The Aston AMV8 looks dodgy when it comes to both performance and reliability.

Its no quicker and no better handling than a Roush supercharged V8 Mustang and is probably slower on top speed.

Any Aston Martin with a 165mph speed limiter, like the AMV8 has, is no choice of mine.

I really don't know where you are getting your info from? THe AMv8 doesn't have a speed limiter, and it's top speed is 175mph, which is the speed i assume you cruise at regularly!

Excuse please, A 175mph limiter. Yes, AM does have a limiter on the AMV8. It has been mentioned in the British auto press several times.

That depends on the person. The AMV8 has going for it its looks and exclusivety, but more factors affect the heart such as heritage, prestige, performance benchmark, a timeless recognisable silouette and history that spans generations, icon status, etc, etc. and the AMV8 has nothing in those categoris compared to the 911.

For those of us that loved sportcars since a very young age, you look at the Aston and you say..."what a beautiful sportcar", you look at the 911 and you say... "thats a 911". So for some people a 911 may move the heart much more as well.

    Depends, to each his own

Very well said, Carlos. 911 has always been in my heart since a very young age. It is the icon sport car for me.

When I think of Aston, I think of James Bond. So I will only get an Aston if it comes with the real missiles.

That's odd! as there was an interview with the chief engineer on the nurburgring which categorically stated that the v8 didn't have a speed limiter...

I beg to differ here Carlos, the AM marque has an equally rich if somewhat chaotic history.

    AM history

    Re: C&D 997S vs. AMV8

Stanwan, I know the db8 volante has one, but the AMV8 has one as well. Sorry to say, but I read it in Evo and was repelled by the thought of any Aston having a top speed limiter. I trust Evo was credible about it.

I think Evo made a mistake there... I know the video is a bit long but it comes straight from the horses mouth...

    V8 Video

For a "slow" car, the AMV8 puts in good N'Ring time, with/without the hallowed Corsa tires... Maybe it actually does handle?

    Re: C&D 997S vs. AMV8

I thouhgt it was unfair for the Aston to win when the Porsche so handily beat it in all performance categories.

No, no lets be serious. Aston Martin is nothing compared to Porsche's presense and acomplishments in sportcar automovitive history. Porsches heritage, motor racing feats and tradition, its street sportcar successes, its evolution over the years, etc. cannot be compared to the lesser Aston Martin. Even amongst British sportcar brands, Aston Martin is not a leading one history and merit wise. Lotus, Jaguar, or Bentley to name a few deserve have a richer and heropic racing and streetcar history.
And the differences become even bigger when we compare the AMV8 vs 911 which my original statement was about (I did not say AM vs Porsche in general). The AMV8 simply has no history, street nor racing, no following, no merits yet (simply because its a new car). The 911... well its the "Porsche 911", no current sportcar model car can compare in terms of heritage, merits and history to the 911.

Yes the current Amv8 is based on a new platform, but the Vantage has been around for quite a while.

Where is Le Chef? Maybe he can provide some balanced opinions?

    Re: C&D 997S vs. AMV8

Actually, I believe the AMV8's platfrom is derived from the DB9's V-H aluminum platform, and its engine from the Jaguar's V8.

Yup that is what I meant, VH platform cars. I Believe previous AMV8s existed prior to this, and also a brutally fast supercharged vantage in the interim.

The Engine starts with Jaguar block, everything is custom machined and built. I recall that the porsche watercooled flat-6 is also subject to such sharing through the range?

    That is correct.

    Re: C&D 997S vs. AMV8

I have read extensively on the AMV8 and never saw anywhere that the speed was limited. The DB9 Volante, on the other hand, does have a speed limiter because of its fabric roof. The AMV8 engine is a completely reworked Jaguar V8, the only component that was retained is the engine block. It is built in the Aston facility in Cologne , Germany. The transmission is fron Graziano in Italy.

Indeed, same thing with the Carrera engine and the Cayman/Boxster's.
