    Mercedes SL 55 and SL 65 AMG Facelift Unveiled

    The enhanced AMG 5.5-litre V8 supercharged engine at the heart of the SL 55 AMG is equipped with a new, higher-speed supercharger compressor and a larger throttle valve to optimise the fresh-air supply. In addition, the installation of an even more efficient engine management unit has boosted the output of the AMG V8 powerplant from 368 kW/500 hp to 380 kW/517 hp, while the peak torque has been increased from 700 to 720 Nm. The new SL 55 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds (outgoing model: 4.7 seconds) and goes on to reach an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

    Just placed order for '07 SL65 (build spot timing not yet avail for US); car to be used as second commuter car (in addition to 997TT)....am a huge fan of 65's exhaust note, mid-range torque, and large fuel tank (great characteristics for dry road, straight-line commuting duty)...and the steering/susp/brake/paddle shifter impvmts are very promising......997TT will clearly be the world's fastest and safest rainy day AWD urban/fwy commuter machine and wkend mtn twisties missle (though sadly perhaps the quietest missle as well )....

    BTW, keep hearing that MB will put 63 motor into AMG SL and S-Class by Dec '06, so this revised SL55 may have a short lifespan, before the engine is obsolete.

    Also heard '07 S65 won't arrive in US until Dec '06, not mid-'06 as MB press releases originally claimed.....

    Viken, just what i was thinking, i guess they will just start dropping the NA V8 in when they are ready...

    I suspect many non-P fans couldn't easily differentiate a 996 vs 997 either.... ...but who cares????

    Revised 65 changes are largely performance-related, not cosmetic......which IMO, is a far more interesting approach for car guys, though too subtle/boring for non-car people....I'd rather get tighter steering/susp/brakes/paddle shifters/8-10 more hp/lb-ft than any attempt to Bangle-ize a decent-looking car like 65, simply for sake of change that's more visible to non-car guys/chicks....

    Some additional info-There is now option AMG Performance Package(code 030) for SL55 AMG which includes:
    AMG front apron with larger cooling intakes
    19" AMG multi-piece twin-spoke light-alloy wheels
    Max.speed limit is moved to 300km/h
    Multiple-disc limited slip differentil inc. reinforced final drive unit
    AMG Nurburgring sport suspension based on ABC
    Front composite discs 380 x 36mm
    Additional engine oil cooler
    AMG sport steering wheel with Black alcantara inserts

    Almost the same car as SL65 AMG but, for 60000Euro less in Europe...

    Interesting to see DC finally come up with Carbon-Ceramic brake discs for their regular cars (SLR aside). Does this option only include CCM brakes at the front?

    Since DC holds a 50% share at the Brembo CCM division, the CCM should be the same as those used by Ferrari.

    Rossi, Composite discs are only at the front, rears are normal 330 x 26mm AMG discs.
    In AMG brochure they defend it by saying that SL55 is almost 200kg lighter then SL65...
    BTW, new SL65 uses them on front and rear...

    CCM all around in the new SL65? Even more intersting! At least you can expect the latest brake technology for that price.

    Any info about the costs for the AMG performance package for the SL55?

    But I just learned, that composite brakes in the AMG performance package does not mean carbon-ceramic-brakes.

    Yes Rossi, that's true... Unfortunately Mercedes claimed COMPOSITE all over their new AMG brochure. But, these are definitely not Ceramic brakes. BTW, did you here all that rumours about SLR brakes... Maybe it is better not to have them on facelifted SL AMGs!

    This is wrong.
    The 63 AMG n/a V8 won't make it in the facelifted SL but in the brand new SL which won't come out for at least another 3 years.
    Plans may change but this is what it is for now.
    I agree, it's silly, especially since this engine is making way for now into the ML.
    The next 63AMG sports car will be the CLK63AMG which BTW should be awesome.

    This info is 100% sure.
