This is my favourite pic (so far).

So what do you say, guys? Thumbs up or thumbs down?

    Overall, thumbs up.

    Only caveats are:
    1. Faster Tip times still make me suspect Porsche is under-tuning the manual for reliability reasons, but I will await a PDK versus manual before buying-presumably if the PDK is even faster than Tip, then I would go with PDK-remember, I have a tuned 996TTS-but others can't go wrong with even a manual base 997TT.
    2. Aesthetically, I like it, except for the rims-still want to see the PCNA order guide for possible factory rim options.
    3. Now it's a matter of timing the TCab release.

    Let the internet banter proceed.

The only problem I have with all of this is: how can a 5-speed Tiptronic be faster than a 6-speed manual? And not just from 0-100 km/h, but also from 100-200 km/h?

the answer is quite simple: röhrl is getting older...

Don't let him hear you. Grandpa may be old, but he's still 6'7"

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

    RC,
Do you know the weight of the car?
    Thanks.

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

    1585 KG

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

    Fanch, 1585kg for manual! 3.3kg/hp!

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

Auto is 80kg heavier I guess...

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

    Tiptronic 35 KG more.

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

The vehicle's flexibility can be enhanced even further with the optional "Sport Chrono Package Turbo", available for the first time. Here the driver selects the "sports button" adjacent to the gear lever to activate a short-time "overboost" at full throttle. This increases boost pressure in the mid speed range by 0.2 bar for up to ten seconds; torque rises by 60 to 680 Newtonmeters. The time required by the 911 Turbo with manual transmission for intermediate acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h is reduced by 0.3 seconds to 3.5 seconds.

From 3.8 seconds without Sport Chrono Turbo.
Improvements in acceleration times with both manual and Tiptronic should therefore be expected with the Sport Chrono Turbo

    Thanks.
    Bit heavy for track work.
By track work, I don't mean a lap of Nuburgring small or long boucle, I mean a proper track day, like 100 km of tracking.
PCCB de rigueur for those interested I would say.
    And tyres, lots of tyres!

    I hear you.
    But 3.30 kg/hp for the Turbo, and 3.36 kg/hp for the GT3!!!

    One's 1.6 Tons, the other 1.4 tons!

The two cars are very comparable propositions in terms of what you want to do, which is a good thing obviously.

997S is not a slouch either at 3.67 (Yes I admit, different league, but I need to make myself feel better )

    F430 at 2.87

These figures are of course not significant of pure performance, you have to consider lots of other things.

I'm just saying that for those interested in trackdays (rapidly growing activities in France and UK for instance), a Turbo will probably be a higher budget than a GT3 or an F430.
(Actually the F430 will balance with its maintenance cost I would think).

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

Have 996TTS Coupe w/Tip and, after some 15K mis of daily urban commuting and wkend mtn twisties, view it as clearly best car in world, price no object....at least until I trade it in to get my new 997TT Tip in July

Have always hated trad manuals (would rather focus on steering/brakes/accel/chassis feel in twisties, etc than working an archaic clutch mechanism)...not a racecar driver, so microscopic timing diffces mean little to me....I'd rather have car w/great driving "feel"...and IMO well-executed F1/DSG/Tip trumps any trad manual....

Only disappointments w/997TT from what I know to-date are lack of paddleshifters (ala '07 SL65)...as I find Tip buttons to be ergonomically worthless (and buttons can be accidentally activated during spirited driving)....and the ?chrome-finished wheels are too used-car/blingy/trashy looking IMO, but I'll be getting blk/blk w/PCCB&blk factory-painted wheels anyway....

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

will the OVERBOOST work better with the TIP or 6speed??

Now the question is: how many of you are going for Tiptronic instead of manual because of the better performance? 0.6 seconds from 0-125 mph are a word and don't forget one thing: the 3.7 seconds (from 0-62 mph) value can be ALWAYS achieved with Tiptronic, the 3.9 seconds with manual can only be achieved if the driver really is lucky and a good shifter.

Now all the M-B SL55 owners can upgrade to a car they can drive!

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

I am going for the Tip. Its faster and easier to drive and requires less skill from slackers like me. So Tip it is!

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

    Manual

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

Thumbs up on the new technology, thumb only half way up on design. Rear exhaust surrounds are cheap looking, as is the plastic front spoiler lip. The GT3 rear valence is much more exciting. Overall, and I have a deposit down for a new 997TT, I admit I am slightly dissapointed with the lack of an exciting design "WOW!" factor.

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

RC any idea on the cost of the sport chrono option in the US?
    TIA

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

    Thanks RC,

What a beautiful Monday and what a great thing to wake up to .

I've been so excited about the news and the pictures that it doesn't feel like crapy Monday morning going to work .

Now I have the whole day to keep myself busy with all the news and excitment and delay the projects at the office .

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

wow, those pictures look great. And the car looks much wider than the C4S.

I noticed the lack of an analog boost gauge however. I wonder how many people would prefer an analog gauge to the digital one. Half the fun of the boost gauge is watching that needle!

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

amazing that the tip is half a second faster even to 200kmh. to me this could interpreted as an indication that the tt will not be offered with PDK, but this will only come with the gt3. the argument could be that the relative comfort orientation of the tt doesnt really scream for PDK if on top they managed to improve it as massively as they have done!

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

the pics keep looking better & better! But I would've liked to see some exhaust tips that dont bear a strong resemblance to the base Carrera's

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

cannot believe tip is faster...dont no what to do, dont really like auto,s.....but.....

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

im confused also....i might order tip...

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

The car looks perfect , except for only the fog lights

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

Lol, it keeps us so busy that we have'n't noticed RC's new turbo banner... good job Christian!
    -Joost-

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

The new Turbo looks great. I like the wheels a lot more than I thought I would.
Thanks for the pics and info RC.

Re: Discuss the Official 997 Turbo Pictures and Info HERE

Thumbs up, but the car is cementing it's reputation as a very quick grand tourer (partially thanks to those stunning auto transmission times) as opposed to pure bred sports car. I'm not a potential owner, so I don't know if anyone sees this as a problem or not...?
