    C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

Hello everyone...I am new to this forum and would appreciate some opinions. I am considering purchasing a new 997. With the budget that I have I can't decide whether to buy a C2 Cab or a C2S Coupe (approx. the same cost). I like a cab but where I live I could only get top down use for 5 months or so. Thus the dilemna. Performance vs warm weather fun ??? Thanks

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

    Hi!

Had to make the same decision : I took the cab

Great advantage: You hear the PSE much better

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

I was in the same position. I wanted the C2S Coupe but my wife and kids wanted the C2 Cab. We ended up with the C2 Cab and boy was that the best decision. Having the top down is the best. I guess I am giving up some performance but based on my driving style it really didn't matter that much to me.

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

Don't live in LA? (or simliar latitude) Then get the Coupe. Plus there's less road noise with the coupe. It looks more clasically 911 in profile. No unsightly wrinkles, chafe, dirt and lines from framework. My two cents.

P.S. Don't want to offend anybody who owns a cab. I also have a BoxsterS and I enjoy the ragtop being down now and then but not everytime I drive it.

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

I'm with MMD. I also don't wish to snub cab lovers, but I hope I'm allowed to honestly relate my own personal opinion.

I drove convertibles as daily-drivers from 1988 through 1998. The novelty wore off. I still find top-down driving to be extremely pleasant and enjoyable on SPECIAL days where the weather is fantastic, and I've got a good drive to make. But for daily use, driving around on public display isn't my cup of tea, and having no roof over me in traffic just isn't the nirvana for me that so many others claim.

One thing I do feel strongly about... The 911 body-style in coupe form IS the super-model of 911's. The roofline of the 911 coupe, and the sexy way the c-pillar blends into the hips of the car, is iconic, and is the lynch-pin in the styling of the car. Without the sexy and aggressive sweeping roof, the car quickly devolves into an upside-down bathtub with a windshield. I find it to be a compromise, one that some find to be minor, and others (like me) find to be major. And then there are those who actually prefer the styling of the cab. To each their own.

To me, The 911 design simply does not transition to convertible as naturally, or gracefully, as a Mercedes SL, or Jag XK. Those cars are conceived in a way that stands on it's own with the roof down. With the 911, I don't believe that in any of its past iterations, that it has ever lended itself well to convertible versions. The old bathtub 356's were quirky to begin with, basic shapes, and as-such, they were just as nifty as coupes or droptops, it "worked" either way. But the 911 was a design that really made the roofline and greenhouse a focus of the design. When you whack it off and replace it with a chunkier looking cloth roof, it takes a bigger toll on the car.

For those of you driving and adoring your cabs, peace be with you my brothers!!!

It comes down to what's most important to you.

It's a personal decision, not one that asking for opinions will help in any way.

I could not have said it better.

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

I agree with Boss also. The 911 looks like a turtle in cab form but I can live with it since the exhaust sounds amazing with the top down driving through tunnels and down New York City streets where it echoes off the buildings.

Whatever puts a smile on your face, go with it. It's your money.

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

    I totally agree with bossnine.

I'd probably go for the C2S over the C2 Cab. I think this dilemma for consumers was quite well thought out by Porsche.
I'm sure they'd like to see someone end up with the C2S Cab to end the dilemma.

If I got the cab, after a little time I'd probably not even put the top down much, even if I lived in the right climate. The fun would wear off and I'd probably wish I would've gotten the coupe. Can't compare the looks of the coupe with the cab IMO. No contest there.

The Merc SL however looks great top up or down, but I HATE the way it drives. Way too heavy of a roadster.

You're right the Cab wins hands down

With the top down it does for sure!

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

This is of course the hardest decision. Having been a coupe man all my life (and this is my 3rd 911) I decided on a cabriolet for a change. A couple of factors moved we to that decision: (1) A cabriolet is for cruising,--not for racing; and (2) everyone should own a cabriolet at least once in their life. I felt that the cabriolet would help slow me down a bit. I used to drive a turbo and it was the speed thing that I had to have. With the top down you FEEL the speed a low quicker. I have to agree with others about the LOOK. There is nothing like a 911 Coupe,--that ikonic shape is what has sold it for 40 years. But,--if anyone can build a cabriolet form of the 911, Porsche can. I took this whole thing one step further,--I ordered the hard top for it so that I could be close to a coupe if those bad weather days dictated it. (The SoCal location doesn't hurt either for a cab).

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

Congrads on your decision. Either way you would have a killer ride .

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

Wait for the targa! I was never interested in the Targa unti a friend leant me his for a while, boy did I enjoy that car! I would give it a test drive - Porsche claim it to be the best of both worlds, I agree my 2 cents worth

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

almost four months with my C2S Cab... I think I could somehow live without the extra power of the S but would have a hard time without the cab. Of course there are many other very valuable things that come with the S that aren't noticeable from just the appearance. Then there are some features that are exclusive to the cabs... Come to think about it, I'd scratch most of the $15K worth of options (except for PSE) and keep the S and Cab.

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

I used to live in Rhode Island, and I had the top down on some of those 'warm' days in November and February. In actual fact the driving top down season can be a lot longer than you think. With heated seats and the heater blasting, with temps in the high 40's low 50's the cabin is nice and tosty warm. Nothing titilates the senses more than a breath of fresh cool crisp air caressing your forehead and back, with the warmth of the heated seats on your back with the blower shooting hot air on your arms and chest. Get the cab, unless you want to track the car (The biggest reason I would have a problem with is the added roll protection the coupe has vs the rollbars) and well you can still autocross. With reguards to performace, in day to day driving I think there is absolutely no difference. Maybe when you are above 150 mph, the difference in structural ridgidity might be noticable, but I'm no expert there. I think that the tiptronic coupe looses more performance than a manual cab.

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

I'm moving from a C2S to a C2S Cab. The chance to drive a car with the top down in 20 seconds or so is very appealing. And it seems to be almost as quiet as a coupe. I will miss the purity of shape of the coupe, but one thing I won't miss is the rattly sunroof...

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

Get the Cab. They arent as serious, but they are more fun.

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

Get the Coupe !! More performance and it has the classic 911 look. Just me 2 cts

    Re: C2 Cab or C2S Coupe ????

Hadn't had an 'open top' since my teenage years, until my previous car (the one before my current 997S Coupe)

At first it was a novelty again - some may say "youth re-visited" The novelty soon wore off, not so much because it's impractical in a UK climate, which it is, but because I felt really uncomfortable, even vulnerable, in traffic.

Maybe it's because I'm older now and perhaps age does play a part in choosing Coupe v Cab, but all I know is I'm much happier in the Coupe (with sunroof, which doesn't rattle!) and prefer being less exposed.

I also think the car is safer with a metal roof and agree with the comments that the lines are much more classic 911.
