    Lightweight flywheel

I had an '05 GT3 pressure plate/disc, and RS lightweight flywheel installed on my '02 Turbo. The GT3 parts provide better clamping force, and the lightweight flywheel *really* improves throttle response and power delivery.

The OEM dual mass flywheel weighs ~29 lbs, while the RS flywheel weighs ~12 lbs. It may not sound like much difference, but the reduction in rotational weight makes a huge difference in terms of throttle response.

The clutch force is a little heavier, and the engagement point is much farther out from the floor. There is more noise at idle sitting still with the clutch out and the transmission in neutral. But the car is much more "sports car like" now - another step away from the Porsche OEM "GT'ish" presentation.

    Re: Lightweight flywheel

Did you ever have any issues with "check engine" lighting up, or other ECU problems since installing the lighter flywheel?

    Hi Dock,

I am thinking of having an 8-lb lightweight flywheel put on my Noble M400. Haven't thought about doing that to my 996TTS though. Where did you get yours?

I have GIAC's Stage 2 programming, and have had no problems at all.

I got mine from Kevin at Ultimate Moterwerks.

The parts are all Porsche Motorsports parts, so any Porsche dealer can get them...for more $$$.

    Thanks much.

    Re: Lightweight flywheel

Great idea installing an RS clutch on a Turbo, I will mention this to coustomers wanting more of a sporty feel in ther Turbos

    Re: Lightweight flywheel

Does anyone have the figures of each clutch for comparison? (torque, clamping power, etc)

I don't have the OEM pressure plate number, but the '05 GT3 pressure plate (the one I have in my Turbo now) has 850 Nm of clamping force.

    Re: Lightweight flywheel

Is there a lightweight Dual mass flywheel on the market for those who can't deal with the noise?

No dual-mass unit can be that light, but I understand that Andial in California sells a mid-weight flywheel that should be quieter...

    Oh c'mon, what's a few more decibels?

Any USA based Porsche dealership can order the 964RS Lightweight flywheel. The part number is #964-102-239-31 and the current dealer cost is ~$350USD. You will also need a starter ring gear and some other parts to make it work. Here's what it looks like

The Andial MWF is the stock RS (11 pound) LWF with 8 pounds of metal (literally) welded onto it. There is no vibration dampening so your gearbox at idle or when lugging at low rpm is just as loud. Basically the only application for the Andial unit is the OBD1 964 and MY95 993s that have off-throttle idle refueling schedules that are curved too slow. For everything else they are a waste of money.

    Thanks,

I would want a lightweight flywheel capable of handling > 625lb-ft or 850Nm torque (like Dock's), the upper limit of torque for my current upgrade. Any idea if that one can handle that much?

    Re: Lightweight flywheel

    no....single only.

    Dock(atlanta)
check engine lights have no conection to the clutch
