March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

Just got my digital version of the March edition of Car and Driver and they rate the AM V8 better than the 997S basically because there will be 3,000 versus 30,000 997s and the fact they say it is exotic while the 997S is just 'familar'...

The 997S just blows the AM V8 away from their performance tests.

Interesting criteria. Car & Driver ought to really love the Panoz Esperante then, even slower than AMV8, $121K base and fewer than 200 sold during the past nine years --- Super Duper exclusive!

Englishman are those 1/4 mile times reversed?

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

    oops yes you are right.

    12.8 to the 997S.

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

good, I was hoping it didn't take the 997S 2.9 seconds to go from
    100mph to 105mph!

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

Hey don't sweat it. The 997 can't be loved by everyone. I guess the power is in the numbers. I still like my 997 no matter what any reviewer says

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

anybody have #s from any other magazines or reviews, just for comparison?

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

Those guys are fascinated and impressed by cars like the Dodge Magnum and the Ford Escort. I couldn't care less about anything they say. If I were a fourteen year old kid fantasizing about my first car, then I'd read their magazine.

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

Seems like the 997 is the real driver's car in this comparison. The Aston is a great car and very stunning, but loses out in acceleration, handling, and driving enjoyment I'm sure.

What was the price of the Aston compared to the 997S?

That's probably how old I was when I was reading it.

$110k base and $118k as tested! Not cheap!

Thanks. That makes the 997 seem like a bargain.

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

EnglishMan, Do you have a link to the electronic version? Or can you post it as an attachment? I'd love to read the article as I haven't received my paper based subscription yet. Thanks!

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

There is an episode of Top Gear that pits the 997S against the M6 and the new AM V8 Vantage (Its a British show!). The 997S spanks both of the other cars in performance tests. I watched the episode online, but I cannot find the link. I may have seen it on 6speedonline.com

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

I read a comparo between the 997s and the AM V8 (don't remember where). The article ended with this killer line that sums it up perfectly...

"If u want people to love you buy the Aston, but if you want people to hate you then buy the Porsche."

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

On Top Gear the 997S did spank both the AMV8 and M6 over a short section of the Isle of Man TT course. In fact the AMV8 and the M6 set pretty much the same time and the 997S was approx. 8 secs faster - and the section was only about 1m 30s! Though the 997S they used did have PCCB and -20mm S/S with LSD (i know you US guys hate the fact you don't get that option)

The irony is that even though the AMV8 is a UK built car, it's more expensive here than in the US! On an exchange rate of Pounds1:$1.7 the base price of an AMV8 in the UK is $136k USD (Pounds80k GBP) vs. a 997S which is equivalent of $110k USD (Pounds65k GBP).

The difference is even marked when you consider the performance figures - seems to me that AMV8 performance is closer to a 997 (non-S) and one of those in the UK is $98k USD (Pounds58k GBP).

If performance is what you want (for the price) then Porsche isn't what you want. The Z06 will blow it out of the water for a lot less money.

I can't figure some of you out... some of you use the exclusivity card or the performance card based on whichever Porsche will win out on. If you would demand more of Porsche they would be forced to acknowledge their customer base.

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

The Aston certainly is beautifully styled, and appointed inside. It's a work of art. I'm disappointed in those performance figures. Sure, I know that a car doesn't live or die by those numbers, and that for pure numbers, we oughta all go buy Z06's.....but......13.6 @ 105??? for how much dough??? With how much SUPPOSED horsepower?? Those acceleration numbers don't add up to me. My 300 h.p. 1993 Corvette ran 13.4 @ 107 at Gainesville raceway, bone stock, 1,700 miles, soon after I bought it new. There's been a performance and horsepower renaissance since then, hasn't there??

I know, magazine racing. I'm just pointing out that the numbers there are either non-representative, or if they are accurate, the Aston is a stone plug for the money....

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

Thanks, but I was looking for the 997S / AM V8 article as opposed to the 997 Turbo preview. Coochas, I went to your site and couldn't find it. Anyone, else?

    Wait for the supercharged AMV8

Should follow about a year after the launch of the AMV8 Volante. That should have 430 performance figues and the price to match.

The key is the Aston Martin should't be bothering to see something as mass market as Porsche as a competitor, nor should the magazines if they have any sense. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati and Zonda is where it should be focused.

Re: Wait for the supercharged AMV8

I love my 997S but I can understand where they are coming from. If the Aston is only 10K more and its more exclusive + gorgeous (unlike the Panoz), but slightly less of a performer (which in 95% of day to day driving will be overcome by the positives of driving the Aston), then it's fair for them to prefer the Aston.

For me, I've wanted a 911 since I was a kid. So buying an Aston doesn't mean the same thing.

Re: Wait for the supercharged AMV8

My friend just ordered his Vantage. I went with him to order it and I have to tell you it is a beautiful car. The lines will make to Vanquish look outdated. It has more useable trunk space. My friend likes power, but wanted something he does not see everyday and thats what he got. I am glad he is getting this as I will drive it to check it out. I prefer the Porsche for now, but who knows.

Re: Wait for the supercharged AMV8

I started thinking about buying a sports car when I saw some articles on the Vantage a few months ago. I saw the car in person and thought it was beautiful. It was at that point that I decided I should look at a Porsche before I ordered the Vantage. After a few trips to the Porsche dealer and thinking it over my conclusion was that the Porsche was better in almost all catagories except that the Vantage is nicer looking and they will not be all over the neighborhood, as are Porsche's. Those considerations were less important to me, so I am now awaiting delivery of a C4S. BTW, the Vantage has no back seat and two fewer airbags. I did think the airbags on the Porsche were important.

Well, if those are their criteria they should at least sell a magazine to Nick Berry.

I look forward to him reposting that quote in about 4 - 5 weeks when he catches up with it.

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

My new 997s is in the shop now.
just received its first baby photos (its so cute!)

this is one of the shots they sent me. it doesn't contribute much to discussion but is a suitable photo given the topic.

Yes the Z06 would blow my 997S away, especially given the price. But I like a safety margin which I think the 997S or even the 997TT gives you with their electronics and great engineering. And to be honest I don't think I have the skill to really drive a Z06 well and given the condition of the roads here in the NYC area no where to play with it.

Keep in mine I just had my first child which changed my perspective some what...

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

Surprising how much wider the AM looks compared to the 997..

Re: March Car and Driver has AM V8 beat the 997S..

that may just be the photo as the AM is closer and in the silver (black makes things look smaller)

not sure of the dimensional difference.

You are right on. This comparison is totally senseless. Everyone knows that there are more 997 on any street anywhere than the Aston V8. They picked the car that is more rare (or exotic if you prefer this term) on the street as the winner, but yet it lost all the objective comparison tests.
And they forgot to ask the most important question: why is the Aston V8 more rare? It is not because it costs so much money that people cannot afford it. It is because at its price range, every car buyers who have any car sense will buy the 997 instead.

Re: Wait for the supercharged AMV8

Looks like they should of compared it to the Normal 997, maybe it would of been more fair in the numbers to the AMV8. Oh, but that would of made it wayyyyyy more expensive. Wow, Porsche is a bargain too!!
