    Cayenne S

Looking between 2004 Cayenne S vs 2004 Touareg.
Why such a big price difference for a similar car?

Cayenne S with Nav and all the same options will come out to be 64K where the Touareg I drove today is only at 49K.

Test drove both, I like the speed of Porsche (and the name) but I don't see a 15K price difference.

    Re: Cayenne S

Buy the toerag then. Having said that don't forget that the cost of a car is not what you pay for it, it is the difference between wht you buy it for and what you sell it for. You may find that total ownership costs on the cayenne are not that much more than the toe-rag. But final call is if you can't see or justify the difference then the extra money on the cayenne is wasted on you; buy the toe-rag.

    Re: Cayenne S

    I got it....

I had just purchased a V8 Touareg with Nav, Xenon, Convience Pkg, Winter Package for $47K Out of the door.

I went to the porsche dealer in Plano and they are not willing to come down on the price at all.

Such a big price difference... just for a "porsche" badge.

Car looks great, looks better than the cayenne... Interior finish is SUPER.....

For anyone else out there, test drive both and compare prices before purchase one.... I did and i'm glad!

    Re: Cayenne S

Congrat's (or Farfenugen )...if you couldn't tell the difference in the high performance engineering and customer service of Porsche, there is no sense in paying for it. Why go to Harvard when you can get a degree at your community college? AK

    Re: Cayenne S

    ooooo harsh.... I like it

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone !

    Re: Cayenne S

Your right ...I didn't mean to sound so angry!!! It is the holidays for pete's-sake, a good time to be grateful to own any new car....Cheers

    Re: Cayenne S

That is a very funny photo AK. I'm printing it out and taking it to Thanksgiving dinner today.

    Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

ps: you don't have a higher rez of that do you?

    Re: Cayenne S

how about the brakes ? didnt you feel the difference?.How about the aggressive nature of the handling in turns .The very low center of gravity in high performance turning? There is a funfactor catagory.Maybe you owe it to yourself to go for a 2nd test drive. Before you shell out the greenbacks for a v- dub.

I have to agree that the Touareg somehow looks better than the Cayenne. Interior quality is the same (would be funny if it'd be different, it is the same supplier ).
There is however a huge difference regarding the engine setup, the auto tranny setup and suspension setup. It isn't actually possible to compare both cars. I drove the Touareg V8 and the V10 Diesel and I have to say the the V8 was somehow boring compared to the V10 Diesel which seems to have endless power and especially torque. The Cayenne S is a different story again, engine feels (and is) more powerful (there is a 1 second performance difference from 0-100 kph between the Touareg V8 and Cayenne S, from 0-160 kph or 100 mph, the difference is almost 3 seconds), not to speak about the sportier suspension setup and the more direct steering on the Cayenne S. If you owned a Porsche car (not Cayenne) before, you might understand what I'm talking about. And yes, finally you're also paying for the brand name Porsche but I don't find anything wrong with that. I'd say that 5000 bucks are for the brand name (I can live with that ) and 10000 bucks for the setup difference.

I'd also like to throw in a little comment on the looks of the Cayenne S (no offense taken!): today we saw a Cayenne S and a Cayenne Turbo sitting one next to each other. My wife doesn't like how the Cayenne looks from the front, she thinks it looks like a "raised" 911. When she saw the Turbo next to the S, she immediately asked me what car the Turbo is because it looks different. I never actually saw both one next to each other but my wife is right (as always ), there is a huge difference if you look at the front of both cars at the same time. The Turbo looks much more SUV-like than the S, it is highly interesting. Because of the bigger air inlets and the power domes on the front hood, the Turbo appears to look bigger from the front than the more subtle Cayenne S.
I really recommend having a look at both Cayenne from the front, it is really stunning what kind of difference it makes, especially if the color is a light one (not black or blue).

But to get back to the Touareg V8: you bought yourself a fine SUV, no doubt about it. But don't say I didn't tell you, you'll regret it in a few months that you didn't buy a Cayenne S. Why? Because Porsche cars have soul (no kidding!), they are special and a Volkswagen always stays a Volkswagen, as arrogant as this might sound. When I sold my 996 Turbo 7 months ago, I wanted to get myself a Cayenne Turbo for the family. My Porsche dealer didn't want to make me a good offer (apparently the Cayenne Turbo was selling good by that time) and I bought a Mercedes E55 AMG instead because I thought I get the same performance as on a 996 Turbo and be able to move the whole family too with it. What a mistake. The E55 was fun, it was powerful and it looked great but I never fell in love with that car. Drive feel was Mercedes-like, even if much sportier, the steering was still a bit numb and I couldn't feel attached to that car. Or to make it short: it was boring. I wish you well with your decision for the Touareg V8 but I'm afraid that if you really have petrol flowing through your veins, you'll get a Cayenne S sooner or later and loose a lot of money on the Touareg V8. Maybe you won't be as stupid as I was but I never make such a mistake again. I bite into the bitter apple and pay more money for a Porsche but I stay happy. Sounds weird, sounds dumb? Maybe. But I have to feel good in my cars, otherwise I would ride a bicycle.

RC, while I agree with you there is a certain "mystique" about Porsches, I think a lot of it has to do with the driver - there's a certain feeling about driving a Porsche that gives the driver some euphoria, I'm sure other marques such as Ferrari do the same thing (hey look what I'm driving! )

No doubt though, out of all the cars I've driven, Porsches feel so connected to the driver and the road. But some of that "soul" is all in the driver's head.

Didn't somebody already point that out, I don't know, maybe in a prvate message.

I think you're right, a Porsche gives the driver a certain "Euphoria" but what is wrong with that?
OK, that Cayenne V6 owner who jumped in to my dealership and talked about the "superior performance" of his Cayenne compared to other SUVs? Well, a VW Golf Diesel GTD with 150 HP is faster I told him but he was shocked I even mentioned it. Yes, Porsche cars have that certain "je ne sais quoi" but in the case of the Cayenne Turbo, I think also has something to do with reality. 0-125 mph (200 kph) in 20.8 seconds, over 1 second faster(!) than a Porsche 993 C2! 1 min 20,6 seconds on the Hockenheim Ring (Kleiner Kurs), same time as a Mercedes C32 AMG! 8 minutes 41 seconds on the Nuerburgring Nordschleife, 8 seconds faster(!) than an Audi TT 1.8 Turbo quattro (225 HP) and same time as the Audi S3. Now it might be in my head but it is pretty much "justified" by reality too.
Forgot to tell you: we're talking about a 2.5 ton truck.
