First Mercedes SLR testdrive and more details!

One of our valued Users asked me to post this info for him.
Because of certain circumstances, he wants to stay anonymous but I can assure you that this SLR report in NO fake.

    Here we go:

    Mercedes-Benz SLR Mclaren

    612 PS ( recertified with 626 PS )
    780 Nm

    Compression ratio: 8.8

    5.5 Liters

Boot volume 275 Liters,( compartment inside car 40 Liters )

    Performance.

    0-100: 3.8s
    0-200: 10.1s
    0-300: 31.1s

    Top speed: 330-340km/h

    Cd value: 0.38

    Weight of car: 1768kg*

1.* (Weight according to EC reg.
    90% fuel,7kg equipment and driver 68kg)

    Drivers report:
Two SLR,one black and one silver both completely unmasked.

First the Handling Pad: We started of by driving the SL500,SL55
and then on to the SLR for comparisons sake.
The difference between the SL500 and the SL55 to the SLR is like comparing a GT3 to an S500 if you consider the steering feel and balance.

Handling Track: A taxi ride with one of the Test drivers from Mclaren. AMAZING!

High Speed Oval: We got to drive all the cars for two laps with a speed of 200km/h on the banks and 250km/h on the straights.

Next a taxi ride in the SLR at full speed!! 330km/h on the straights.
The car seemed very stable and composed.

    To sum it up:
The car accelerates violently of the line and then just keeps on going to the max accompanied by a thunderous exhaust/engine roar inside the cabin.
Brake pedal feel: artificial and very difficult to moderate.
Steering feel: very precise but too nervous at high speeds.
Overall design of the car is excellent for a "GT",but it can`t match the Carrera GT for visual drama.
That said ,it doesn`t have the looks of a real "Supercar" and with the new mini SLR (SLK) coming soon and the facelifted SL later with a similar front end as the SLR I think
there is a real chance the SLR won`t be seen as anything more than just a normal Mercedes to the average person on the street.
Worst design faults on the car has to be the standard 18 inch rims and the steering wheel, same one as in the SL55. "MAJOR DISSAPOINTMENT"
Noise level inside the car at acceleration and at high speeds can be wearing.
Exhaust sound outside the car sounds like an SL55,only more nervous and much louder.
    Excellent grip and balance.

Engine: Monstrous engine with excellent torque.
Steering: Extremely direct,a bit nervous at high speeds.
Brakes: Artificial feel, difficult to moderate otherwise excellent performance.
    Balance: Excellent grip and balance.
Looks: Overall impression, best looking GT but lacks the visual drama of the Carrera GT and other Supercars.Don`t get me wrong, "It looks Awesome".

THE CARS WE DROVE WERE NOT PRODUCTION CARS,THEY STILL HAVE SOME DEVELOPMENT TO DO
    BEFORE DELIVERIES START.

The first cars will be delivered in the end of March or end of April 2004.

Price has not been revealed yet but is expected to be in the region of Euro 350.000 excl.VAT

SORRY! NO CAMERAS WERE ALLOWED AT THE IDIADA FACILITY.

Re: First Mercedes SLR testdrive and more details!

A bit of a disappointment, an SL55 with MKB tuning to 558PS will do the 0-300km/hr run in only 26 seconds. The thing weighs more than a CLK500, it no supercar, in fact a waste of carbon fibre. Its not even near the performance of the Enzo. I loved this car, but the performance and stats are useless.

If the figures are real, I think the AMG Owner's Club owes me an apology.
Not that I really expect one...

Re: First Mercedes SLR testdrive and more details!

Well I can see why you are right RC, but just remember the SL is very aerodynamic, more so than the SLR, a lot more. I think the air brake is a waste of time, I mean come on, its a car not a freaking Mig-29 slowing down from 250mph!If the SLR had the same cd value as the SL, things would have been different, but no.

I still am sitting firmly on the fence over this Nardo controversy and this MKB claim, we just need someone with an SL55 with the 186mph limiter and the balls to videotape the beast doing the 0-300km/hr while steering with his left hand and videotaping with the other, hmmm, where can we find such a brave soul?? Know anybody RC?

    Regarding the Nardo controversy:
my E55 usually (right now something seems to be wrong ) does 0-300 kph in 47 seconds.
Now let's suppose that the SL55 AMG, despite it's higher weight, does 0-300 kph slighly faster (maybe due to the shorter overall gear ratio)...around 45 or even 40 seconds (which is quite unbelievable).
There is still a difference compared to the SL55 tested in Nardo, don't you think so? And how come that the SLR with 200 kg less, more power (626 HP) and especially much more torque (780 Nm vs. 700 Nm on the SL55) seems to have almost the same 0-300 kph acceleration time?

I don't want to restart the same controversial discussion again but I've been kicked out of the AMG Owner's Club because I said the truth and most members don't seem really to care about it.
People who know me know that I'm a "justice seeker" and I always put honor and honesty on my priority list. Apparently some other people have problems with that.

Re: First Mercedes SLR testdrive and more details!

I`ve owned both the GT2 and the SL55 (delimited) at the same time and made comparison tests between them on the autobahn.
We started at 200km/h and accelerated to 300km/h.
    Result:The GT2 was considerably faster.
No way those figures from Nardo can be correct.
If I remember correctly the time of the GT2 was 40.5sec.
    If a E55 does 47sec I guess an SL55 could do 44-47sec.
The drag coefficient of the SL55 is 0.29 compared to 0.38 for the SLR which makes a huge difference at high speeds.
    Sport Auto magazine tested a RS-Tuning GT2 with 542PS
which posted a time of 28.5sec from 0-300km/h and a lap time of 1min 10.5sec on a slightly damp Hockenheim circuit.
The car had a different suspension kit as well (Uwe Alzen Motorsport)and Yokohama Advan 048 tires.
Should be interesting to know how fast the Carrera GT is.
The Cd value of the Carrera GT is 0.39.
The goal of the SLR and the Carrera GT is to produce a lot of downforce not straight line performance.

Thanks for the link, very nice pictures.
I think black is definetely one of the best colors for the SLR.

no one with any knowledge about physics and cars could really believe the AMS nardo test results. it's really a shame they nevery analyzed it honestly. but really pushed SL55 sales i believe. so merc did a good (marketing) job, AMS staffwriters didn't.

btw, to whom it may concern:

thanks for your SLR report! very intersting and somehow what i've expected. as fanch stated some time ago: "poor gordon murray."
