Cayenne with V6, still a Porsche?

I was wondering if it was still a good P car worth buying or if it's just a P badge on an average SUV ?

Let's make it clear, I don't want to offence those who have one, I just want to get a fair answer. As far as I know, the engine comes from VW but has been mod to get more power out of it. The cayenne is also 2k more expensive than the touareg wich has an automatic tranny as standard.

I'm just wondering, that's all. Thanks for your answers. (even hough this question as probably been raised in the past but I'm too lazy to search for it)

Re: Cayenne with V6, still a Porsche?

The engine is the same as the touareg just different intake.
But as far as the whole car and how it rides, interior wise definitely Porsche... I even preferred that than the Touareg V8 to be honest:D

Re: Cayenne with V6, still a Porsche?

I guess no one really want to answer that one.

Re: Cayenne with V6, still a Porsche?

I have a v6 cayenne, and it's fine. Is it a 911s? Well, no... lol but it's a great ride, tracks like a laser and carves like a scalpel. If you drive it like u hate it it even goes "ok". Also has the nicest sound I've ever heard from a v6! PLUS, when you drive wisely, it gets 20+ mpg.

Re: Cayenne with V6, still a Porsche?

I have a V6 and love it. Had an X5 3.0i a few years ago and was considering an X5 3.0 d this time around but I test drove the Cayenne and there was no contest for me. The V6 makes a fantastic sound and plenty of power for 95% of real world driving. It isn't a dragster but it isn't a slouch either unless you have a full compliment of passengers on board which I never do. The rumoured hp increase on the next V6 will be welcome but I would buy another even if they didn't give it more power. The fact that it is much rarer on the roads than the X5 was also a big plus point to me.

Re: Cayenne with V6, still a Porsche?

I personally was disappointed that Porsche released the V6. Without wanting to offend, imo it tarnishes the reputation of the Porsche name. What next? Budget or compact sports cars?

On the other hand, having driven all 3 models extensively, I would have to agree that the v6 engine makes one hell of a nice purring noise - much moreso than my Turbo! What's that all about?

You mean the V6 makes a better noise than the turbo
    That's weird.

BTW, Thanks for all your answers guys

Re: Cayenne with V6, still a Porsche?

    Hi,

I've had my V6 for coming up to a year now and am always surprise with what it can pull out of the hat. I drove a TT for a few years before so was looking for something (much) larger without loosing the ability to feel what is going on.
After trying various X5's, Volvo and Touareg came to the conclusion that the Cayenne is the only decent ride. 19" PZero's and Air suspension help here. I commute with it daily with occassional motorway runs and always have more than enough pace. Only gripe would be the auto box when 4 or 5 up. Turning off PSM or using manual help tremendously.

One thing to be aware of in emea is if you opt for a version with PCM, the CD version cannot be upgraded to take TCM or postcode navigation which has disappointed me.

    Hope this helps!

A disadvantage of turbochargers is that they take some of the "edge" off an angine's exhaust sound.

    Is that so Fritz?

I distinctly remember, when driving the v6, the sound of the engine. It was the first thing which hit me. Having been used to the bigger engines - I was perplexed as to how and why!

Yep, I can confirm it, the V6 sounds sportier than the Turbo. BUT...you can change that easily with a sport exhaust and trust me, that V8 rumble/humble of the Turbo is pure sex when you get the right exhaust with it.

Re: Cayenne with V6, still a Porsche?

RC, which sport exhaust do you recommend for the Turbo?

    ...

Porsche has always had "budget" models. In the sixties it was the 912. In the seventies it was the 914/4, the 912E and the 924. The brand has never been tarnished.

Re: Cayenne with V6, still a Porsche?

I would buy a V6 no problem. To be honest how many people really need the power of a V8? To me I want a V8 everytime but is it required?

Re: Cayenne with V6, still a Porsche?

Nice discussion, again and again ...
I drive a V6 since summer last year, after a 996 C2 Cab facelift. It's not a race car, but as a family car, there is no need for absolut highspeed or tracdays. Ok, sometimes it's a little bit boring, but if I could run 300 km/h, there will be no place for it in daily traffic. And I don't go to the racetrac with a cayenne.

For me, there is no need to pay more than 12.000 EUR more only for a bigger engine.

At least, I won't cry if I had to drive an S or turbo.

Re: Cayenne with V6, still a Porsche?

Isn't the V6 going to get a mild power increase with the facelift? That might make things a little better for those that don't want to spend more or need the better gas mileage.

Which also could lead to the possibility that the exhaust of the V6 can also be modded to sound even better too.
A Naturally Aspirated motor almost always sounds better IMO.
