    987S with PASM

I'm getting ready to order my 987S and would like some feedback. For those of you who have PASM would you get it if you had to do it again? Also for those who've tried 18's with PASM and 19's with PASM. Was there a noticible difference in ride quality?

    Re: 987S with PASM

Hi turbokuo, I have a 987S with PASM. Prior to purchase I extensively drove versions with and without PASM. I can honestly say that PASM was a must have option for me. Especially with the 19 Carrera Classic wheels. The regular PASM setting is slightly softer and more compliant than the standard suspension, but still feel very sporty. The regular PASM setting is perfect for less than perfect roads and is also great for when your wife/gf is ridding in the car with you. The PASM sport setting just takes things to another level and is much firmer than the regular factory suspension. Perfect for the track/smooth roads, or when you really want to do some hard cornering.

The standard non-PASM suspension is good, but is not as firm the PASM sport setting a not as comfortable as the regular PASM setting. Also, I would not get the 19's if you are not getting PASM. Not really sure what it was, but the car I tested with 19's and the standard suspension just didn't feel right. Hope that helps.

    Re: 987S with PASM

I've gone through the same dilemma. You may look at the thread "Running in circles about wheels & suspension - Need help!" started on Nov 16, 2005 with lots of helpful advises and experience reports.
Though I cannot comment from own extensive experiences (baby ready for pick up in 4 weeks only) I've gone PASM + 19" in the end after some testrides. I'd say Blk 987S's comments mirror my own sentiments quite exactly, BUT as I think the most decisive factors are butt-feeling and local road-conditions I strongly recommend some extensive testdrives with either version. For example some people are of the opinion that PASM sport mode is far too harsh for their local road conditions, whereas I loved this set-up providing some race-car like drive feeling
    Good luck with your decision

    Re: 987S with PASM

Unfortunately my dealer didn't have a PASM equipped 987 for testing so I tried a 987S without PASM. It feels really compliant and at the same time quite sporty enough but I think the original setting can be set to a notch or 2 firmer so I am going for the PASM to get the best of both worlds. I am picking the original 18s coz want to keep the unsprung weight low. Cheers

    Re: 987S with PASM

I have 19'' Classics without PASM on (sometimes) bumpy UK back roads. Its perfect and much more 'organic' than computer controlled PASM.

Give me a real spring and tuned damper rather than a computer controlled one any day of the week. How the standard suspension rides is part of the cars character.

I certainly don't find it too bumpy and enjoy the ride at all times.

The purists go for -20mm and an LSD on the 997 thus binning PASM as it has a detrimental impact on the 'on the limit handling' character.

Also, and I can't back this up with personal experience, but quite a few users of the PASM have reported an unusual feeling from the back of the car during rapid diection changes on challenging surfaces.

Cheers and good luck with the decision.

    Re: 987S with PASM

I have 19" classics without PASM and the ride is fine... the only reason I would go for the PASM the next time around is that it lowers the car (I believe 10mm) and reduces the gap between the wheel well and the tire...

    Re: 987S with PASM

I have PASM+18" wheels and this combo is fantastic, on Sport Mode you have a go-kart.

But I think I'm getting used to it... You have to try both, preferably on long test drives.

    Re: 987S with PASM

I ordered 19s and no pasm, after whole day and 300 miles testign ademonstartor in Snowdonia on fast A and B roads. I was very happy with the ride and handling. then i rejected that car at delivery, and having to find another car quickly bought a near new with PASM. I barely use it on sport, its so hard the car jiggles about too much on normal roads. In sport it magnifies every road imperfection, even on newly laid dual cariageway, to the extent i find it uncomfortable after more than 10 minutes. IT might be fine for the track, but no use for my local roads, however good some of them are surface wise. I would even go as far as to say that at times its so uncomproimisinmg that it reduces grip and traction when pushing on along B roads.

The only plus point i have for PASM is that the ride may be slightly softer on normal settings than the std spring/damper set-up.

spec it again ? - No way, just not worth the Pounds1k.

The other consideration is the cost of replacement shocks - 4-5 years down the line they will need replacing ang i expect units to be 5 times the cost of the standard dampers.

Have you tried PASM with 19's? If so what was the difference.

    Re: 987S with PASM

My 987S has PASM and Sport Chrono. When left in "normal" if offers an amenable sporting ride, muting all but the harshest road irregularities. When both are engaged in "sport mode", you feel the car is on rails and has become electric, as if somehow you are grabbing a high voltage wire. You feel compelled to continuously rip off red line shifts in bursts of five, to borrow a phrase from one writer. Not that the non PASM/Sport Chrono Boxster is a slouch, but the difference is striking It's like having two cars for the price of one.

All the best reasons for PASM have been stated above: 10mm lowering to take care of the fender gap, softer more compliant ride for boulevard touring, instant conversion to a taut gripping suspension that exhibits nearly imperceptible body lean around the tightest twisties. As I do not track my car I do not know if the suspension is stiff enough for diehard track guys.

Arguably, these are the best two options to buy. Should I graduate to a Carrera, it too will have PASM and Sport Chrono.

I've tried a Cayman S without PASM and 19, and I felt it a little softer and with body-roll. there is a huge difference between normal and sport mode

    Re: 987S with PASM

PASM is a must-have for me. In sport mode it is too harsh for just cruising around, but when it comes time to hit the sweepers or any fun roads of any sort, sport more is fantastic.

The car handles well in normal mode too, and from what I've been told it is a more plush ride than the non-PASM cars, but then I haven't had that much seat time in a non-PASM-equipped Boxster so maybe I'm not a good comparison for you.

Before I specified my 987 I tried the 997 with and without PASM. I found the 997S with 19" wheels and PASM a far more comfortable (but not soft) ride than the standard 997 on 18" wheels without PASM. On this basis, I specified it on my Boxster and I have not been disappointed. It is probably one of the most comfortable long distance cars I've ever owned. PASM is the best of both worlds, firm but comfortable with no roll in cornering or dive under braking. Sport mode is too harsh for normal use, but to be fair Porsche do say it is mainly for track use. Go for it.

    Re: 987S with PASM

I'm torn on the issue, having 19" wheels with PASM and sports chrono myself. At this point in time, I would probably skip PASM in my option list for a new 987S and if it's only for the sake of variety because I have no experience base to compare my setting to. The normal PASM mode feels too soft for all but a London back road commute and the sports is too rough for all but spirited track or scenic driving (which doesn't happen on so often considering the Boxster is my daily driver). I'd hope for the non-PASM suspension to settle somewhere inbetween, which sounds just about right for my taste.

I AM fond of the lowered chassis though...

    Re: 987S with PASM

without pasm ... dont like electronics will cause you problems in the future

    Re: 987S with PASM

I gave two people test rides on the weekend in mine with PASM and 19s. Both asked for it to be turned off within minutes (one of them on UK Motorway at the time !!)

Its fine for the track, no use on UK roads

    Re: 987S with PASM

Actually, I find sport mode better on narrow country roads than motorways. You EXPECT to be jiggled then and it makes the car seem more stable. But admittedly only when you're in the mood to drive spiritedly. On flat roads, it just seems to highlight the bumps, I agree!
