    Tiptronic on the Cayman

    Before anyone flames me for getting a Tip Porsche, I'd like to head that off and say that I had no choice.

    I noticed when test driving the Cayman S, that the Tiptronic starts in 2nd gear. The sales guy claimed this was due to fuel efficiency but another person said it is done to prevent wheel spin. Does anyone know whether either of these are true or if there is another explanation?

    Also, is there a way to force Tip to start in 1st gear when in automatic mode? I know that I can downshift when stopped and in Manual mode.

    I have had a tiptronic, and both reasons are true, the car in 1st gear will drink a bit more juice because more than likely you are going to put your foot down in 1st and drive it that much harder. And of course there is not much chance of the wheel spinning in 2nd gear unless its really wet or icy or something.

    If you drive the car hard and break real hard the mapping changes and will automatically go into first gear when you stop, alternatively you can just drop the car into first as you pull to a stop. What colour and specs did you get? Must have photos please!

    I wish I had photos to share...The Cayman S is on order for an April delivery. The wait is excruciating. Only way I keep sane is:

    I was able to test drive the Cayman S before I placed the order.

    I placed an order with Arctic Silver with black interior, the Preferred Package Plus with Tip, Sport Chrono, Sport steering wheel, PCM, auto-climate control and Park Assist.

    I did a number of autocross runs in a Tip Cayman last weekend and I was impressed with the responsiveness of the car...I had never driven a Tip before

    Congrats on a hot car. All Porsche Tips start in second gear when the engine is warm. You'll notice on initial startup the car steps off in first gear (to get heat into the catalytic converters to reduce emissions). Second gear start is to get fuel economy numbers and to make it step off more smoothly.

    Try this: put the Sport Chrono in Sport mode and see what it does to the transmission. Also, try turning off PSM. You'll see that you are now driving a totally different beast.

    You could put it in "m" mode and shift into any gear you'd like to be in.
