    7-speed automatic transmission

    The new 7-speed automatic transmission is rumored to make it's debut in several AMG models, including the CL 55, SL 55 and E 55.
    Introduction is rumored to be around autumn this year.
    Advantage of the 7-speed automatic transmission: shorter shifting times resulting in better acceleration performance and less fuel consumption.

    Do you know if this transmission will later be equiped with an F1 setup? Or something similar to Audi's double clutch?

    No, I don't have such information.
    The only thing I know is that the 7-speed automatic is good for around 700 Nm torque (a later version for around 1200 Nm which makes it possible to remove the electronic torque limit on the CL 65 AMG) and that the AMG version should deliver around 10-15% faster shifting times compared to the Speedshift transmission. The best part: the new 7-speed tranny adds only 1.5 kg of weight.

    7-speed transmission can make gear change much smoother than ordinary 5 speed espeically during upshift.

    I don't see any reason for Mercedes to implement a DSG or SMG type of transmission before they produce the first sport car. If Mercedes ever going to choose one, the DSG should be the way to go.

    Unfortunately the latest rumor indicates that there won't be a 7-speed auto tranny on the AMG models for MY 2004.

    First cars to be equipped with the 7-speed auto tranny will be the Mercedes models E 500, S 430 and S 500, CL 500 and SL 500. Start is autumn 2003, means: MY 2004 cars get the 7-speed automatic transmission. The official name of the new 7-speed automatic tranny is 7G-Tronic (7-speed Tronic).

    It is still possible that the 7G-Tronic makes it to various AMG models later on but probably not for MY 2004.

    Possible but not very likely too soon. The 7-speed auto tranny is a good marketing highlight, something Mercedes surely doesn't want to pass to their competitor too soon.
