    Engine resonance at 2100-2300 rpm

    I notice this occasionally occurs at these rpms at any gear; other people have mentioned this in other threads. Is this normal? Does anyone else experience this and does it indicate a problem or just an annoyance? Easy to fix by dealer? Thanks in advance.
    BTW; absolutely loving my car so far!!

    Yes, I'm getting the same. 'Mooing' sound? I have a nasty suspicion that the dealer topped my oil up a little (didn't need it) when I got my tyres swapped before Christmas. It's now showing over-fill. Bit annoyed about that, but I've been driving on it anyway. Don't know if that could have caused the oil pump issue and noise mentioned in this thread.

    Anyone notice any correlation between a slight over-fill and the resonance noise starting?

    The oil overfill could also be faulty sensor. (?) Wish I had a proper dipstick!!

    My 986S had a problem with a valve in the fuel vapor recovery system that could be considered "mooing." I always called it howling.

    Does it happen at constant throttle openings and light engine load? Will it stop if you open or close the throttle significantly? If it does shut up, then you may have the dealer|OPC check for the vapor recovery valve problem.

    As it was explained to me, due to increasingly strict emissions requirements, the fumes from the empty part of the fuel tank are routed up to the engine to be burned. This fume consumption only happens when loads are light. At idle, it's not running fast enough to make use of it. At wide open throttle, you want 100% of the power available, so it's not reusing fumes. Only in a cruise situation will the valve open and it burn the fumes from the top of the fuel tank.

    It happens to me most noticably when in 2nd gear, light throttle, passing through 2000rpm, and again when no throttle and coasting back through 2000rpm as the revs drop again. (For example in stop-start traffic). I'll let you know what mine is when the OPC addresses it... when I have some spare time to book it in.

    I had it when approaching a traffic light for example and letting off the throttle in low/mid range revs. Brought it to the OPC and they found a pressure relief valve which was vibrating and thus causing a noise. Seems to be a known/common issue. Replacement of the valve (warranty) has stopped the noise.

    Don't think it's related to the oil fill status but I don't know what my bank account looks like either.

    Ente is correct - its a 60 minutes fix to replace the valve for one with a bigger ball bearing.
    Mine does this occassionally, but once over 55'C coolant temp it disappears - when cold I can get the noise to lasta few seconds by balancing the revs at 2100rpm

    Aha! That would also account for the knocking rattle from the rear of the car, and the cornering instability... I've accidentally got a cow shut in the boot!

    I called my service manager at the dealership and indeed this is a "known" problem in the 3.2 engine - it is the pressure relief valve that causes the intermittent vibration - easy to fix and he assured me that it is in no way a mechanical issue - if left will not harm the car in any way. I'll leave it for now and address it when I eventually take it in for service.

    Finally received a call from my dealer after "bugging" them in Sept 2005 about The 2100rpm rattle when cold. Called again in Dec sent E-mail late Jan. Each time told the had no knowledge of my problem.
    Finally contacted Porsche Commitment in Germany. They relied promptly saying local Porsche rep. would contact me. NO call.Dealer states they received a Tech. Note in late Jan. and I'm the only customer complaining of this rattle.
    Parts are on back order none in US. Expected parts late April. At least I will not have to awaken car while it is so cold.
