    Engine?  http://www.themarshalltown.com/next-generation-2019-porsche-911-could-get-audi-r8-540-hp-boost/19659

Most inaccurate article I read for a very long time.

Fact 1: 911 doesn't get a mid engined layout but the next Porsche sportscar platform can accommodate a mid engined layout as well, we discussed this before many months ago.

Fact 2: The R8 with bi-turbo V6 will be based on the current R8, not the new platform.

Fact 3: The new platform will be used for the next Huracan (and maybe R8...if there is going to be one) generation.

Fact 4: The next gen (992) 911 Carrera will not get 540 hp. Ever. Also, the V6 bi-turbo stays a flat six engine. It is a Porsche "signature" engine for the 911. The R8 surely won't get a flat six. Smiley

That would push more more and more towards McLaren , or consider Porsche to have become the new Audi . But then as well go for the original and get an R8 Smiley

I am getting really excited for the 992, so far all facts you state sound like great news to me kiss From the mules, it looks like they are going after a 993 look with those headlights and hood line.. I bet it will be a clean and sexy new 911. Maybe someday I could save for the 992 GTS since those seem such great deals and look stunning wink

I'm not a fan of the current sport exhaust style. I really hoped they bring back the 4 pipes sport exhaust. Too bad surprise

The front fenders look as wide as the ones on the current RS !! The car will look good kiss

The new design was something customers asked for. They (customers) wanted people to see what they paid for. Smiley Smiley I'm not a big fan either but it is OK. You need to get used to it though.

Ouch. Porsche was lucky that the photographer didn't get better detail shots but one was definitely a 992 mule.

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

So I am sitting outside in Frankfurt at the top of the pedestrian zone having a beer (as one may do if in Frankfurt and work has finished on a Fri afternoon..). there is a crossing so cars need to stop for pedestrians and then they  start again. Allows one to listen to engine sound and exhaust sound from the outside. Couple of observations which are relevant for the 992 / Porsche please listen!!!

    - 991.2 sounds flat (and not the right flat like a flat six!). flat exhaust hum and no effectively discernible engine sounds

    - Merc CLS63, G63, Jeep SRT, real and proper engine noise which just sounds good. Yes, I did write Jeep!

please Porsche can you spend some time focussing on the sound of the 992, I know it will be a modified 991.2 engine but there has to be something you can do to free up the flat six....

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

True . And a good example M4 M3 they're V6 turbo but they sound rally  good. I don't like louder exhausts, but a good sound is enough at least.

You are kidding, right? The 991.2 PSE sounds way better. Actually, the current M4/M3 models are the best example of how an exhaust should NOT sound. Btw: BMW uses the HiFi speakers for enhancing the sound in the interior. Try to listen to the M4/M3 from the outside. Even the performance exhaust sounds crappy, very similar to the Macan Turbo PSE and very generic.

McLaren has similar generic sounds but they sound better than M4/M3 (probably due to the V8 engine).

Best Turbo sounds so far on modern cars: Ferrari 488 and maybe the 675LT.

The question is: How much longer can car manufacturers fool certification authorities. Sound emissions levels are getting stricter and stricter and especially with turbo charged cars, it is pretty difficult to achieve a nice sound without getting them too loud.

The M4/M3 is possibly the worst sounding car in the market.

Surprisingly, the 4 cylinder turbo does not sound bad, for a 4 cyl. that is.

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

maybe true, the new M3/M4 most of its sound is exhaust noise. Although nothing will be like GTS non turbo, but I really hope that they improve the current sound.

    Hi folks,

I want just to share some informations I got these days about 992.

    - already known, no hybrid - and yes! it was planned but things changed - the system was like the Panamera one, inside the gearbox

    - Piech brings us Ferrari people have for a longer time - a dashboard for the passenger

    - optional carbon parts under the rear spoiler - which is wider and when opens you don´t have to see cheap plastic parts - this parts could be ordered in carbon

Does this mean that they may be using composite materials on the cars and focusing on weight savings? That would indeed be a great thing for the 911 which has in recent years been pegged as leaning more towards GT car, rather than a "sports car"

why did Porsche decide not to go for hybrid tech in 992?

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

Because the new Panamera platform will finally spawn a coupe, a la 928 and that car will have crazy hybrid tech! smiley

    Wondering the same... ?

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

My guess would be because they could not bring the weight or the size of the hydrid part down enough for it to be used in the 911, which does not have the luxury of getting 200-300kg fatter like a SUV or sedan can or have plenty of space.

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

The weight of the current 991 Turbo S is the absolute maximum I would bear. So glad it won't be a hybrid. Terrible reliability and heavy weight - the two things I hate the most in a car, doesn't matter how fast it is on a track.

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

Impossible to shoehorn in the large battery in the 911-platform to keep the back seat configuration intact. Don't think putting the battery in the front is an option and even if it was that would bring the boot space down to minimal in the front.

As has been said, the hybrid package is just too heavy and would destroy the nimbleness of the 911 even if they can reduced the weight of the hybrid package from 300kg to 200kg that is too much anyway. So for the 992 they did the right choice.

Either keep the combustion engine or go full EV like for the Mission-E. Hybrids will turn out to be just a bad compromise. I'm afraid that Porsche did a mistake putting a lot of R&D into hybrids, they should instead focus all those resources on full EV and develop the combustion engines for their sport cars until they can offer EV even in those.

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

The VW effect is very negative for Porsche. The brand looses their unique Sportscars and design culture. Integrated in a monster enterprise everything gets paralyzed. Trump would say - "this is no good - no good at all. Terrible!".
