Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

    Hey Guys,

I am in socal and was looking at new tires for new rims on my 997s cab. Shop recommended the TOYOs, said they were much cheaper in the fronts (although close in price to the Conts and Pirellis) in the rear.

Shop did not like Continentals and thought Michelins were overpriced and Pirellis made too much Hum.

    Any educated opinions out there?

Re: Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

Toyos are not porsche approved (N rated)

Pirellis are a little noisy and can tramline, but are more progressive at the limit. Michelin are generally preferred over Contis.

Pirelli or Michelin then dependent upon cost

Toyo are top of the budget ladder. But I wouldn't stick em on my 997. Also, I have had quality issues with them (like chunks of tread falling off!)

Conti don't make a good dry weather tyre (In my humble opinion). But make great wet stuff.

Michelin and Pirelli are not that far apart. The Pzero has always been considered one of the better tyres. But on here Michelins seem to be favoured by most. Personally I will stick either of the two on my car. Most likely I will renew with whatever it comes with as standard! (unless it is conti's that is!!)

Re: Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

I don't have my 997 yet, but I'm also from SoCal and have 19" Michelins on my M3 and E55 - and had them on my M5. I do not like the PZero's: as you noted, they are nosiy very early on and aren't that much less expensive than the PS2s. I think the Michelin PS2 are the way to go, and hope like hell my car comes with them on the XRR wheels instead of the Pirellis.

Re: Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

Michelin Pilots are the better all round tyres.

They also give you better mileage it seems.

Have the same opinion - nonetheless if you pay that amount of money for a sportscar you should get the appropriate tires. So I would stick to the N-rated Michelins!

Bear in mind that the tires change the comfort and handling characteristics on your car to quite an amount, the Contis seem to be more comfort-orientated but might cause the car to understeer!

    Quite agree.

I was referring to the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 which are N-Rated

Re: Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

Thanks guys. Need new tires cause the new rims are wider in the back. My "old" tires only have 700 miles on them. Brand new Sport Design rims too. Will either stack in the garage or try to sell online. (no dings or nicks)

Re: Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

Michelin tires OEM and Champion monolite wheels. (18-20 lbs.)

umm HELLO?? Bridgestone S-03's for me please...

    Scrap all those other tires.....

Re: Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

I was reading the German forum the other day, a post on there said that Conti tyres understeer the most, then Michelin, then Bridgestone and Pirelli underesteer the least.

This was according to the Porsche guy leading the chassis development and based on a C4S with summer tyres.

Don't know whether it will be applicable directly to a C2S

Re: Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

I wish to change my reply..

Having just been to see my car today and seeing that it has Pzero's on it I now have to say that Pirelli's are best. (Easily led me? Nooo!)

Pirelli write Pzero in red on the tyre. On my reg car that looks cool. Michelin just don't do that. So shut case. Pirelli wins.

    Thankyou...

Re: Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

I've got Pirellis on my 997scab, and they are quite quiet. Bear in mind i've only done around 3,000 miles ,but i've driven them hard (no breakin pussy-footing around). They handle great though, and if they last (which i doubt) i'll get them again, otherwise pilot sport 2 it is

Re: Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

Having had the car for a few days now, I have to agree with Madadd...the Pzero is in red letters. Obviously, a clear indication of a superior tire. Also, I have Michelins on my MG...and my Porsche is way faster than my MG, because of the tires. Your choice is obvious.

Re: Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

can I see some pictures of this red lettering???

Re: Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

The red lettering is gone from one of my tires so now I don't drive past 50mph until I get new tires!

I've got Continentals on my 911S, and they are really noisy. It sounds like I've got an open window. Also, the car seems to "squirm" a bit on the road. I wonder if it's related to the tread pattern. Could that be why they apparently lead to greater understeer?

I'm certainly going to switch when these wear out, and I've only put about 340 miles on the car.

Re: Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

Yup, sure looks like red letters to me.

Re: Toyo vs. Michelin vs. Continental vs. Pirelli

Does the red lettering come off?
