Early gut feeling reaction poll ..

    Hi everyone,,

I know its early but I do feel the 997TT looks artificial compared to the raw ready and up for it 997GT3.

In the flesh will of course tell the true story but what do you guys think as of now ??..

    Tick your early preference..

Re: Early gut feeling reaction poll ..

Personally, the wing of the GT3 has always been a little over the top for me for street driving. I voted Turbo.

Re: Early gut feeling reaction poll ..

Fwiw ,, my pref was the 997GT3...

Its the weekend tool right ..

Re: Early gut feeling reaction poll ..

The look of GT3 is better, but I can't look past the ungodly power & daily driveability of the TT, so TT's mechanicals trump it's own lackluster styling cues.
Gut feeling on aesthetics IMO on scale 1-100 (from pics, of course): the GT3 is about a 95 (rear wing still too tall & incongruous), Turbo=70, regular C2/C4 = 95

Good post Damian and I am pretty much the same on the aesthetics figures..

More material for this poll; 19-page GT3 brochure.....+ some 997TT studio pics at the end.
(sorry if this is a repost).

Re: Early gut feeling reaction poll ..

I think the GT3 is aesthetically the best 997 yet-but you can't argue with TT's performance. GT3 combines the best aspects of the normal 997 with much more 'attitude'.TT looks a bit contrived-But you can't argue with the TT's iron efficency at going fast everywhere compared to hard work (and skill) necessary to get the GT3 to go really fast.

Senseless poll? I doubt that we're talking about the same type of customer here. The 997 Turbo is a hightech street driving machine with incredible traction capabilities. The 997 GT3 is more of a race car for public streets, allowing weekend track racers to have fun on the track and drive in it to work too during the week.

In my opinion, the 997 Turbo and GT3 are two different beasts for different types of customers.

RC I do know what you are implying , but for me any 997 would be a weekend fun tool hence my 2nd post above , so for this reason I think why not just go for the hardcore one , obviously still have a good demo's to make the correct choice . Also I bet only a small % of GT3 owners track their car , so imo its a lifestyle pending decision as well as an enthusiast one..

Turbo looks better for me. I just can't get my head around that Ricer Wing on the Gt3...

I was thinking like you...this is why I actually asked my dealer to keep his first GT3 for me because I wasn't sure about the Turbo. At that time, we had heard the rumor that the GT3 will be introduced in march and the Turbo in June.
Now it seems that both cars are introduced almost at the same time. Interesting decision, I didn't expect it.

Now, why did I change my order again and why did I choose to finally go for a 997 Turbo? Simple: I have to keep the car five years, otherwise I can't really afford it.
Then, I don't think that I'm going to the track more than once or twice a year, with two little kids life is different now. I also want to have a rocket for the german Autobahn, a car which not only is fast in twists and turns but at higher speed ranges to avoid feeling inferior to those S600, S65, SL55/65, M5/M6 and so on. And I want a lot of safety because as a working person with lots of things to think about (work, kids, money, future, etc.), it can't be excluded that I loose my concentration once, resulting in a dangerous driving situation. This is where I want to have PSM, AWD, thorax airbags, etc. as some sort of safety net. When I'm taking my kids with me for a ride, these safety features will make me feel much more comfortable too. Which brings me to my next point: a GT3 would be a very dangerous car for me since I would always try to exploit it's limits. I'm pretty confident that in a 997 Turbo, this is much safer. Do I chicken out? Yes, I think you could say that. I would love to own a GT3 and I always wanted to get one. I always chickened out because immediately, I had my two kids in front of my eyes and I know myself too good. So not getting a GT3 is some sort of protection for me, a protection from myself. Call it stupid but believe it or not, I feel much safer in a 480 HP Turbo than in a 415 HP GT3.

But one thing is for sure: the new 997 GT3 is a blast, the performance figures are fantastic. A normally aspirated 911 hitting 100 mph in 8.7 seconds...WOW. I'm pretty sure that every time I see one of these babies on the street, I will feel a little bit sad. But I know that the 997 Turbo is the right car for me...no looking back.

Re: Early gut feeling reaction poll ..

Hey throt, how come we can only choose one in this poll?
    I want to choose BOTH!!

Re: Early gut feeling reaction poll ..

Any chance they will offer the interior of the GT3 on the TT as an option!?

Are you joking? You must be joking. If you're talking about the seats only, yes, they're rumored to be available for the 997 TT sooner or later. Getting the soft leather steering wheel shouldn't be a problem either.
Otherwise, I'm not quite sure what you want from the GT3 interior...because the 997 TT interior is practically the same.

I agree - It's pretty incredible that they get the same power (415hp) as the 996TT from the same motor (3.6L drysump block). I really expected it would take 3.8L to get to 415hp without turbos. I wonder if the RS will have 3.8L (and maybe 435hp?)...

    Don't forget the upshift light!

For me safety is important due to family reason. But the important factor for me is which would be more enjoyable given the horrible state of the roads need me. The PASM in my 997S in comfort makes up for some of this. I'm sure the TT would be ok but not the GT3. The fact that it now comes with PASM does lead me to believe I could use it for my weekend car without loosing my teeth due to the ride.

In previous posts, you mentioned that the 997TT will do 0-100mph in around 8.0 seconds so don't feel too sad.

Re: Early gut feeling reaction poll ..

Don't you think that for the RS they won't concentrate on power but on reducing weight? For track work weight is the enemy! If you take out all the trim unecessary for track work and all the convenience features, add carbon hood, thin glass/plastic windows, Ceramic brakes and so-on they should be able to get to 1275 kg range? Perhaps a bit shorter gearing, conventional springs/shocks and you have a track rocket? What do you think- more '73RS approach and back to basics?

We're still waiting for RS data, so everything I say now is speculation: I think that you're right, the RS will be lighter and I'm sure some important comfort stuff will be missing like the PCM or the A/C. It may have a few horses more on the paper but the added performance will come from additional weight reduction and probably from a more "conventional" chassis (not PASM) with LSD. I also think that sport tires (semi-slicks) will be a standard option. So let them surprise us... One thing is for sure: the price tag will be very surprising, don't even think about a bargain.
