The 15 Mth wait is coming to an end! The dealer told me so!!

Just got off the phone with my OPC.

The car is being built as we speak. After 15 months I am finally getting the car! It will be somewhere between 3 and 7 days late (I'd have thought they could get that bang on after 15 months). But after such a long wait what's a week matter!

If they had taken much longer I'd have got the facelift model!

Phew! (and you guys probably thought I had just been pretending I'd orered one just to fit in!)

Well done, great time of the year to pick it up. There are plenty of threads on here about what you need to remember for the big day - plenty of time and a camera spring to mind. I drove about 5 miles down the motorway and got a stone flicked up straight into the windscreen - one of those moments where you see it coming towards you but can do nothing about it...

Re: The 15 Mth wait is coming to an end! The dealer told me

Madadd, why has it taken so long. It must be doing your head in. Mind you, it's on it's way now. Excellent. Means you need to book a week off work.

Re: The 15 Mth wait is coming to an end! The dealer told me

    15 Months!
Are you having it gold plated?

What spec did you go for in the end, I tried to have a quick scan on your posts, but couldn't find one.

Have you said goodbye to the Skyline yet?

Re: The 15 Mth wait is coming to an end! The dealer told me

Thats a record wait time - thought my 9 month wait was bad enough.... this is the best part of the waiting - knowing your car is on its way....
    Enjoy

Small Northern dealers have small northern allocations. I could have had the car October. But being a ham fisted driver who relies on 'techno wizardry' to stay out of accidents I decided it best not to learn my Rear wheel drive skills in the bad weather.

    The spec is ermm..

997 Carrera S Coupe in Guards Red
    Aerokit
    Carrera Classics
    Sports Exhaust
    Short Shift
    Sport Chrono Plus
    Sport Seats
    Guards Red centre console
    Sat Nav
    Telephone
    Homelink
    Coloured Wheel Centres
    Stainless Door Sills

    Unless i forgot something.

Don't like the aerokit myself. Just got it cos I know how much Throt hates them! And I felt like winding him up

Skyline is up for sale in autotrader now. Hopefully I will find someone who wants to give it a new home. It will be missed!!! If my 997 doesnt stand up to scrutiny I'd happily get another (if they do actually bring another fast one out!)

    Cheers

    Madadd,

Congrats on spec. I'm due to get mine in April, and it will have been 2yrs and 2months from my Pounds3k deposit. So probably win the ait game....but mainly as a result of not having a licence for medical reasons.

I'm very impressed, i nearly went Guards Red too, but was persuaded to go Seal Grey at last minute. The only thing i stuck firm on was the -20mm s/s - suprised you didn't go for it since you're spec is so 'sporty'. I too went for Sports Chrono, Sports Seats & Sports Exhaust.

    Congrats!!!

    Congratulations Madadd!

You deserve a medal for waiting so patiently!

    I second that.

Congratulations. I'm sure you'll feel the wait was worth it when you drive it for the first time, and second time, and third time, etc.

Re: The 15 Mth wait is coming to an end! The dealer told me

    Nice sporty spec
Saw a gaurds red c2S with areo kit whilst confirming my colour choice at Porsche UK at the weekend, very nice.

You've got the all the good roads up there too! I'm sure you'll have a blast.

The not -20mm decision was based on a variety of things. Much of what was found on here. At the end of the day, my interpretation of it is..

-20mm makes the car feel sharper and more in touch. So it improves the driving experience. It makes it 'feel' better.

However, it gives virtually no increase in performance over PASM. Just because it 'feels' better does not mean it actually is (difference in ring times was less than 1% from memory) . And for most of my driving it would be less comfortable (Its a daily driver for me).

Also, the dealer told me that I would get considerably less at trade in based on previous Porsche sports suspensions. He says they do cause damage to residuals and recommended I stay away.

So a mixture of things. Would I have liked -20mm. Yes. I love a rock hard ride. But I love comfort too and my 997 is a car of compromises. So I went with compromise suspension.

And its one extra toy to show off! Press button suspension goes hard. Press again .. goes soggy.. cool!

    Cheers

Exactly the reason I never went for it also.

Re: The 15 Mth wait is coming to an end! The dealer told me

My dealer talked me out of -20mm too but didn't mention residuals. What did your dealer say? How much of a hit would you get come trade in time? I'm thinking of a GT3 which now will get PASM and I suppose will get the option of conventional shocks. If the GT3 is more road this time than race then I wonder which would be best??

    A sport suspension 911 is a compromise.
In terms of residual, it will be either very good or very bad.
Because it's such a niche 911 (as in more focused, ideal for fun trackdays) it doesn't attract the mainstream 911 potential buyer.
Never sell your used 911 at OPC anyway, they are thieves.
A sport susp. 997 will sell easily to the rest buyers.
For instance, I've had two offers in two weekends! (they were trackdays).
Every car will sell well if you find the right buyer

Re: The 15 Mth wait is coming to an end! The dealer told me so!!

    Congratulations mate!

Re: -20mm sports suspension, UK dealers always try to put you off this when nearly all of them have never even driven a car with -20mm sports suspension. How are they qualified/competent to say this??

If you look at the following graph which Porsche produced, it shows clearly that PASM sport can be both softer and harder than -20mm depending on the damper speed/force in question...in fact, in some situations, it is even possible for PASM normal to be stiffer than -20mm sports suspension (according to this graph).

Re: The 15 Mth wait is coming to an end! The dealer told me so!!

Must admit I wanted both Guards and -20mm; the dealer convinced me not to go for the colour because of trade-in. Interestingly he reckoned that in the South East of UK Guards can mean upto Pounds4k less on trade in that in the North of the UK?

He did try and convince me out of the -20mm too, but i was only prepare to comprimise on one Also, my previous ride was a V8GT Esprit, so used to fairly hard suspension, and having seen the graph above before, i was convinced it would be OK. Also i know come to sell there will be people out there who want the s/s - though i do plan to keep the car for at least 5yrs, so will probably become less of a resale issue at that time.

Re: The 15 Mth wait is coming to an end! The dealer told me so!!

AshD, did you pick the -20mm only because you're planning to do track days? Or is it because you want the firmer ride generally too?

Re: The 15 Mth wait is coming to an end! The dealer told me so!!

    Easy_rider911

Planning to do the odd day or two / year, but i'm by no means a skilled hand to the level where i'd appreciate the lap time difference with PASM.

My main reasoning was that in 'Sport' mode on the test car i drove it just didn't feel 'right'. I can't put my finger on exactly what it was, but i didn't like it - and it wasn't the stiffness / harshness. Having driven a V8 Esprit for sometime, and arguably Lotus are the finest chassis engineers around, I loved the level of feedback you get in those from the helm. The 997S with PASM was good, but not quite there, and everything i've read suggests -20mm is much better in that sense.

The other plus point i like is that undoubtedly the -20mm is bound to be cheaper to maintain / replace shocks, etc. than the PASM ones - which undoubtedly will cost a bl**dy fortune.

My dealer said that 90% of his buyers would not want a car with -20mm (due to their age I guess). Thus adding that reduces the buying audience when I want to sell it on. This does seem to make sense to me.

We didn't talk about how bad it would hit price. But he was thiking of my (and his) best interests at sale time.

    Guards is back!

On the 996 is was a no no. It apparently wasn't too easy (and still isnt) to move guards 996's.

But since so many magazine cars for the 997 (and Porsche advert cars) have been in guards that has helped demand hugely. Red is selling again. And people are starting to consider it once more (as can be seen on here!)

The dealer explained it will never be as easy to move on as black or silver. But reasonable demand does now exist. He suggested that I should expect around Pounds1000 less for it at resale time than had I chosen silver. (whereas with a 996 it would have been a huge chunk off! Although 4K sounds like a lot even for a 996))

So neither here nor there considering the extra cost an purchase time for silver.

It was based on the simple fact that he has been the owner of his OPC since the late 40's (or I think his dad was before him). And in his considerable experience HIS customers don't want sports suspension. And it would put many of them off the car.

In this case I accepted his wisdom. I am trusting him with my 75K, so why not trust him on this one. He's been involved with these things infinitely more than I.

ALthough as you quite rightly pointed out .. He did admit he hadn't driven the 997 -20mm. Only the various previous incarnations!

Congrats. The next stage can move quicker than the dealers say it will so keep hassling them to find out progress. Mine was at the docks one day and predicted to be with them about 4 days later - turned up the next day.
