    check engine light saga

So I've got a 05 997 C2, about 15k miles. Started it one morning a few weeks ago and the check engine light came on. Message said visit workshop, so I made an appointment and drove it to work. Car ran real rough, low on power, so something's obviously wrong. Limped it down to the dealer and they said it was the variable cam solenoid. Makes sense. Replaced that and I drove away happy. After 50 miles and a couple days later the check engine light comes back on, and drives like a dog again. I stop and start it 4 or 5 times after that, and each time the light comes on, consistent. Call the dealer again. This time dealer says don't drive it, and we tow it to dealer. Next day dealer says no light, no problem, car drives fine! I tell them to keep it, try again, because that doesn't make sense. Then, finally after trying for a couple days they get it to happen again. But they're stumped as to the cause and cure. Whatever codes the computer is giving them doesn't seem to be leading them to a fix.

Any one here have any clues? Anything else I should be doing to get this resolved?

    Re: check engine light saga

You didn't got any electronic gags retrofitted perhaps?
They can cause most unbelievable things to happen to your el.systems.
    That's what i heard...

    Re: check engine light saga

Assuming you're servicing it with the Mobil 1 0 weight?

    Re: check engine light saga

bought it used (certified pre owned), only put a few hundred miles on it before the trouble started. Couldn't say for sure what kind of oil was put in it. It's bone stock except added the PSE while it was in for service for the first check engine light episode (thanks to the peer pressure from this group).

    Re: check engine light saga

One area to check is the fuel side. I used to have nothing but nightmare problems with fuel in a 911. Are you buying the top brand fuels, e.g. Mobil, Shell, Chevron, etc. and not buying the crap from Terrible Hurst...? I had to replace a fuel pump, filter and dump a load of gas once when Sunnoco had contamination at a station once.

    Re: check engine light saga

I'm sure you've already checked the gas cap but did you check the oil res cap? Have you added oil recently? A loose oil res cap will cause the exact sort of thing you are experiencing.

    Re: check engine light saga

yep, I did check the cap. Would a loose oil cap and/or gas cap cause misfiring? One thing that was done to the car recently was the oil filler recall.
As for gas, I've always put Chevron Supreme in it.

    Re: check engine light saga

It won't cause a misfire but it will cause the car to sputter, which is kinda like a misfire.

    Re: check engine light saga

This stuff bugs me. There is a guy or team of guys, or a two or three branch offices of guys at Porsche somewhere in the world wwho know the answer to your problem.

WTF is with the dealer, with all the secret phone numbers, he can't get an answer? Geez! It's not searching for a cure for cancer. it's a frickin engine: everything is rational and known about them.

IMO, the dealer is lazy and not doing what may be required: lots of calls, research.

    Re: check engine light saga

sigh, yeah it's making me crazy.
Latest guess is water in the fuel, and I won't get an answer on whether that's it until Monday afternoon. And even if that is it, I don't have the car for another weekend, and I'm in Seattle for first part of next week, so it's really another week without the car.

    Re: check engine light saga

So they pumped out the old gas and put in fresh tasty gas and gave the car back to me. I drove the car a block and the check engine light came back on, car misses and stumbles. So it's back in the shop for more head scratching. Got a load of BS about how the gas in the NW is low quality. But unless all the cars in the NW have this issue, I'm assuming mine is the one that's broken, and that now that we've pumped out old gas and put in the dealer's favorite gas, we can move on to other causes that aren't fuel quality related.

    Re: check engine light saga

Caveman: That is such BS. How long has the car been at the dealer now? Over a week? If I were you I would demand to speak with the regional Porsche service rep.

If they suspected bad/contaminated gas they should have also changed the fuel filter.....

    Re: check engine light saga

long story short, I now have the car back and seems to be running great.
They checked the #1 coil and it was cracked. Replaced that and it seems all better now. I did manage to get the regional service rep involved and he was quite helpful.
So happy to have my baby back. Sure hope that is the last pain this car gives me. I did have a bit of trouble, but I must say that in the end Porsche did make me happy. Just look at this smile

    Re: check engine light saga

I had the "ceck Engine" light for a while on my 997S .
Cats broken .......they change the cats and now all good
