could it be that it has some sort of limited use launch control on the car that should only be used a few times like some of the BMW SMG's?

You have to picture this: electronic AWD system, electronic PSM system, electronic throttle control, electronically controlled boost pressure, electronically controlled engine parameters, electronically controlled tiptronic shifting parameters, electronically controlled overboost function...all connected together in a network and communicating one with each other. You get the picture?
PERFERCT traction and throttle control at launch without a trace of slip. Especially for people living in urban areas, the Tip could be the better choice for driving fun.

    Re: Official PICS!

    RC,

I know in the US that Tip is really poplular and manual cars or stick shift in the minority, but in the UK manuals for performance cars is the norm. Ferrari and Lambo buck the trend a little but I seem to have an inbuilt scepticism over tip gearboxes.

I understand your comments, but I love the action of changing gear and communicating with the car in that way.

In Germany what is the tip/manual breakdown.

Oh and where is the PDF ? :-)

Actually, the U.S. has one of the highest if not the highest proportion of manual 997s relative to tip 997s.

From what I understand Germany has the highest proportion of tip 997s relative to the manual 997s.

I don't know where you have this figure from but as far as I remember, it is somewhere close to 60:40 for manual. Don't know about the US, heard something about 50:50 but not sure if true.

    Re: Official PICS!

thats awesome.. i simply love it

    Re: Official PICS!

Wow, I'm stunned by the difference in performance Manual vs. Tiptronic. This makes for a tough decision...
the more involving, arguably more fun manual or the significantly faster tip ?

    Re: Official PICS!

Not to mention, Tiptronic was a $3400 option on the '05 Turbo S!

    Yeah,

If true, it makes me wonder if Porsche is intentionally tuning the Tip over the manual for possibly two reasons:
    1. To market the Tip (?probably not),
    2. They may be limiting the torque-generation with the manual due to concerns about the VTG's and overboost and reliability of the manual stock clutch/flywheel with this technology. Again, this begs for aftermarket re-programming.

Guys, any word in the order guide on rim options. I still can't warm up to those trendy tri-spokers.

    Re: Official PICS!

so I guess RC is ordering a tip

I order whichever is faster. I think eventually every manufacturer will gradually switch to F1/PDK/DSG and manual will become seldomly ordered, just my 2 cents.

Most people who buy a 430 or gallardo choose the F1/e-gear transmission. I to think F1/PDK/DSG will be the major transmission for all cars in the future. Consumers want the best of both worlds. You can be involved or you can be lazy, it's all up to you.

    Re: Official PICS!

Excellent, much better than the proptype pix, looks superb and i actually like the wheels..A+

    Re: Official PICS!

For some stupid reason i'm some happy (and i deserve it) today and i was wondering if the internet it's so predictable or rennteam.com it's so predictable.

I drank a couple * 5/6/7 before i posted this, but anyway i love you guys even nick berry..lol...god bless us all..

Hello there RC. Actually this was gathered from my Porsche magazines. I'd have to sift through them to find the exact statement and source. If I do search them, I'll post my reference. Maybe somebody else will beat me to posting it. I was actually surprised by this when I initially came across the info. I believe the mag was one of the UK ones..

    Re: Official PICS!

Hey RC I found this in the October 2005 issue of "Excellence: The Magazine About Porsche" in an article about the 2006 911 Carrera4/4S, on page 91 of the mag it states, "American Porsche buyers are surely hardcore enough: They order fewer Tiptronics than German customers do!"
I'll keep looking through my mags to find the other references..

Personaly I like to do the shifting myself, thats why I hope that manual will alway be available.

    Re: Official PICS!

This makes it a tough decision. I had a 2001 Twin Turbo Tip and i really missed shifting. I love my 997s Manuel and swore I would not buy a tip again. However the Tip is more practical in Seattle traffic and now to boot it is faster. Hmmmm.

    Re: Official PICS!

Took the liberty of trying to enhance the pics a little bit, someone with better PS skills than me might do an even better job. Or we could of course just wait until the pictures are released

    The car looks fantastic!

    Re: Official PICS!

    rear

    Re: Official PICS!

I love manual...and also if Tip is faster i think i will stay with manual..

but i need the order guideeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

    where is the order guide?

    Re: Official PICS!

Now that the New 997GT3 will be out as well, Why cant we order for the turbo the new GT3's Carrera GT seats?!?!

The problem seems to be that the carbon shells are missing the thorax airbags. I'm pretty sure that they're going to be an option sooner or later but right now, I don't think they'll be available on the launch cars.

    Re: Official PICS!

the reason that tip is faster...is it because tiptronic is 7 speed with short gear ratios??

Good question. I think one major reason why the Tip seems to be faster is the networked communication between all the black boxes responsible for engine management, traction management, gears exchange management and power distribution management. But I can also imagine that the Tiptronic on the 997 Turbo is some sort of "hybrid", an intermediate solution between a conventional auto tranny and the rumored PDK. I honestly don't know, it remains to be seen. It is however interesting that the Tiptronic not only seems to be faster from 0-60 mph but also up to 100 mph and maybe even at higher speed ranges. Top speed also seems to be the same for Tip and manual, which is pretty weird. If Porsche succeeded in adapting the new Mercedes 7-speed auto tranny and leading it's software programming to new heights, I'm pretty sure that it is going to be the hell of an auto tranny. I'm still confused and although I'm a manual tranny type of guy, for better performance, I would switch to Tip.

    Re: Official PICS!

That's one way of convincing yourself to go with the 997 GT3 RS.

Would it undermine your argument if someone suggested you put the front seats of the Transit in the back of the Transit?

    Re: Official PICS!

But the bed is in the back of the Transit?!
