Waiting list, thinking of dropping out

Decisions...dealer has asked for my 10k deposit, I could be in a turbo by early next year which is fine for my plans....but I really don't know which way to go?

It's interesting that dealer allocation is measured on received deposits, hence after not hearing a thing from PO for almost a year, on top of the normal lead up letters, I now have a letter from the MD asking me to pop in, also received telephone call from sales. Are people dropping out of the waiting list? Or am I just being cynical.

    My reasons for doubt:

I don't want to own an automatic sports car, but would love the sequential gearbox.
Dealer has no idea when this option will be available.

As already said a hundred times already; manual transmission is slower, which is my preferred choice (prior to paddle); theirs no way I would spend this sort of money on the slowest version....I'm also convinced there will be a big hit on depreciation once the paddle shift comes out.

Dealer used the F1 box in the 360 as an example that manual shift will not be effected by more depreciation; I mentioned the massive performance difference already between the boxes, which is unlike the F car but he had nothing conclusive to respond with.

The way I look at it, is I give up certain conveniences when buying a sports car (especially space for my golf clubs), so it massively important to me that my choice ticks the boxes it was purchased for.

Dealer quoted 7 .7 seconds for the trip and over 9 seconds for the manual to 100mph....this is way too much of a difference...PO have made IMO a massive cock up here.

The 10k is refundable, but there's a handling charge and loss of interest...I'm probably being a bit petty here.

I still love my existing C2S...just needs a touch more power and it's only one year old. When comparing the extra cash involved and that I'm clearly not getting what I want at this time, maybe I should wait a few years for the paddle shift?

Or should I buy a big specked 996 Turbo S? Seems great value at the moment and will get cheaper in the next few months. (I've never owned a turbo)

No test drives at dealerships...anyone who's paid the 10k gets a test drive, but not at the dealership.

Whilst typing this I've sort of answered my own question, I need to wait for a year or so, read some reviews (especially RC's) and then if it's right for me, buy the paddle shift.
By that time I'll be less indecisive about selling the C2S. So I'll put the 10K down and ask to wait for the paddle........sorry about this long post.

Re: Waiting list, thinking of dropping out

Tiptronic is 7.8 seconds from 0-100 mph, manual is 8.4 seconds as far as I remember. O-125 mph time is 12.2 seconds for the Tiptronic, 12.8 sec. for manual.

Before the factory summer vacation begins, only a couple of hundreds of cars will go to dealerships/customers worldwide. I heard something of around 500 cars total but of course this number is not an official number.
In the first year of production, availability of the 997 Turbo will be pretty limited due to high demand and limited production numbers.

Re: Waiting list, thinking of dropping out

in Italy it seems there will be 4 car for dealer till the end of the year..

mine is the second at my dealer...

Re: Waiting list, thinking of dropping out

It appears that you shouldn't be listening to the uninformed dealer.
I adamantly believe there will always be a place for a 6 speed. Highly doubt high depreciation.
As the editor stated; the official tmies are not that slow.
The Geneva pics are gorgeous. Classic artic silver and the lsd equipped 6 speed. Can't wait for mine.

I have no problem fitting two golf bags on the back seat of my 997S.

Re: Waiting list, thinking of dropping out

Allocation of pre Holiday break is very limited.
I received 997 Carrera S on launch date and a 997 Carrera S CAb on launch date respectively.

However my dealer told me we have to be VERY lucky to receive a launch 997 TT as country alloacations are extrmely limited.

Re: Waiting list, thinking of dropping out

My advice is to wait. Initially there may be limited allocations but Porsche will open the spigot before the end of the year. The value of the TT will drop and rather significantly.

Just look at the prices of the 997 and 997S in the US. On an another board Rennlist they are claiming the S is going for less than $70,000 with an MSRP of close to $90,000. This on a car less than a year old.

Also, by waiting you will get discounts off MSRP and the transmisssion you want.

Keep what you have, let the TT initial interest subside, and save yourself money.

Re: Waiting list, thinking of dropping out

of course, it's always nice to get the "newest new car"

but personally -- in this case -- i'd rather wait for the DSG-turbo

Nick, the 997 was released in spring 2004, so it is almost 2-year old now.

Re: Waiting list, thinking of dropping out

Yes, I know it's possible to fit a couple of sets on the backs seats but it's tricky not to mark the soft rear seat paint when lifting in and out. I prefer to use the front seat with a big soft towel protecting the leather and leave my clubs in my locker if it rains.

I'm never comfortable leaving my clubs in the car, which is something I have to do if I fancy a bite or a drink at a mates club.

We have quite a problem with club theft in the UK.

Re: Waiting list, thinking of dropping out

Discounts in the UK are highly unlikely though.

Since my earlier post I'm getting feed back that demand far exceeds supply, a friend of a friend wants my order.....now I'm thinking again, maybe I could take a car early next year and change up to a paddle when available, money should be safe. The jury is out again

I agree with you. I don't leave my clubs in my car like I use to when I drove a car with a real "trunk". So I only put my bag in the 997S when I know I'm going to play a round that day or go to the driving range. I once had to have my wife "deliver" my clubs to me because of a last minute decision to play.

Oh and don't forget that if you place your bag on the passenger seat, the bottom of the bag will rub against the glove compartment so put a nice towel around the the bottom of the bag. Otherwise, when you have to brake hard, you'll scuff the glove compartment door.

Regarding your decision, I would give them the deposit while you wait and hear more feedback, especially the car magazine test drives. You can always get your deposit back later. For me, I'm kind of glad I'm #14 on the waiting list. It gives me more time to wait. Maybe the Turbo S or powerkit will be available by then, with the sport exhaust option.

These could be my own words

My advice is: cancel the order, for such money you should be 100% satisfied with the car

P.S.: the fewer 997TT Porsche sells the more likely is a rapid intorduction of an acceptable package including powerkit and PDK... All potential 997TT buyers should cancel their orders. Let's wait for the final product or buy a different brand

Re: Waiting list, thinking of dropping out

In London (Chiswick, Berkeley Square), the waiting time for the Turbo is almost 2 years (if you were dumb enough, like me, to wait until now...)!!!!!!!! Drop out at your risk if you want the car...

    Porsche hates you
But seriously, I'm also waiting for Porsche to bring out some new stuff. I hope the Turbo S comes soon and especially hope that a powerkit is developed for it as well. In combination with PDK and a probably 550 HP in that configuration, it would really be a blast to drive (for everybody who are wondering where I'm going to use 550 HP, I'll just say that early mornings are perfect for totally deserted highway driving on excellent pavement, with long straights and some excellent corners ).

MKSGR, can you imagine a Turbo S, with powerkit and Sport chrono overboost?

It depends when the car was bought and not when it was introduced.

Two year wait for a TT in the UK? Sounds like hype to me. Given it is a mass produced car with a price tag of over $150,000 (assuming a modicum of options and add on taxes-one person estimated $180,000 for his spec car) I suspect some people will not see the value in the car solely based on perf. After all it looks like every other Porsche and to many a lot uglier.

Re: Waiting list, thinking of dropping out

I don't believe you're going to see very much of a discount on the tt for some time. I would personally estimate that they will be going for msrp (possibly higher) for eighteen to twenty-four months. Many of the waiting lists are too long, and likely (hopefully ) not readily found.
Regarding the falling prices of the 997S. The average 2005 997S is going for 10-14 percent less than msrp at a major eastcoast wholesale auction; Manheim. Some dealers may be selling at the huge discounts you say, but that's a major price cut.

Re: Waiting list, thinking of dropping out

    W-A-I-T.

    what to lose by waiting???

    Nick, are you kidding?
Just opened my Royal mail post and found these pics from PO.

I thought you might appreciate the beauty of the new Turbo...enjoy

Although I do agree with some (only some) of the contents of your earlier post.
