Just FYI - 993 aircooled dry-sump motors can be rebuilt in the field by a large number of shops. Wet sump 996/997/986/987 motors have to be replaced by Porsche even for relatively minor events. However, buying a whole motor from Porsche for a 993 is WAY more expensive (3 or 4 times as much).

    The dry-sump 996 motors (GT2, GT3, and Turbo) are also really pricey like the 993 (same basic design).

    Around EUR 35-40k for a new 996 TT engine, yep.

    Grant,

    what are the specific reasons for the 996/997 Carrera engine not being able to be rebuilt? Apart from the engine block with wet (?) cylinderwalls I wouldn't know any reason for that based on my limited knowledge on that engine type.

    There are no reasons why the 996 style engines can't be rebuilt. For warranty claims it is cheaper for Porsche to have the engine rebuilt in Germany rather than pay USA dealer labor warranty rates (reduced from their normal outrageous rates but still bend-you-over expensive.) The real advantage is that PAG has some control over quality in the factory that they normally wouldn't have with an engine rebuilt in the field. Here is some pricing for remanufactured longblocks from Porsche (prices are in US dollars and do not include core charges).

    986 - $6963.57
    996 - $7951.74
    997 - $8561.44
    993 - $18196.14
    996TT - $20741.10 (short block)
    GT3 - $26531.50
    CGT - $79872.79

    For the 993/964 engines the prices have more than doubled since 2003 (was $7800USD).

    When my old 996 had its engine replaced, dealer told me it would have cost close to ~$15-17k if I wanted to buy it new. Thank goodness my warranty took care of it...
