The BOSE system on the 996 is much better than anything Porsche had to offer in the past. However, if you're a 100% audiophile, you might not like it.
I have the PHPAS (Porsche High Performance Audio System) on my 996 Turbo and compared to the BOSE system, it seems to sound better (fuller?) with a better bass. And now the funny thing: a friend who is a real HIFI Freak didn't like the PHPAS on my car at all. My conclusion: if you had an aftermarket high performance HIFI system on your 993, you might not be fully satisfied with the BOSE system.
May I suggest you listen to a BOSE installed on a dealer's car?
All newer 996 Turbos have the BOSE installed and I'm sure that your dealer has one or at least he finds a customer who recently bought one.
But if you're willing to invest a couple of thousands of $, I bet an aftermarket system might be the better choice. You should be VERY careful who does the install because there are a lot of things which could go wrong.

Thanks RC. I really like the system on my car but the new car is actually for my dad and he is not quite as into audio as I am. Also I have been having a few problems recently with the aftermarket system, it keeps causing the alarm to go off as the car thinks the radio has been stolen:(, that make me hesitant to get another aftermarket system if the bose sounds good. Also for the 03 cab my dealer said that there will only be around 110 x51s for the entire US and that they are only available on coupes. Do you know if Porsche is ever going to release the x51 for any car other than a coupe? And also do you know if it would be possible to retrofit the x51 as a dealer installed option? I would prefer to get the factory powerkit rather than an aftermarket especially since I dont plan on racing the car.

I have no idea why its not available for cabs here in the US. At first our dealer thought that it might be because of our environmental laws but since theres going to be some of them they will still have to be tested. 
I guess if its not available here I'll just have to come to Germany and get one.

Is PHPAS also called Porsche Pack Audio option code M490, because this is what I have and it is good enough, especially with a cabriolet!
It comes with 10 speakers, 4 on the front (2 on each side), 4 for the bass located on the doors and 2 at the back.
The other option is called in France DSP (digital sound processing) option code M680, and is much more expensive, I suppose it is the Bose one.
Then there's another one, maybe yours Christian, which Alexander Duwendahl showed me at the exclusive department, but I think it is a special order for audiophile, is was a Carrera equiped with huge speakers onthe doors, the sound was just ridiculous!!!
So, just wanted to confirm

The DSP is from Bose
Just checked on the british website, the DSP is called Bose sound system so it is the one, and the PHPAS is by far the most expensive of the three sound package option, and judging by the picture they show on the tequipment website, it is the monster system that I saw in Zuffenhausen, the bass speaker is almost as big as the door!!!
So tell me Christian, is it really a killer, doesn't the bass speaker vibrate too much when you play house music really loud, it does in mine sometimes, they changed it, which is really nice but it still does it a little bit, only when it's loud though.
So in fine, I just have the basic sound system after the stock one

PHPAS is great but ...
... NEVER store ANYTHING in the door boxes because it will surely vibrate and cause distortion, especially when you hear music with a lot of bass (like House Music, Techno, etc.).
PHPAS works best (sound-wise) with the Becker units but also delivers an acceptable good sound with the PCM system.
The only reason why I ordered PHPAS on my Turbo was the fact, that I didn't want to have the hassle to install an aftermarket system.

Goodwood has your dealer sent in the requet to the factory yet? I went to the dealer and we sat down and wrote down all the options and ordered the car, however around a week later when the order had been recieved by the factory the dealer called and said that it was not possible. I hope that your order goes through
