I have driven in both, The GT3 is the best, with the RS they somehow found space to make it even better. If you pride your car in having the ultimate in technolegy its for you. And if you plan on having it as a long term investment, you can rest assured as its already a classic.

I have driven both as well, for me the GT3 is kind of like a half track-half street car, compromising here and there to make the car feel a little more comfortable to drive everyday. The RS is the whole nine yards so to speak, roll-cages etc.
If it were me, I'd rather just buy a RS if I had a choice out of the two.

It really needs to be seen after the cars are available.
Regarding the 996 GT3 versions, the GT3RS is more fun and will probably be a real gem in future resale if you wait long enough. However, the GT3RS is not suitable for a daily driver or for long distances. I know some GT3RS owners and they say that the car is great. But this is something everyone has to find out for themselves.
For 997 it remains to be seen. I assume that they will make the GT3 more accessible as many people contemplated with that car in the past but did not take it due to missing PSM, aircon, navigation etc. Porsche will not miss this opportunity and take their money this time. However, the hardcore race fans will take the GT3RS as they probably have a choice of additional cars in their garage anyway. Therefore, Porsche will probably keep the GT3RS more hardcore.

I have a funny feeling that the 997 GT3RS would be "softer" too.
My rationale it that ROW has always had a hardcorer cored version of a 911.
Starting with GT3 MKI - wasn't available in North America
GT3MKII - was available in all markets BUT ROW received a harder core version in the GT3RS.
GT3MKIII If both the GT3 and GT3RS are available in all markets ROW will - once again - receive a harder core version in a GT3RSR.
IS that possible? RC any comments on that?

Thats because the price of all porsches in ROW are considerably higher (20% to 300 % price surplus minimum) than the US. Hence they need to give us something more for what we pay.
But on a more serious note, I think it has something to do with US laws in place i.e emissions, safety (Just a guess)
