    AMG continiues hp war?

AFFALTERBACH, Germany - Of late, AMG has concentrated on artificially aspirated engines, namely supercharged V8s and turbocharged V12s. But that's all about to change when Mercedes-Benz's performance division unveils its new V8 at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

Dubbed the ML156, the new normally aspirated 6.3-liter V8 will make its Frankfurt debut in the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG. The engine delivers 510 hp at 6,800 rpm and 465 pound-feet of torque at 5,200 rpm. AMG officials told Inside Line the large displacement allows 20-percent more torque than its chief competitors, while at the same time being lighter, more fuel-efficient and more drivable.

After it debuts in the ML63 AMG, the engine will go into the CLK63 AMG and E63 AMG, likely to be unveiled at next spring's Geneva show. In late 2006, the engine will make its way into the R63 AMG, and in early 2007, it will go into the C63 AMG and SLK63 AMG.

The ML156 engine won't be fitted into the AMG versions of the new S-Class - premiering at the Frankfurt show - the CL or SL until at least 2008. Those vehicles will feature more powerful versions of their current engines.

While this new engine is normally aspirated, AMG officials said the division will remain faithful to turbocharging where it makes sense.

Imagine 510 hp and 465 ft trq in C, SLK Or CLK! now thats gonna be awesome....

Ps. CL, SL, S, will get same version of V8 with twin turbo around 600hp!

So now lower car class is getting 510 hp.... like C63 and SLK63.... Do you think they did that to [censored] off BMW guys lol They like or so you have 507 hp in your M5, fine how about 510 in our C class... haha..... i find it funny!

    Re: AMG continues hp war?

With Audi, BMW, Mercedes (& AMG) forever upping the stakes in this game, where does this leave Porsche ?

    Boxster: 240bhp
    Boxster S: 280bhp
    Cayman S: 295 bhp
    997: 325 bhp
    997S: 355 bhp
    997S with X51: 381 bhp

These figures look dreadful. Although I am the first to say that Porsche cars handle so much better than other cars so they can make up for the hp deficiency around a track, in a straight line Porsches don't stand a chance. It will be TOTALLY depressing for a guy in a 997S getting overtaken by a housewife in a ML63 AMG taking the kids to school/going shopping.

Wake up Porsche AG please! We need more power and more torque!

well, you dont wanna compare porsche to a MB come on, Porsche is way more superior car, better build... i wont speak about handing and all that we all know the truth... power wise.... yeah they should've make 997 350 hp, 997s 400, GT3 450hp, and 997 turbo 500+ hp and 997 turbo s 550+ and GT2 if they will build one 600hp+

But seriously where are we headed with so much hp? Its getting ridicolous!

Let's just see how raising gas prices will influence people's choices.

But also dont forget as engines get more powerfull at the same time they make them more fuel efficient!

I was rather referring to the public view on those cars. Right now it is not a bad thing to drive through clogged up streets with those animals - SUVs I am referring to - but let's see how this develops. People go mad right now in Germany, there is no logic behind it but who says that people act logical..?

I remember about a decade ago you were left in contempt once you launch your car with screeching tires - currently noone really cares about it! Just a very personal view though...

    Re: AMG continues hp war?

Vladimir, I'm with you - of course one can't compare a MB with a P. One is a bloated sedan and the other is a throughbred sportscar BUT if we only look at straight line speed, the P car is left behind big time.

But surely P cars need more power. As a rule of thumb, an extra 50 hp for each model is about right.

To pick a random example, I bought my 328i which has 193hp. BMW replaces it with a 330i producing 231hp. Now the 330i (latest shape) produces 258hp. Where are they finding all this extra power? Why can't Porsche find it too?

    Re: AMG continues hp war?

Porsche can do it... but i dont understand why dont they.... Maybe their logic is that we compensate loss of Hp with our great handling?

But im sure sooner or later they gonna bump up the power... when SLK63 will overtake their 500 hp porsche turbo hehehe... Not !

I don't worry about those SUVs, they are still slower in a straight line and in the corners - but those CLK and SLK 63s must have awesome acceleration!

Again, I'd say that the hp war will come to an end, sooner or later. I could imagine that MB is trying to dig up the last cash from their customers before the next oil crisis!

since driving is not only about the car..more like driver and the car togather which is the handling.. i would still go for the P

    Re: AMG continues hp war?

So the top Mercedeses are making more power than Porsches.
What's new? Porsche was traditionally lower on power...
THIRTY years ago it was the same situation, the Mercedes 450SEL 5.9 had 285hp, while the top 911, the Carrera RS 3.0, had only 200.

A SLK (or CLK) with the 63 engine (should it ever be produced) would probably require 14 to 15 seconds to reach 200 kph (a bit quicker than the E55 with nearly the same power). That would then be 2.5 seconds slower than in case of the 997TTS. So where is the problem

And here we are just talking about straight line performance, the only category in which AMG cars can be competitive after all.

The sad part would be when the soccer mom doesn't even think she's racing you (because she's busy yelling at the kids) and she's still kicking your ass as your trying to floor it in your 997 twin turbo S to keep up with her.
