There's been a comparison in the Dec 2005 EVO magazine. I believe the findings were something akin to:
- BP Ultimate (97+ ron) has more low and mid range torque power
- Shell Optimax (98 ron) feels crisper at the edge
- Forget about supermarket fuels because you never know what you get
- Stick with the high octane / "clean" brand stuff.

I've used both BP Ultimate and Shell Optimax. I find Ultimate's claims a little too optimistic (has had no improvement whatsoever in economy) and no difference in power. I use Optimax and find a slight difference in both areas, however not enough to justify the difference in price.
To be honest, I don't use them for their claims - only for the benefit of the engine itself.

Don't know about down south, but Shell stations are far more common than BP around here. Between that and my wife's discovery of the fuel filler cap, I haven't had a chance to try Ultimate since I read the comparison. Can't honestly say I feel a difference with Optimax - but I believe the suggestion in the EVO article was that you should try to use it (or something similar) every few tankfuls for the detergent benefits.

I tend to use Optimax out of habit. I tried BP Ultimate, but the station that does it charges about 6p more per litre more. I didn't immediately notice the difference to be honest. This was at a time when Optimax supply was cut off, due to the fuel depot fire - I also tried Tesco 99RON - cheap, but didn't seem as wonderful as the rating would suggest.
So I've gone back to Optimax for cost/availability. Some fills are better than others (Fuel freshness issue, noted by EVO?), but it's at the higher revs it seems to make most difference. Wasn't bowled over by the Ultimate, but maybe it was an un-fresh fill - due to the cost, I didn't try again.

Did you guys watch 5th Gear on tv? they took 3 different cars Renault Clio, VW Golf GTI and Subaru STI and dynoed 3 cars with 3 different petrol type, 1. Supermarket stuff, 2. BP Ultimate 3. Shell Optimax... With the Clio there was no significant difference, but with the GTI and to a much greater margin STI, there were actually power gains at the wheel with the Optimax.... so looks like Optimax IS woth the difference.
