997 Turbo Tiptronic - Paddles Instead?

I am curious as to why Porsche hasn't made a simple change to thier Tiptronic set up from the +/- rocker buttons on the steering wheel to paddles behind the wheel. For the most part, the Tiptronic works very well with the Turbo cars and suits the power delivery. It seems that the current placement of the buttons is a bit akward. Paddles would be a bit more engaging IMHO. Would buyers be more likely to consider the Tiptronic option in the 997 Turbo with its quicker acceleration times if Porsche offered paddles?

Re: 997 Turbo Tiptronic - Paddles Instead?

Slightly OT but since Porsche now owns 20% of VW, I thought you might find this interesting. I also own a Touareg (the sister of the Cayenne). In Europe, paddle shifters are an option. A bunch of us here in the U.S. did the mod and installed the paddle shifters. They work unbelievably well. I don't see why Porsche couldn't do this.

Re: 997 Turbo Tiptronic - Paddles Instead?

But are the paddle shifters a more efficient way to shift? I am not trying to be a smart a**. I just wonder if having the + and - buttons on either side gives you better ability to up and down shift as apposed to having + on the right and - on the left and fixed to the steering column.

Re: 997 Turbo Tiptronic - Paddles Instead?

I too hope that Porsche will offer this option and I will definitely swap it in a heartbeat.
    Thanks for highlighting

In the case you cite, having a fixed button on each side of the steering wheel, you have to be a bit more precise. In certain situations, it's possible to get caught fumbling your thumbs, looking for the button.

Paddles seem to give a bit more room for error, whether they move with the steering wheel, or not.

I prefer paddles to the switches Mercedes puts on the back of the latest AMG cars. They are fairly easy to find, but paddles seem better when there is less reactionary time.

    I suppose it's a personal thing.

Re: 997 Turbo Tiptronic - Paddles Instead?

I think for intensive driving, fixed paddles are a far more rigorous and safe standard than those button thingies...

Re: 997 Turbo Tiptronic - Paddles Instead?

    these paddles look ugly.
the only nice paddles are from a bmw m5 or m6 with an illuminated "+" and "-". very cool!

Re: 997 Turbo Tiptronic - Paddles Instead?

Some cars have have padddles that turn with the steering wheel , others don't. OTOH, you shouldn't be changing gears in the middle of a turn where your steering wheel lock is such that you have to " hunt " for the paddle/buttons anyway !

The paddles on the Maserati Gransport looks great

The new Honda Civic 2.0-litre Sport model comes equipped with an automatic transmission feature F1-style steering-wheel-mounted gear shift paddles for enhanced driving response - another first for Civic.

What is the difference with the paddle shifts on the DB9 ?
