    Ferraris 2004 GT-racer 360GTC launched

Ferrari introduced a race version of the Challenge Stradale to counter the threat posed by Porsche's new 996GT3 RSR in GT racing for the 2004 GT season.

More pictures and the whole story at Ferrari Owners' Club (UK)

    Re: Ferraris 2004 GT-racer 360GTC launched

Looks great! Interesting that they do not use the carbon-ceramic brakes on this version (but they do on the street version). This is either because the GT class rules do not allow them or they perform worse than steel, or both...

    Re: Ferraris 2004 GT-racer 360GTC launched

I doubt that a lack of performance is the reason for the lack of carbon-ceramic brakes. Perhaps the carbon-ceramics are less realiable under race-conditions, or that they are simple too expensive (Ferrari's GT program doesn't have virtually unlimited funds like the F1 team)

Don't think it's a matter of money. Could it be a problem of durability, especially the brake pads? E.g. the old Challenge never had drilled brakes as the standard car, because the holes in the brake disc would ruin the pads very quickly.

The FIA rules for GT racing specify brakes are to be of ferrous material

Do you know why that is?

    Re: Ferraris 2004 GT-racer 360GTC launched

I expect it's to keep it more affordable for the teams.

    Re: Ferraris 2004 GT-racer 360GTC launched

Its ostensibly for cost reasons. The current GT regs are drawn
    from the old GT2 category.

Does anybody know how the carbon-ceramic brakes that are used on the Challenge Stradale would perform against those huge steel brakes of the 360 GTC, concerning braking power, durability and costs? Just curious.

    Re: Ferraris 2004 GT-racer 360GTC launched

Problem with ceramic brakes is chipstones, they destroy ceramic brakes very quickly and that's what surrounds circuits when you miss a turn (chipstones) hence Ferrari nor Porsche use them for competition, all Carrera Cup cars have steal brakes. Stradale ceramic brakes and PCCB are great for street use, not for track.

Thanks. That's what I've heard before. Yes, durability is better. And yes, there is a weight saving of the unsprung masses.

But tell me, when you install a massive steel disc, with, let's say 350 to 380 mm diameter, six piston calipers, is the ceramic brake really superior? And if you would use such a massive steel brake, would it still be cheaper than the ceramic one? Is the ceramic brake really that much better on the street than a good steel break as the high price suggests? Is it all for marketing reasons or do you think, that in the future the ceramic brake will become as popular as let's say the ABS-system today?

As far as I can remember, none of the leading car magazines I have read so far seem to confirm, that the ceramic brakes are worth THAT money (I don't mean THE money ).

    Re: Ferraris 2004 GT-racer 360GTC launched

I don't know, the info I got about PCCB comes from my friend and driving instuctor Jean-Marc Bachelier who competes in french championship GTFFSSA with a 996 GT3 and who is also the official instuctor of the Club Porsche de France.
I will see him soon and ask him.
I drove a GT2 a while back with PCCB, they were a bit noisy but stopping power was humongous, much more than my Carrera (well, you'd think so! ) and I also liked the fact the pedal was very hard, takes a while to dose your foot, but the brakes felt good.
I'll come back to you about the PCCB for street use vs bigger steel brakes.
    Fanch.

the 380 mm disks are at least as good as the PCCB.
it surely depends on the pads you use, but this brake BRAKES, believe me.

if you want to put it on your car: in 2001 the brake of the '98 993 GT2 CS (380mm discs, pads and calipers) were Euro 4.500,--.

I thought so. And the prices are about half as much as Ferrari/Porsche demands for their composite brakes. So it's all about marketing and earning money, too much money for what you get...
