C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

I was not gonna bring this up, but i read the comparison test about a week ago and theres something that bugs me about it.
When i ordered my 997s i had the choice between the two, i picked the 997 cause it was the better car.
I don't mind at all that AM was rated the better car, but there is one category which bugs me.....

    handling AM 10/10 997s 8/10
    ride AM 8/10 997s 7/10

Whats that all about, i though the strong point of the 997 was it is the best drive in the price range?

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

You are right and you picked the right car. Congrats! 997 is a better handling car than AMV8.

The C&D author was heavy biased towards AMV8 due to its look, interior and being "exotic". He basically ignore all the hard data from the comparison test and picked his biased car to be the winner.

By the way, Autocar magazine picked our 997 to be 2005 driver car of the year regardless of purchase price, beating F430, AMV8, Ford GT and M5. I hope that will make you happy...

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

Not sure if it's been mentioned elsewhere so forgive me if I am repeating info, but track down a copy of the "Top Gear" test of the DB8 versus M6 versus 911 S. Real world test, real world street. In a nutshell, in a very short course (under 1.5 minute lap), the 911 S is SIX SECONDS faster than either of the other cars. Telling, don't you think?

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

Zack... If you were looking for the best, you found it
    Congrats

Even before The Stig drove the cars, 2 to 1 liked the 997S better than the M6 or AMV8. (driving in dry and wet conditions on curvy mtn roads) The video is well worth watching.

The "biblically fast" M6 can't touch the "hard to describe... real living thing" 997S.

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

    Targa Tim,

How do you know the 997S is a better handling car that the V8? Have you driven both? The writer of the article in question might be biased (as you suggest) or maybe he wasn't. One thing I know for sure: he has at least had the opportunity to drive both cars so I'll put greater weight in his opinion than I would the opinion of someone imagining what a particular car is like to drive based on extensive magazine reading. I can honestly say I don't know which car handles better as I haven't driven both.

The Top Gear test is getting a lot of play. I heard somewhere that the driver involved has extensive racing experience with the 911. If this is true (I don't know that it is), surely familiarity with a car is good for a few seconds in wet conditions over cars you might just have sat down in for the first time.

As always, a reminder that there are many reasons to buy one particular vehicle over another and that one size does not fit all. You must know zack in Dubai very well in order to assure him he made the "right" choice.

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

    Friscorays,

My bad...I shouldn't say that without a test drive.

However, I don't need to know Zack at all to reassure him about his choice. I own a 997S and I will highly recommend it to anyone, and I don't need to test drive all the cars in the city before making a recommendation.

You don't need to test drive all the cars in the city, but maybe you should test drive the cars that might be BETTER!!! Keep an open mind folks, it is the only way to gain knowledge

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

First, look at the numbers. Just impirical data, no subjective comments. The 911 is better in every category.

Second, test driver familiarity has nothing to do with lap times. Look back at '03 when Jeff Gordon and Juan Pablo Montoya switched cars. In Gordon's second lap around a course he had never run before in his life, in Montoya's car, he ripped off a lap just 1.3 seconds slower than Montoya's best lap of the day in the same car.

The DB8 is a nice GT car, but a sports car of the caliber of the 911 it is not. If you want drop dead sexy looks, the smell of nice leather and whatnot, the Aston is your choice. But the 911 is the last honest sports car in the segment.

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

I have driven both on some winding country back roads, and came to the conclusion that they are both equally matched, at least to my humble ability. All these fancy numbers don't make you a better driver, and it takes a truly skilled driver to master either of these cars. So unless one is at that level of skill, then lap times are pretty meaningless: a bit like claiming that I can run like Michael Johnson if I was given his sneakers...

Didn't the TG 911 come equipped with LSD/SportSuspension/Ceramics? In fact I remember seeing a written TG article claiming that the AMv8 held up well against the 911 on the Ring?

I'm pretty sure that AM is going offer some kind of handling pack for the V8 in the future. After all, Ulrich Bez did work for Porsche too...

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

Vantage V8 achived 8.03min time on Nordschleife with Pirelli Corsa semi-slicks. 997S coupe(PCCB,-20mm/LSD) time was 8.05min with normal Michelin tires. If you fit Corsa's on 997S it will be around 4-5s faster on Nordchleife. With normal tires(Bridgestone) V8 Vantage time is around 8.10min, AM is still not offering semi-slicks as option...
BTW, these times were achived by Horst v. Saurma-german Sport Auto magazine.

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

I drived the new db9 of a friend of mine. No comparision with the 997s!!! The db9 is a beautyful car but also strongly disappointing in overall "feeling", handling and driving, and is, imho, not even a real sport car!
    ciao

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

    Alexis,

Good point. However, the DB9 is meant to be a Grand Tourer and not a real sports car. This discussion is about the V8 Vantage which is Aston's offering in the sports car segment.

    as far as i know ,c2s with -20/lsd achieved 7.56 , no?

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

7.56?? Are you crazy!? 8.05min is excellent time!
BTW, 7.56min is 996 Turbo time-again Sport Auto Supertest and Horst von Saurma...

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

    Branimir,

997S Coupe with -20mm & LSD did the Nordschleiffe in 7:59.

    997S PASM Sport mode: 8.02
    997S PASM Normal mode 8.05
    997 8.15

The Top Gear test was on the Isle of Man. It was AMV8 vs M6 vs 997S Coupe with -20mm & LSD & PCCB. Conditions were extremely wet and windy for all 3 cars.

    Approx times:

    AMV8: 1 min 35 secs
    M6: 1 min 35 secs
    997S: 1 min 29 secs.

Over a short track, the 997S was 6 seconds faster than the other two. This was when the Stig drove all 3 cars.

Richard Hammond and James May both voted for the 997S as the best car of the three. Only Jeremy Clarkson voted for the M6. None of them voted for the AMV8.

Richard Hammond subsequently bought a 997S. James May ordered a Boxster S. Jeremy Clarkson owns a Ford GT and a Mercedes Benz SLK55 AMG.

Hammond's comments were that the 997 was just "perfect". May said it was now "understated" compared to other cars which are more bling. Only Jeremy Clarkson said that he wouldn't buy a Porsche because of the kind of people who buy them. An entirely vacuous point to make given that he voted for the M6 when BMW M cars attract more 'unsavoury' types than do Porsches.

All three of the reviewers said they felt disappointed with the performance of the AMV8. It sounds magnificent but therein lies the problem. The sound makes you expect much bigger performance so it disappoints.

These are just the things I remember from that review. Well worth a look if you can find it on the net!

Remember the -20mm sports suspension is a No Cost option on the 997S and the PCCB costs Pounds5349 so even adding this to the Pounds65860 basic price of a 997S, it it still about Pounds9000 cheaper than an AMV8 so the comparison is only fair!

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

7.59min on Nordschleife?? Who was driving?? W.Rohrl??
8.05min is time achived by Horst v. Saurma in Sport Auto Super Test(issue 5/2005).
Even RC will confirm that Sport Auto Super Test time is very reliable one!
Top Gear? I have that video and even more impressive thing is that road was wet! That 997S was with PCCBs and -20mm/LSD.
BTW, I like german Sport Auto more then EVO or Top Gear...

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

Yes Branimir, 7.59 was Walter Rohrl.
    Take care my friend...

Re: C&D AMv997s. One thing that really bugs me......

That Top Gear episode was very entertaining (as always).
For anyone interested, the entire episode can be found here: AMV8 vs. M6 vs. 997S and also features a test of the Ascari.

Both cars are fantastic, and I don't think you can make a wrong decision when choosing between them.

I think a pivotal point in that episode was when one of them said "What should we expect the AM to do next?" And they all said, in unison, "Break down"

It reminds me of the time when an AM Sales Director had slightly over indulged at a raceourse luncheon. When I asked him which was the better car - AM or Porsche, he replied " If you don't want a car that breaks down every 10 minutes, get the Porsche!"

Must be some truth in it.
