Think twice about SS door sills: scratched=toast

Well, it happened. Gotta nice scratch on the passenger's stainless steel door sill. There's no way to remove it; grinding it down and then matching the luster has got to be impossible in the extremely difficult-to-machine material (especially with the etched "CarrerraS" logo).

    Shudda clear bra-ed it.

LOL. yeah..., you're right. BTW, it's funny because I believe the sills are there to protect the door sills.

Then again, bad design/materials if they can't be repaired/cleaned up. Brushed, lusterous SS has got to be the WORST application because it's impossible to fix. Then again, kitchens loaded with well-used scratched SS look pretty good, don't they? AWGGGH!

Re: Think twice about SS door sills: scratched=toast

I'd bet a light brushing of a certain weight of sand paper would blend it. It's got a brushed finish to it so something has to work.

i like the clear bra idea. crg

You'd probably have better luck final block sanding in one long continuous stroke the whole thing with the same material to achieve evenness. Then the "Carrera " lettering might be altered. Would be a "pissa" (i.e. Boston street slang) to do right.

Re: Think twice about SS door sills: scratched=toast

Thanks for the post. I'll make sure that I use a 3M film to protect it.

Re: Think twice about SS door sills: scratched=toast

    MMD,

I'm not sure who told you SS was hard to machine, but it isn't particularly problematic....after aluminum, 410 stainless is one of the easiest...step up to titanium, and things get more tricky due to work hardening and any super alloy with a high nickel content can't be conventially machined and is instead either ground, ECM'd or EDM'd.
Regarding your SS scuff plates...you shouldn't have too many problems refinishing them (I'm presuming you can't feel the scratch with your fingernail)...The plates are finished with a 'long grain' pattern which allows for re-dressing, as Srfcity said you'll need find the correct grade of sanding block, put some masking tape over the lettering and use straight continous strokes....do not rub against the grain

Re: Think twice about SS door sills: scratched=toast

I had the same problem, when Sam and Wilson from Premier installed the clear bra on the front end, they also covered the sills, in the process some of the scratches are now nearly invisable.

Re: Think twice about SS door sills: scratched=toast

since SS scratches easily. would illuminated carbon fiber sills look silly on a black interior car that has no other carbon fiber parts?

Re: Think twice about SS door sills: scratched=toast

If I remember correctly, I received a couple of little patches (fine sand paper) from my dealer when I picked up the car. These "came with" the upgraded sills. It was meant to buff up the ss sills (only tiny scratches, however) -but I haven't used it yet.
    Did you receive these?

Re: Think twice about SS door sills: scratched=toast

The finish Porsche chose for the door sill plates was a 'long grain' or 'angel hair' finish...this means the grain runs the length of the sills, it also means that it is easy to refinish the sills if you get scratches......( I'm surprised that appliance manufacturers don't use this finish, because the ones they tend to choose are almost impossible to fix), Don't bother with the patch of 'sand paper' Porsche supplied...it's not big enough and is very hard to get straight/consistent pressure with it.

3M to the rescue....here's a pdf on the pads to use...

Sounds good Jfraser. I assumed ours cars' was like what must have been "appliance finish" with which I had some disappointing amateur repair experience a while ago. thanks.

Hummm..., and I thought that cover-all-chairs-in-plastic tactic was used to discourage grandpa from going shirtless in the house.

Re: Think twice about SS door sills: scratched=toast

Just read the TSB for the installation of the illuminated SS door sills. It mentions that an abrasive pad is supplied with them to remove small scratches.

MMD, you might want to ask your dealer for such a pad?
