Thinking about trading in my SL 55 for a 65

    Hi guys,

I was at a showroom yesterday and they had a SL65 on the floor. I just want some opinions before I go ahead and make a decision. I didn't like the 65 in the beginning, but after seeing it a couple times... it grew on me The problem is the price, they want $320,000(which is normal here, considering the %250 tax on exotics) for it. Which seems way too much for a Mercedes IMO, I could rather spend a little more and get a 2nd hand 360 spider or spend much less and get a 2nd hand 360 Modena. What do you think I should do? btw my sl is obsidian black and so is that 65(there are only 2 black 65's in SA) on the floor

    any opinions appreciated. thanks

btw i can get $180,000 for my 55 if i trade it in, so i still owe another $140,000

Wow, and I thought 9.2% tax was high where I live!

IMO, I'd go for the 360 Spider

i like the 360 spider too, but i drove one last year and felt it was a bit lacking in power

you're not going to get a car with more hp or torque than this in SA seeing that we can't get the CGT or Enzo here due to the stupid no-LHD cars law they implemented a couple years ago...

Pardon my ignorance but: Do you have a speed limit in SA?

If so, the difference between SL55 and SL65 should be negligible. Below 200kph the performance of both cars is basically the same...

yes there is a speed limit *wink* and i'm a "law-abiding" citizen

there is quite a considerable difference IMO, when i test drove the 65 it feels A LOT more powerful.

go for the 65!! Because I've seen a SL65 easily defeated a 360 in real... and 360 took off first... but at that moment, Ferrari felt so weak and helpless... and the exhaust sound of SL65 alone would blow everything away!! That overtaking is simply effortless and you know you have nothin to do at that moment..... I was so impressed!!

I d stay put with the 55, since the new 6,3l amg engine will be used in all the merc models and then u ll be stuck with an 'old' engine... I d keep the 140000 and wait for something better... I m not the kind of guy that would pay a difference to buy the same car (model/colour) just because it is a bit quicker...

Honestly Mike, I think you should think about moving from South Africa and come to states so you can have many nice cars in your arsenals .

If you can affort the depreciation go for the 65. I've read comparisons between the Lambo Murci and the Pagani Zonda and it won 9 out of 10 times upto 150 mph...It's the perfect understatement, straightline,two-in-one, everyday supercar ! If you go for pure looks or sound - buy the Ferrari but not for it's performance...

Re: Thinking about trading in my SL 55 for a 65

How bad is trac of 65 vs 55? Heard some mention that sudden jab of 65's accelerator in even dry conditions can overwhelm trac ctrl....given 65 is fundamentally an absent-minded, straight-line commuter car for many, GT2-like surprises could dismay many.....Also, may want to consider exhaust note of 65 vs 55...mixed reviews on 65. And, in US, Merc shipped many 65s w/the IMO ugly non-black wood interior, w/o optional Nappa black leather, etc.....Merc was absurdly trying to sell base 65s to a jaded audience that full well knows (and doesn't really care that) car essentially depreciates $60Kish upon driving it out of dealer...but wants a 65 w/all the options and upgraded interior trim....not a base version.....

yes the depreciation is my main concern, as my 55 has dropped like i couldn't believe in just 1 year!!!!! i thought they are limiting the production of the 65, or is that just a rumour i heard somewhere?

regarding the exhaust note, is it just me or does the 55's sound louder...

The overtaking performance of the SL65 from 20+ mph is simply incredible. You will notice the difference in acceleration vs sl55 immediately, even at legal speeds. However might be better to buy it used since they are depreciating so quickly. They are selling for well below MSRP here in USA so you may be able to get a great discount from your dealer if you want to buy it new.

honestly, even if money was no issue at all, i wouldn't.

of course it's always nice to have the "top of the range" product, not to speak about the desirability of a twin turbo V12 engine... but IMO the SL 65 has more power than it can get to the ground. a friend of mine test drove it half a year ago, there was nearly no normal driving situation where the ESP didn't interfere somehow. and car was feeling quite heavy on the front end (what a surprise )

SL 55 is just enough, IMO the SL 65 is just showing off. but kind of senseless showing off.
