997 Turbo faster than Carrera GT???

Just got this new rumor in: at the Weissach test track, the 997 Turbo seems to be over one second faster than the Carrera GT. Of course the test track in Weissach is not comparable with the Nordschleife or Hockenheim but I think this is still pretty impressive if true.

Re: 997 Turbo faster than Carrera GT???

That makes no sense at all. No matter the amount of rear end grip the turbo benefits from...
Turbo = Pig w/far less HP
If true... I'd be slightly pissed if I were the owner of the CGT.

    Well...production ends April this year.
And Weissach is a pretty short non-highspeed track.

997TT could be one of the reasons too that they shortened the production of the CGT.

Well, I'm an owner of a Carrera GT as well as a 996TT.

It doesn't surprise me very much. The same thing would probably happen at an autocross course because of the TT's incredible hole-shot traction with AWD and the over-hung rear engine mass.

Tight, low speed courses are very different from open roads or road-racing tracks in traction demands.

The CGT is hampered somewhat from so much power on only two tires. The TT has monster traction and can put down all of its power any time it needs to do so. The CGT driver must be more careful, or lots of tire smoke and excessive rear slip angle are the result.

BTW, I'm not upset by this development.

P.S. I've been around Weissach for a few laps with Peter Falk and I can attest that it is pretty tight compared to most tracks.

Re: 997 Turbo faster than Carrera GT???

yup, the weissach track is very short and twisty
not a high-speed track by any stretch of the imagination
torque and AWD probably favor the 997 TT over teh mighty Carrera GT in this situation
will be interesting to see the difference @ the 'ring

    Mike,

I certainly didn't mean to diminish the excellence of your CGT-BTW, how would you compare the CGT to the 996GT2-any interest per chance in the 997GT2 when it comes?

Re: 997 Turbo faster than Carrera GT???

They want to sell more 997 TTs!

Re: 997 Turbo faster than Carrera GT???

    AL,

"IF" the 997 turbo is 90 lbs lighter than the 996 turbo, and the same hold true for the the 997 GT2.

this would mean a 90 lbs lighter GT2 540 hp/600 lbs (overboost) 530 lbs (normal), PDK ROCKET

    time to sell the TTS

If I'm tempted, I'm on my dealer's generic 997Turbo-du-jour list-which includes the GT2. Any hint on release date anyone?

In Weissach an AWD car has giant advantages, this could be. It is a very short track.

    Nope, that's the Battleship.

Re: 997 Turbo faster than Carrera GT???

Weissach might be very twisty which goes to the advantage of a 4wd car like the 997tt, but still I think it's extremely impressive if a lap takes 1 sec less than the CGT.
Just check the downloadable round of the CGT on Weissach on the Porsche website, it looks scaringly quick!!

Bah, look at RC's passenger video. "Supa!"

Re: 997 Turbo faster than Carrera GT???

I heard the rumor that the TT will be faster 0 to 62, but not to 100... again because of rear-wheel vs AWD...

Re: 997 Turbo faster than Carrera GT???

    hi everyone! first post
If that's true it's really impressive. It won't be faster than the CGT on the Nurburgring but when I look at the lap time of the 996 GT3 RS,the 997 GT3 could beat the CGT and not to mention the 997 GT2.But I was thinking that maybe Porsche would make the 997 GT3/GT2 slower to avoid that.

This is hilarious! All the pre-introduction rumors to ramp up sales. Pretty soon we will get a tidbit on how the 997TT out ran the Mcclaren, CGT and Zonda for the first 100 yards.

Keep it coming. This ugly peice of machinery with all it its gratuitous add on's i.e. whale tail (have to keep the ricer happy), side fish gills (must distinguish the car from the base 997), front fog/frog lights (can't let the Cayman out do it), and levered rear end panels (must distinguish the 997TT from the 993 TT all make for a Rube Goldburg unsightly mess.

Also, we are now told that the 997TT will beat the CGT in the twisties and short accceleration. Tell me, when driving public roads what is left? Sad, they got their money for the CGT and left their best customers holding the bag. Classic Porsche.

    Nick,
That was a very classy thing to say, and one of the reasons that rennteam stays so informative and lighthearted, good job keeping the board civilized, they arent all like that!!!;)

Dont worry about it Nick , myself cannot see the big deal here because as time goes on things will improve , even at a less of a cost occasionally..

Very classy move, Nick. But regarding your previous post, how did Porsche con its CGT buyers by possibly making the 997TT the better performer of the two? The CGT still costs three times as much and that's what matters to Ferrari enthusiasts
